Clarifying scope:
1. Are we talking about the google home mini or Google home max
2. What is the reason behind redesigning the google home speaker?
3. Is there a specific goal in mind that we would like to consider?
4. Any other constraints that I should know before we think about redesigning
Assumptions
Let’s consider google home assistant, the reason behind the redesign is to improve the device engagement.
Objective: Redesign google home to help improve the user engagement
Users:
Kids
Home Makers
People who come tired after work and would like some automation in their house hold routines
Adults
Pretty much everyone home use google speaker and I would like to focus on home makers who multitask and would like to automate some of their routines and people who use google home after work hours.
What are some of their needs?
1. Talk to google home speaker from anywhere in the house and activate a skill and this could play music, dimming the lights, controlling the temperature etc.
2. They would like to have a contextual conversation with google.
3. They would like the smart assistant to be able to understand the user’s routine and automate the tasks being performed.
4. They need google to be able to translate and speak to them in their native language.
Let’s take an example: Sheetal would like to have the lights dimmed in her study room and light music played. How can we set this routine that would wow the user?
Solutions
Solution | Impact | Effort | Tradeoff’s |
User sets the routines and the time in the mobile app and google assistant follows it | Medium | High | As the routine tasks increase it will be mundane task for the user to enter all that they like into the mobile app.
Sometimes the routine by have a shift in time and if google automate the tasks without user reading a book it might irritate them. |
Google understands the routine and observes the pattern for a couple of days and automates the task it. Sheetal says “hey google, I’m reading my book” Google: “would you like me to dim the lights and turn on light music” Sheetal: Ok | High | High | Patterns in user behavior keep changing and google will need enough sample data to be able to automate the tasks and needs to be updated with the user behavioral changes |
Metrics to track success:
1. No. of automation tasks triggered with confirmation from user / no. of tasks triggered
2. No. of automation tasks triggered with rejections from user / no. of tasks triggered
