Situation- I was assigned as the product manager for developing a streaming services application for a media services client. The content pipeline for the client was still in infancy. The business objective was to monetize the legacy content and create mindshare with customers
Task- I was able to understand the customer pain points and prioritize the features though the issue was that the backend content pipeline would not be ready in time for product launch.
Action- The planned product features needed to be significantly changed due to this finding of the technology backbone. The feature list was limited to browsing, adding content to watchlist with limited scope of engagement and monetization. Thus I recommended to the busines team to defer the release of the product till we get the content pipeline upgraded to support rich features such as recommendations, various fidelities of content playback etc. that might push the overall release timelines over 6 months- 1 year
Result- By mapping technical implementation complexity, cost & timelines against product development timelines, I was able to pivot the goal to something that was achievable and beneficial to the company in the long run
