How would you motivate the team to stack hands around your idea?

Situation- I was assigned as a product manager for a leading streaming solutions platform. The platform was launched in Q2 2020 and is plagued with lot of issues as the company that launched the platform worked primarily in the b2b business and didnt have systems or culture to support a b2c platform.

Task- The platform had lot of priority areas that needed to be addressed

a) Subscription model

b) Ad insertion

c) content pipeline

d) Entitlements

I was responsible for recommendations which as considered as less important compared to to the other areas. I was tasked with the effort for drumming up support and funding for fixing the recommendations engine

Action- I was invited to a meeting to present my case. I just opened up appstore review and walked them through five key ones where customers had done a comparison the product vs Netflix and how poor the personalization was compared to Netflix.

I then walked them through the network operations data and showed them how the video completion rates were affected due to users not finding what they wanted. With this, I was able to highlight both bad brand reputation and loss of business through low ad monetization. Business people were convinced by poor revenue numbers and marketing people with bad ad reputation.

Result- This meeting and presentation of data was the turning point after which there are significant support on spending and supporting personalization initiatives.
