That's an interesting question actually, Please give me a moment to think about it. I would like to say that the Kindle app (Kindle on Mobile) is a good idea but not designed well. I have a habit of reading physical books and started trying kindle, I could not even complete a book as the reading experience is not upto the mark in my opinion. There might be many who must like to read on kindle, but I would like to talk about the persona who is just started or trying to build a habit of reading.
Kindle is doing good in terms of providing a marketplace where users can get access to the most of the books, but I feel it is not well designed in terms of providing the best reading experience:
Painpoints: Generally it is quite hard to zoomin and read the content as usually, the font size of the content is small and this makes unconvinient to read.
Access to External PDFs - Whenever user wants to read something which is not from amazon, they cannot easily read. I mean in general people want to keep all the reading material or books at one place, this experience makes it very unconvenient.
If I have to improve it, I will consider the following needs and behavior of users reading online:
- Often gets distracted due to notifications or any other messages and likes to read without any distraction.
- Don't usually remember the content read till date for most of the books if the user is new to reading or inconsistent in reading the book.
- Lack of motivation is a reason to not finish the books.
Improving Kindle on Mobile:
By incorporating the following features, we can improve the reading experience on Kindle:
1. Interactive Font size: User should be able to change the font size according to their convience which will enable them to read more conveniently.
2. RecapGPT: This enables the user to recap the content that was read till date. It gives a very breif summary with the same tone of the book and prioritises the content that was read in the last few reading sessions. This will help the reader to push further and read.
3. ReadingBuddy: User should be able connect with other peers who are interested in the same type of genre or books, this feature should be designed such a way that users can read at the scheduled time of the day and can interact with each other. This give motivation to read, but on a side note, there will be users who enjoy reading alone.
4. Shortening the userjourney of uploading the external pdf and able to read it in the app will not only improve the reading experience but also increase the engagement on the app as it is making the Kindle like a go to place to read.
Yep thats it from my side.
