Suppose you're the PM for Facebook Stories and your teammate says we should increase the height of the stories bar in the app. How would you think through this decision?

Firstly, I would like to clarify what the feature and what's it's purpose is. Also, assuming that we are referring to the app experience and not the site/mobile web experience.

Stories: When a user opens the Facebook app, the stories feature is at the very top. It's only below the status and above the regular feed. Clicking on a story will start autoplaying the photos/ video.

Users: The two main users are content creators and consumers. Let's approach this decision with consumers in mind as they are the largest user group and hence the most impactful.

Goal: Here, the proposed hypothesis is that increasing the height of the stories bar will increase engagement with this feature. I would want to a/b test this feature. But first, the goal is to validate/ think through this decision. Is this something that we should test?

  1. Looking through data to find insights  Firstly, let's see what the data says about the stories feature's usage. I want to uderstand the end to end funnel of this feature. The following is a list of metrics of interest.
    • Awareness: What % of users are aware of the stories feature
    • Aquisition: What % of users have interacted with stories, have posted a story.
    • Engagement: DAU/MAU
    • Retention: What % of stories users are repeat users
    • C-Statisfaction: C-sat with this feature.
  2. Assuming the data shows that:
    • Users are not aware of the feature and how to use it. The % adoption is lower than benchmark for a similar feature. In that case, increasing the height could help
  3. Protype it and get feedback. I will also build out a simple protoype/ mock wireframe and run it through user testing/ user feedback sessions.
  4. Launch an A/B test experiment. Control will see no change and treatment group will see the increased height of the stories feature. Start with low exposure and gradually increase it. This will help us conclusively determine if we should increase the height.
