Clarification questions:
1) Is the goal to improve user engagement?
2) Is the goal to acquire new customers?
3) Is the goal to boost the revenue?
User groups
1) Home buyers or tenants
2) Home Sellers or Renters
3) Real estate professionals
Prioritize user groups
I woud prioritize the group with the largest user base. That is home buyers or tenants. Because when we create demand in the marketplace, it will be easier to find the supply.
User pain points
1) There are several options to buy or rent homes but it is difficult to do the comparison analysis in terms of amenities, rent/price, walk score, transit score, etc.
2) It is not easy to find the information about the facilites in the neighborhood such as supermarket, hospital, public transport, airport, shopping mall, movie halls, police station, and how far they are from the property
3) It is difficult to assess the quality of schools in the neighborhood, crime data, demographic distribution, etc.
4) there are not virtual reality capabilities built that simulate the home showing
5) there are not user generated content about the quality of the home, security systems in the home, maintenece issues, etc. Because user generated content is trustworthy source of information in general for the buyers. It can also include Q&A section that would cover some of the most frequently asked questions.
Prioritize pain points
I would prioritize the pain points that zillow is uniquely positioned to solve them such as a) comparison chart b) virtual reality capabilities c) user generated rating systems and Q&A section.
Brainstorm solutions
1) Comparison chart: It allow the users to select multiple homes from the neighborhood and perform the comparison across the standard set of dimensions such as rent/price, walk scroe, transit score, amenities, unit size, age of the home, etc.
Effort would be moderate because we are not building new technology and impact would be high because there is no other aveneue that offers this capability today
2) Virutal reality capabilities: It would simulate the experience of in-person home visit. Users can also observe the view from the home, can get a feel of size, style and vibe of the home.
Effort requirement is high because we have build a new virutal reality technology ground up and impact is high because it will enrich the experience of house hunting, enable the user to make more informed decisions that do not regret later, save time of in-person visit in many cases especially for the elderly and people with disabilities.
3) User generated rating systems and Q&A: Users generally trust more the unbiased opinion of the community than the homeowner or the builder. Key details in the user generated rating system will enhance the home buying/renting experience.
Effort required is moderate because we have to ensure that it can scale and cover all the markets; impact is high because there is no other alternative for this type of information. It will make zillow a one-stop destination for home buying and home renting experience.
Conclusion
In an quest to make an zillow one-stop destination, we can proritize the features to address the customer pain points that are not currently addressed by any other parties.
