My approach to dealing with difficult stakeholder is

  1. Engage
  2. Listen patiently
  3. understand their point of view even if it is impossible sometimes

Situation: I was supposed to integrate a commercial partner based out of PA on a new data product that I was managing, the partner is a famous commercial banking product vendor and has almost every US bank in its portfolio. I wanted to engage their SME on this new product integration, but the partner was not willing to prioritize it at their end due to resource constraints and other competing priorities

Task: The partner was supposed to be synchronized with the trusted data, as this would solve the large pending data quality/compliance issues at my end

Action: I started documenting the facts in terms of business value and impact, met with the partner, and emphasized, have we not implement the integration this may cause us xx million dollars in operations work and another million in penalties from IRS/FED.

Result: After presenting the right facts, I got the partner onboard to dedicate the SME to execute my vision of bi-directional integration and I deployed the feature in 6 weeks

Situation- I was assigned as a product manager for a leading media client. They were in the process of migrating their legacy content pipeline to new pipeline built using Microservices and AWS. The customer in this case were the content ops team who wanted a new UI incorporating all features of the existing platform plus a few new features

Task- My task was to work with the development and business organization to prioritize this UI and it associated features both in terms of timelines and funding

Action- There was lack of support of the development and the business team since these functionalities will be eventually be automated and they didnt see a reason to develop a UI that will be temporarily used. The content ops team on the other hand would not a go ahead to the pipeline without the UI.

The solution that I recommended was to create a simple HTML page. The HTML page will access the AWS SQS queue to a list of all pipeline open tickets. A program would then run a query on the database that would update or add tickets to the content pipeline. The solution took only 7 days to develop but became a stop gap arrangement before automation could be implemented.

Result- The solution addressed the immediate concerns of the content pipeline team while building trust with them that we had their overall needs in mind which would be prioritized as part of the longer term solution
