What is the opportunity of adding a push notification feature to Youtube TV for Kids from 10 - 14 years old?
Clarifying Questions: Are we looking at a specific geography or all geographies? Assumption: Global Feature
Are we looking at any specific set of devices? assumption: TV
Are there any push notifications for kids currently launched: No push notifications exist for kids today. New push notifications need to be launched for kids from 10-14 years old.
What's the objective for adding this notification: Assumption: Increasing user engagement of Youtube TV
Product and the Company: Youtube TV is a subscription based live streaming service which can be used to stream live events from major broadcasters and popular cable networks. Their revenue model is subscription based monthly fees. The company's mission to launch this product is to ensure that they users are able to watch live tv without worrying about the additional hardware required to setup and any hidden charges for every household.
Customer: The target audience an individual household and is meant from everyone in the family from kids to adults. The adults would be the ones making the buying decision and they are both the buyers and consumers. The kids in the families are the consumers of the product. However, 10-14 year old age bracket need to have parental control and guidance as they are in their formative years. Parents are constantly worried on the kind of content their kids are watching and like to have an oversight. They either sit with their kids while the kids are watching tv or instruct the kids to keep parents informed whenever they are watching TV. This is a major point of concern and any feature launched has to be evaluated from this sensitive topic of ensuring parental control and guidance. Considering this aspect the objective for adding the push notification feature to Youtube TV from 10-14 year old kids is to increase user engagement by: a) ensuring the features meets the parents' expectations of and guidance b) ensuring that the features help 10-14 year old kids in their formative years.
Along with effort and impact estimates we also should add another dimension of harmfulness to kids. List of potential areas with effort/impact estimates:
Area | Feature Description | Effort | Impact |
Push Notifications for entertainment channels | Depending on the kids' previously watched channels | High | Low (Will antagonize Parents) |
Push Notifications for Educational Channels | Parents can select the kind of channels and series for which the kids should receive notifications. | High | Medium |
Parental Guidance Push Notifications | Parents can select the amount of time, channel and event which they want the kids to see. If the kid exceeds the time set by the parent then they should receive a notification which will prompt them to ask for the passcode from their parents. Parents will receive the passcode on their email id/phone number associated with the account. Additionally they should receive notification for the channel and event not chosen by the parents. A similar process will be followed here where kids need to ask for their pass code from parents. | Medium | High |
Recommendation: Based on the above arguments I would suggest the parental guidance push notifications as the first push notification. This will ensure parents to be stress free to the kind of content their kids are exposed to. These kind of push notifications will increase parents' trust in Youtube TV and they can be stree free on the kind of content their kids are watching.
