Interviewer: any users
Candidate: does the user base imply active users or just app downloads
Interviewer: active users
Candidate: are we looking at product-related initiatives or marketing related initiatives or any initiatives to grow the userbase?
Interviewer: up to you
Candidate: The business goal is to grow the active users including paid and free users for linkedin
Interviewer: yes
Brainstorm solutions to increase the user base
Improve the product discovery:
Maximize the product visbility using the search engine optimization. It will make the product easier to discover on app store, play store, google web search.
Create referral rewards to tap into the power of word of mouth advertizing.
Simply the sign-up process:
by lowering the barrier to signing-up on linkedIn, we will driver the userbase. for instance, instead of having the users create username and password specific for linkedin, we can have them use their existing google/amazon/facebook/instagram accounts to sign-in.
Serve additional use case to attract more users:
Job specific suggestions: owing to the numberous job postings availble on linkedin and data on job applicants that succeed, linedin has the resource to find out the skills and certifications that are required to land a job.
When candidates is interested in the the job on linkedin, linkedin can suggest the educational content that would improve the odds of getting the job.
Interview coach program: Today linkedin does a great job in helping candidates find the open job postings but it falls short when it comes to helping the candidates prepare for the interview. We can create interview coach program where candidates can find people that are already in the role at the company that the candidate will be interviewing for.
Mentoring program: Offer mentoring program for people that are new to a particular job role. For example, we can allow users to create photoframe that signals that they are open to being a mentor. That ways users can approach them to get a new mentor.
Expert advise program: Users might require advise on their professional work. For example, users might want to get feedback on their ppt that they have created. By creating the expert advise program, users would be able to find experts that help them.
Discuss trade-offs and priorities of the solutions
Solution | Trade-off | Cost | Benefit |
Product discovery | N/A | Low, need to optimize for important search terms | High, increase the traffic at the top of the funnel |
Simple sign-up | If the user deletes their their party account (example: facebook account), it will impact the sign-up process | moderate, need to onboard with thrid party systems with their api | high, simplify the sign-up process |
Job specific suggestions | N/A | high, need to invest in creating educationl content | high, increase the chance of finding a dream job |
Interview coach/mentoring/expert advise program | Ability to find qualified professionals that are willing to participate in the program | high, need to invest in recruiting efforts to find the qualifies professionals | high, these programs will help to continously upskill the professionals |
Prioritization
If I were to prioritize only one solution, I would create program that helps professionals to get help for interview preparation, to get carrier adivce and to get feedback on their work, from experienced professionals.
