Let's define what we mean by “Teenage health” and “ Who am I “
I would like to start with Who am I
Big corporations like Google, FB etc who have access to their inherent products like maps, fitbit, android apps etc or an upcoming start up with limited resources and capabilities.
Do we have any competitor products that I need to be aware of, or is our product going to be first in the market.
Do I have time constraint to launch this
Do I have any constraint on pricing or markets I have to build this for?
Assuming Interviewers answers
You are a big corporation with unlimited resources and capabilities at your disposal
Yours is the first to market product so you define the market, pricing and there is no constraint (on constraint is to launch and land the product)
Now I would like to understand What does Health mean in context of teen
Health as such can be classified under 2 big umbrellas for teens
Physical
Obesity
Drug abuse
Alcohol
Eating disorder
Teen pregnancies
STD
Mental
Depression
Anxiety
ADHD
Smartphone/social media
Body image issue
Bullying
So which particular issue in general do we want to focus for this conversation
– Assuming Mental health is the one picked by the interviewer
Here is how I want to structure my answer
Identify why are we building this - Clearly narrow down the problem
Who all are we building this for - Identify user segments, user pain points
How will we build this - Product mission/vision, feature set, roadmap, rollout plan, GTM and Trade off
To identify why are we building this for,
I would like to further narrowed down by Gender types(M/F) and even Gender neutral types or we can solve for all teenages, Reasons for calling out Gender here because for Mental health we need to factor in additional hormonal changes(that are very gender specific or Gender neutral)
Depending on the location(First world vs Third world) and economic status, economic status (Poor, Middle class, Rich) combination of both defines access to health care, government assistance , Access to technology, education structure and support.
As the problem is very broad i would proceed making following assumption
We are solving teenage problem for all irrespective of Gender types
We are currently going to solve for First world countries(Poor, Middle Class or Rich) to begin with because
Mental health as an issue is being recognized and accepted well in first world countries. In Underdeveloped countries there are auxiliary problems of access to food, access to education and access to healthcare which might make it harder to narrow down the issue.
Solution we come up with might be easier to reach teens in First world countries with easier access to technology (Smartphones and consistent internet connections - at school and home)
I would also want to make a clear distinction between mental health caused by external factors (social media, peer pressure) vs internal factors (obesity, other physical health affecting mental issues ex: being sick longer has a mental impact). For this problem I would like to focus on Mental health brought in by external factors.
Summarizing the Problem statement
I would like to define our problem statement as
Build a Product to improve Mental health(caused by external triggers) of all teenagers in First world countries, irrespective of their socio economic status.
We are focusing on mental health issues as it is one of the major teenage causes of suicides, school drop outs, lagging back at school, depression, homelessness, juvenile cases.
Now I would like to focus Who are we building this for
Any products we build for teens should cover a well rounded feedback mechanism that is very important in resolving the Mental health issues.
Teens
Parents/Caregivers
Teachers - optionally
Counselor/Therapist/Doctors
I would like to list down the pain points for teenager have from mental health standpoint imposed by external factors
Not able to distinguish real issue vs superficial issue so they can move on
Information overload (Facts, Fake, controversial data )
Not enough support role models to talk to or to emulate
Unable to handle emotions
Peer pressure
Pressure from family to get good grades
Unrealistic standards set by social media
For the purpose of this discussion, I would want to build a app(which is both accessible on mobile devices as standalone app) or a web version (through a browser)
Success Metrics:
As its first to launch Adoption /User acquisitions and Activation the North Stars
# of App downloads
# of User signups
Daily Active users and monthly Active users value ->To keep any eye on stickiness
Quick Ratio = (Active user + Resurrected users - Retained users)/User Churn > 1
Counter metrics
# number of uninstalls
App would have clear
Onboarding
Usage
Feedback mechanism
Onboarding
Login through gmail, FB, okta or any existing accounts
Ability to share the digital wellbeing details to the app - to monitor social media usage in a day
Usage features
App has the capability to sync with the user calendar (School timing schedule) or have the user create calendar events. App will plan the user's day effectively with appropriate breaks.
App clearly highlights or provides the breakdown of time spent on social media, actual physical activities (basketball class, PE class)
App has a clear daily journal or daily check point call to actions ( okay, feeling annoyed, feeling overwhelmed, feeling sad etc)
Depending on the teens location, current news relevant to city, state, country and the news trends on social media(Tiktok, Facebook, Instagram,Snap) App will send out quick cards about actual facts, % of likelihood of that news, Subject matter experts opinion on the current events.
App will also surface messages which are specific to teens interest and are knowledgeable and cheerful
App can also be configured to provide a score card(mental score) of the day (Red, Yellow, Green) that can be shared with caregivers and therapists to monitor consistent Red patterns and to intervene. – This will be part of Feedback portion of app
Moonshot idea: Extend the App with VR capabilities so users can jump in and express themselves freely with a virtual(game mode-AI model) therapist to share their issues, and the model provides them a gaming course to tackle that will enhance the brain neurons to come out of the depressed mode.
Now I would like to weigh each one of these features against Impact to User, Impact to Company(Will company be able to sustain to stay relevant), Engineering complexity (Time to build and available capabilities)
Feature | Impact to user | Impact to company | Engineering Feasibility |
1 | M | M | E |
2 | M | M | E |
3 | H | M | E |
4 | H | M | E |
5 | M | M | M |
6 | H | H | M |
7 | H | H | H |
With the above breakdown i will focus on 3,4,1 and 2 for Initial launch, 5&6 in future roadmap, 7 into couple of years
Trade off
As we are dealing with user data we need to be clear of User data privacy, and security. We need to comply with each region's laws to make sure we don;t violate the law. Things like GDPR, Right to be forgotten have to be baked in.
Clarify: What is the goal of this product? Is this going to be a website or app or a physical product?
Let’s go with an app for now.
Users of this product: Teenagers (age 13-19) and their parents.
Use cases/Pain points:
- Food habits at this age are very important for overall health and development for a growing teen. Calorie intake also needs to be monitored to prevent the growing obesity in the teens. This is especially a concern for the parents more than the teens.
- Physical activity is also a big concern. Teens spend most of their time on the electronic gadgets with limited physical activity.
- Staying hydrated is a big concern for the overall health.
- Forget to go for annual health checkups.
- Don’t know which doctor to go to. Reviews for doctors not widely available.
- Mental health is often neglected when talking about health. The teens are especially stressed due to mounting pressure from parents and school about doing well in school especially nearing college entrance exams.
With these use cases in mind, I suggest the following features:
- Scanning your food with your phone camera which can recognize what food item it is and based on the portion size can log in the calorie intake. The app can also provide an alert when you daily calorie intake exceeds the recommended number (according to your BMI, weight, height etc). This app can send alerts to the parents’ app as well who can monitor their kid’s health. There could also be weekly articles about the dietary requirements and benefits for different food items that are popular among teens. There could also be articles promoting healthier alternatives of some food items.
- The app can track steps, exercise times, calories burnt, heartbeat etc. Teens can earn badges for increased physical activity which can be shared on social media to increase cred with friends. The app can also track sleep time and screen time and provide a weekly report of these numbers.
- Hydration reminders can be scheduled in the app according to the required need.
- The app will remind when it is time for the annual health checkup. It can store the results of the last health check up and new results and see how the overall health may have increased or decreased from the past year.
- The app could have reviews from other teens/parents about the doctors in the area. These reviews could help users decide which doctor they would like to visit.
- The app could have the option for online conversation with a therapist/doctor for any mental health concerns. There could be forums where the teens can anonymously post and discuss their issues with others of their age. There could be an option to track your daily moods in the app. If the mood stays angry or depressed for a few days, the app can send an alert to the parents so that they can talk to their kid and take further action if needed. We can also have links to various articles on stress relief techniques and posts for any group events for mental health awareness.
Having looked at all the potential features, I would like to look at the priority and ease of implementation for these features:
- Food Habits – Scanning the food item and recognizing it will be more complex since it would involve computer vision and AI. We could also have a simpler feature where the user enters the food item and quantity on their own without scanning it, to make it simpler.
- Physical activity – This is widely done by multiple fitness trackers, and it would be moderately complex to build.
- Hydration reminders – Simple to implement but not a high reward feature since already other apps doing this.
- Annual health checkup – Just the reminder would be easy to implement and benefit the user. The scanning and comparing old and new health reports would be a little more complex since it would include OCR or computer vision. But this would still be moderately complex. The reward for implementing this would be higher since user can track year on year health via the app.
- Reviews – This would include getting a list of all doctors in all regions and then users providing reviews for them. This would be a very extensive and exhaustive task with high rewards.
- Mental health – This would be a very important feature which would be moderately complex to implement but high reward.
Overall, my recommendation would be to implement features 1 (without scanning food, user enters food and quantity), 3, 4 and 6 because they would be not very difficult to implement and would cover a lot of fitness requirements for teenage health.
- Clarifying questions
- Physical product or app? - App
- Targeting any particular geography? - because reasons of unhealthy lifestyle might differ- US
- Startup or established company? - Google. Big corporations like Google, FB etc who have access to their inherent products like maps, fitbit, android apps etc or an upcoming start up with limited resources and capabilities.
- Time frame to develop the product- 6 months
- Teenage definition - 13-19 years old range is roughly targeted.
- Health - physical, mental alone or complete solution - you can assume
- Goal - enter new segment and look for market viability - user acquisition and engagement
- PS - design an app to improve health of 11-20 year old in US and roll out product in next 6 months.
- Users -
- Suffering from physical health issues
- Suffering from mental health issues - this segment is not well served, people suffering are increasing
- Facing since a long time/chronic
- Face it occasionally due to certain stressful events in life
- General issues faced due to changes in teenage years of life - a very bug segment because all teenagers are affected by this
- Secondary users - parents, therapists, schools and colleges
- Pain points/needs
- Need to understand that they are struggling with issues and should consult a therapist
- Find a therapist - affordable, can feel comfortable to talk to
- Need to join support groups to discuss with others facing similar issues
- Get affordable medicines
- Develop good habits that will help deal with these issues for a longer period of time
- Get info on what to eat, sleeping, exercising, meditating

Clarification
When we say product is there any constraint there in terms of what kind of product, physical vs digital? If there is no constraint then I'm going to suggest we focus our efforts on something digital as that will be easier to both scale and iterate upon.
Going to assume this will be platform agnostic, it should work well on mobile, desktop, or as a web app.
There are many different types of health. For example, physical, sexual, and mental. For the sake of this problem let's focus on improving teenage mental health as I feel that is an area that doesn't get as much attention as it deserves especially after everyone just spent all of COVID indoors and isolated from each other.
Goal
Our company is going to try and embody the notion of doing well by doing good and focus on helping teenagers live happier and more productive lives as our first priority. We will not worry about revenue or monetization right now.
User Segments
It's tought to come up with a magic bullet that solves everything for everyone so one of the ways in which I like to narrow scope is by looking at different user segments and choosing one to focus on. I can see two different ways of divvying up users:
One way could be by their actual mental health issue, someone suffering from schizophrenia may have different pain points than someone dealing with OCD.
- Anxiety
- Depression
- OCD
- Eating Disorder
- Schizophrenia
- Etc.
Another way could be by level of affliction / how problematic their mental health is:
- No mental health issues
- Prone / Vulnerable to mental health issues
- Impacted by mental health issues but coping
- Greatly impacted by mental health issues and struggling to cope
Now let's look at this through the lense of someone dealing with mental health isues and think about what are some of their pain points and areas of frustration in regards to improving their mental health:
- It's hard to find a therapist that gets me
- Therapy and medication are expensive, even with insurance
- How do I know what is and isn't covered by my insurance? In or out of network? 90 day prescriptions but not 30 days?
- Theres a lot of stigmas against mental illness and I don't want to be seen as crazy
- It's hard to see the light at the end of tunnel and that things get better / sense of hopelessness
- Therapist Matching Tool - We could ask therapists and the teenagers to both fill out a survey asking a variety of questions and then match them based upon their answers as well as other variables. For example, if the therapist and teenager both grew up in the same town that type of commonality might help them build repoir.
- Social Platform - Dealing with a mental health issue can feel very isolating so it could be a good idea to help people not feel alone by creating a platform where users can post about their struggles and other users can offer words of encouragement or just relate to what the user is going through.
- Crowdfunding platform for mental health treatment - The cost of treatment can be prohibitive and people fundraise for other health issues such as cancer so we could build a platform that does something analogous but for people dealing with mental health issues.
I would like to start with the below :
1. What is the goal of the product ? Assume it’s the general health problems faced by teenagers/ potential problems that they could be faced with
2. What kind of product are we planning and why are building it? Is it a general educational product or product which offers certain services too? Assume that it’s a mix of both
3. The target segment: is it parents or doctors or teenagers or are we targeting schools as well? Assume that it can be accessible by all.
4. is there any particular geography that we are targeting? Assuming that its for Indian region and since it’s for a general population, in which some have access to technology and apps and websites and some don’t.
Next, I would like to segment the problems faced in the below categories as well as gender-based problems too :
1. Obesity/ food habits: this is an issue faced by both males as well as females and hence solutions should be addressed for both
2. Puberty issues: This is an issue faced by males and females differently. Females as well as their parents at a lot of times are not aware of the potential issues that can happen post the onset of menstruation. They don’t have the knowledge or even someone to consult at times. Hence, this should be divided.
3. Mental health: This is an issue faced by both (however the variation can be different for both the genders) and specially in these times can become a major issue.
Summarising the above, we are building a mobile application that provides educational content/awareness and paid/unpaid services for parents/teenagers and schools. Its focus will be on mental health issues, growing up/puberty-related issues, and general health issues. The app for now will be built for Indian consumers.
Next, I would like to focus the solutions for each of these segments and further divide them as a paid/unpaid feature :
For these, the app will have the following unpaid features :
1. Scanner for food items which will help the parents or children realise the nutritional content of various food items.
2. a general diet chart/activity chart: this will also be for both parents as well as children. They will have to input certain details of the child (eg. Height/weight/ age/ general habits etc) and basis that an activity chart or a diet chart will be generated. This will be an unpaid service for a month. However, since this has to be actively monitored, hence an option will be given to convert this to a paid service after a month or two.
3. Educational content: This content will be for parents specifically which will analyse the food items that should be consumed/ or how to inculcate habits amongst teenagers etc. This educational content will be generic covering other problems too and can be subscribed.
4. Health tracking: No of steps/ heartbeat/ calories burnt/sleep time etc. The user can also track the success of their friends or acquaintances and the individual goals or group goals can be set and achieved.
5. Gamification services: Since teenagers are fond of games, certain educational games can be built in the application which will also help the children express their issues freely as well as gain the necessary knowledge
6. forums to discuss ideas and problems anonymously which can be answered by the users as well as expert
The paid services that will be available are :
7. Yoga/ activity/ meditation services: This program will be on the application and divided into two sections. One will be an unpaid service for 15 days which can be converted into a paid service post the 15 days trial. The program will also be divided between generic as well as specific problems. An instructor will be provided and this will be a video program. The specific problems can be PCOD/ weight gains/ hypo or hyper suitism etc
8. Doctors consultation: This will be an online consultation either on a video call or phone call to mental health experts/ certain specialist doctors etc. Since the teenagers are not very comfortable sharing their issues with even their parents at times and do not have the proper guidance from an expert. This app will also let the users know the reviews of each of the doctors and their areas of specialization before they decide to subscribe.
9. Since the app will be used by schools too, there can be certain programs specifically targeting these schools.
Before I delve into the priority of these solutions, first analyse the set of metrics that should be tracked :
1. #of users downloaded
2. #target segment of the users who downloaded
3. # of signups for these services
4. # of users who converted an unpaid service into a paid service
5. Which service is generating maximum traction (this can help us analyse and improve)
6. # of uninstalls before the user even explores the entire app
7. # of subscribers to the content posted as well as #of unsubscribers
8. average time spent by user on the application
9. # of users who are option for cross services
Next is the priority/impact matrix of these features and compare this with ease of build :
Feature | Impact to user | Priority | Feasibility |
1 | H | H | Complex to build |
2 | H | H | Easier to build |
3 | H | M | Easier to build |
4 | H | H | Easier to build |
5 | M | L | Complex to build |
6 | M | M | Easier to build |
7 | H | H | Complex to build and will require tie ups too |
8 | H | L | Will require research |
Considering the above, I believe we should start with the MVP and then scale. Hence, focus on 1,2,3 and 4 and then gradually build the other functionalities
