1) Describe the Product

Before anything else, Facebook Messenger is the product that allows a more direct, live conversation between people. Messenger offers many features such as sharing content (video, photos, etc), foward messages, write or record messages, use of emoticons, and others. Ultimately, Messager also allows users to call by voice or video, create rooms, like video chats, share location, and transfer money. It can be accessed through Facebook (up right corner) or own mobile app. Is that right?

Taking into consideration that Meta's goal is to connect people all over the world, Messenger ignites that goal by bringing faster and closer interaction between people by enabling direct messaging/conversation. Does it make sense?

2) Clarification

Now, getting into the core question, I would like to clarify some things. There are many types of users who can use the Messenger. I can think of:

- Seller/Buyer: This group comes from Marketplace relationships. Sellers want to sell their products, therefore they must use Messenger to communicate and explain Buyers' doubts. Buyers want to find the right product and clarify any question they might have, and the fastest way to do it is using Messenger. The main point here resonates to ask and answer questions.

- Business: Businesses have to communicate to their customers through their pages, and eventually through Messenger. Similarly, they need to provide clarifications to customers. The main point here resonates to ask and answer questions.

- People: This is the broadest user who are common people trying to talk to each other. There are many goals involved, some of them can be: talk to a friend, organize something/event, share content, transfer some money, know about a job, etc. The main point here resonates to flexibility and options to satisfy user needs on a daily basis. *In these group I am also inclusing people who talk with Businesses.

So, in order to rate Messenger, I would like to focus on a broader way, accessing only one point that matters for each group. Does it sound good or do you want to focus on only one group?

3) Goal

Therefore, Messenger goal is to foment connection, thus engagement among users in the Facebook Platforms. Ultimately, people get what they are looking for, and spend more time on the platform, generating more revenue from ads. Looking at each group, we can have:

Seller/Buyer: Sellers use the product as a job tool, thus it has to offer quick and easy ways to manage messages. This means that sellers must know what product that messages come from. On the other side, Buyers research many products before making the final decision. They also need to know what product that message comes from. Moreover, the app must offer a simple and easy way to send photos and pictures of the products.

- Business: Businesses may have the same needs from Sellers at Marketplace. However, because they generally use Ads Manager, they need more information to manage the messages, therefore knowing from what ads/posts tha customer is talking about is important. The conversation here can be longer and broader, which makes the SLA more important than ever.

- People: Generally, people can talk about anything, but options and speed are important points. At Messenger, people can text, call, or video-call others. Moreover, they can also share content from their own devide or create it real-time. Speed means that users can access those features without much trouble, and easily find them while navigating through Facebook.

4) Rate

So, I would try to rate Facebook Messenger in the following way.

--> Categories to rate and rate of each one

- Seller/Buyer

  • Information of the product
  • Share content
- Businesses
  • Robust management (time, filter, etc)
- People
  • Options available and easiness to access them
--> Weights of Groups
I am assuming that People consists of 80%, and Businesses and Seller/Buyer 10% each, from the total user groups.

- Seller/Buyer
a) 3 => From a buyer stand point of view, the message seems the same from others, which make difficult to remember if it's from Marketplace or not. Although after accessing that message the user can see the name of the product and its price, he/she needs to get more details in another page. It could contain more information to make faster decisions, such as ratings of the seller and the product, something like it. We can assume similar logic for the seller.
b) 5 => It's very easy to share content on Messenger. The most used actions are very explicit, one-click to get it (photos, videos, sharing).

- Businesses
a) 4 => Businesses can manage the Messenger messages on Business Suite. Over there, they see the customer profile, attribute tags, take actions such as archive, delete, and attribute to another. Moreover, they have some filter options, but no sort options. Overall, it's a very good tool to use, but it lacks some important features such as sort of, segmentation (automatic) of customers, schedule of messages, and others.

- People
a) 4 => Many options are available for users to interact with each other (payment, chat, video, calls, sharing, etc). Moreover, they are very easy to access, one-click ahead most of the times. However, the only concern is when an user has to deal with many messages on a daily basis. Because the app does not have segmentation (tag) and filter, it may be harder to go over the messages, choosing which one to answer, etc.

5) Final Rate

Therefore, my final grade would be

0.1*(3+5) + 0.1*(4) + 0.8*(4) = 0.8 + 0.4 + 3.2 = 4.4

Taking into consideration those groups and their main needs/usages on my opinion.
