This product is supposed to be accessed through Facebook App, like Marketplace or Watch, right?
Yes. Ideally, it should be inside a Face App like the others.
2) Goal
We are talking about Facebook, therefore this new product should be tied back to Facebook's mission, which is to bring people together all over the world. Having a product to help people planning trips is at the core of this mission, as they will be more connected with the platform through the same interests.
So, here's how I would like to approach this question:
- Talk about some user groups;
- Choose one group to focus and mention some of their pains;
- Based on that, we are going to brainstorm some solutions;
- Then, prioritize one or two solutions;
- Finally, define some success metrics;
How does that sound?
3) User groups
Business Trips
These are business trips, so executives and employees tend to travel for business. Generally, these trips are short and cost-effective.
Short trips
People going to places near their homes, no more than 3-5 hours driving. These trips are not so long, generally over the weekend, and repeated 2-4 times a year maybe.
Long trips
People going to places far away from their homes, generally taking a plane, long hours of flight. People travel this far 1-2 times a year at max.
I would like to focus on short trips, because it is not so affected by working schedule, and generally takes place on weekends. Moreover, places and towns as destinations of these trips are not so well-famous, meaning not so much information about them. I believe that these destinations are not well-served in terms of planning. Does it make sense?

5) Solutions
I am going to use my own experience when I travelled 2 hours to Salem, MA. My worst pain is related to not knowing so much information to actually have a nice experience. So, I am going to focus on it.
Design a new type of group for trips inside Facebook Groups, with more organization. Basically, you could enter in a group for Salem, click on Restaurants topics for instance, and read all available restaurants, what they serve, reviews, etc. Eventually, it could include Ads as well, driving extra revenue.
Create a new section inside the app called "Trips", where people could insert some data, such as date and destination of the trip. Then, a bunch of organized information would appear to them, being able to "add" to their plans. They would also be able to read reviews, know prices, and see photos. People could also see shared trip plans from other users. It would also leverage Ads.
6) Prioritization
I could come up with these two solutions, and I would prioritize the second one. The reason is that it's more focused on the long-term.
To go over details of how the process would look like:
- User go to a separate tab inside Facebook App;
- Input key information: departure date, local, duration of trip, goal (attractions, food, rest, etc)
- Based on the goal, the product would make suggestions. Let's assume the goal is to enjoy the food. So, the planner would suggest some restaurants to eat (breakfast, lunch, afternoon lunch, and dinner).
- The user would explore those options, reading reviews and calculations avg prices by adding those options in the plan.
- After this step, he would repeat the same for other key components (place to stay, attractions, etc) if any and interested.
- Then, he would finish the plan, having the option to share on his newsfeed, stories, etc and integrate on Calendar.
- His friends who had been in that place could see their newsfeed and interact with him specifically on that plan, for instance, a specific restaurant to talk about a meal.
7) Metrics of Success
To test the idea, I would first use a focused group, gathering as much feedback as I can. Then, I would do A/B testing with a larger base.
Regarding metrics of success, I would look into:
How many visits to the app were made;
How many plans were created;
How many plans were created and followed through;
What's the level of engagement in the App and Facebook as a whole;

1. What kind of group sizes do we want to tackle? Is there a specific range? Ans. No such range.
2. Are there any specific kinds of trips we are talking about? I am assuming we are talking about holiday trips and not related to work or education? Ans. Yes we are talking about vacation trips.
3. I am assuming this is a new product with which we are entering market and our primary goal is to increase adoption. Is there something else that we are targeting like revenue/monetization?
Ans. No. You can assume product adoption as the primary goal.

Now that we have some context of the problem, I'll summarize how I'd like to go about designing the product.
First, I'll think of the different kinds of users who would like to use this product, then choose one or more amongst them based on where the impact can be the most.
Secondly, I'll think of their needs and pain-points.
Thirdly, I'll think of solutions that address those needs and prioritize one or more amongst them based on our goal and the effort involved.
Lastly, we can talk about some metrics that can help measure the success of our solution.

U1: Wants to plan a trip with friends/family members (people known beforehand)
U2: Wants to find and reach out to like-minded strangers and plan a trip with them
I will target U1 as it's a much larger segment as compared to U2.
-- Pain-points of U1 --
1. Communication is difficult in a group of people, since there are lots of people involved & everyone is not reachable everytime. Presently, people rely on creating groups on whatsapp/telegram kind of apps and interact there. Not the most efficient.
2. It's hard to keep a track of different constraints & preferences of different people and thus to reach a quorum. Presently, people rely on their own memory/observation to track what each person in the group likes and reaches a quorum through discussion. This can lead to extremely lengthy discussions and can act as a buzzkill.
3. It's hard to create an end-to-end plan and picturize it; too many details related to conveyance, dates, accomodation, places to visit, tracking expenditures, etc. Presently, people rely on different websites to plan each of these different aspects and then join the dots themselves. This is too much of a cognitive load.
-- Possible solutions to address the pain points --
To address the above pain points, we can design app that -
1. Allows for formation of groups based on invite to phone numbers.
2. We can add our own likings/interests of what things we'd like to do on a trip, and add budget constraints too.
3. There are sub-groups where different aspects of the trips are being discussed. For eg. Flight booking, Accomodation, Places to visit can each have a different group.
4. The app would help search from within each sub-group the related aspect being discussed there. For eg. In "Places to visit" sub-group, users can input a destination and the app will come back with recommended places to visit based on the interests of the group members and everyone can vote for what they would like to visit.
5. The app will collect information from each of the sub-groups and create a story-board/picture of decisions made till now, what is yet to be decided, who are we waiting on to respond, what would be the expected trip expenditure, what the trip schedule looks like and so on.
-- MVP (Prioritization) --
To start with a simple product to enter market, points 1, 3, and 5 are the most essential because separating each aspect of the trip, picturization and coming to a quorum are the biggest pain points of planning a group trip.
Points 2 & 4 are good add-ons where we can recommend from within the sub-group itself what to book/visit based on what user searches for or likes. These can be covered as we learn more from our users.

1. Monthly Active Users
2. Number of trips planned end-to-end and executed
3. Usage behaviour - Avg. number of sub-groups created, avg. number of times the story-board was accessed, Avg. number of messages exchanged in sub-groups before reaching a decision.
