I want to better understand the question.

1)We are trying to build a product that can help estimate home repair costs or reduce? (either)

2)I think we can consider both to be tied to each other. 2ndly I think inherently we are also saying that this might be a 2-3 way marketplace whereby there are people who want to fix homes and are seeking for estimates and there are handyman / sevices companies who want to provide estimates. Is that accurate? (yes sure).

3)Thirdly, are there any bounds as to what type of product it has to be? Something hardware oriented, software oriented, etc.? Is it service based product? (your choice....this is your exercise for you today.)

4)Any specific goals leadership has shared? Do we have any specific market data that cuold drive our decisions? (no)

5)Can we assume that this is a FB product or a brand new company? (your choice again. I would really like you to solve it so let's see where your mind's at).

Ok, sorry but watned to clarify few things just in case there is a specific direction that we needed to go. I don't think it's going to really matter here that it's a FB product or not other than the fact that FB has a huge advantage of connections so that could be leveraged but I also don't see why we would do this for FB considering we have Marketplace already but on the other hand I think there is value of leverage larger network of people. So let's do it for FB.

And would I be mis-aligned with you to think it's better for us to sovle for consumers vs. businesses? I think cojsumers are higher chances to be using FB to find work like this vs. a business that usually has a whole slew of legal and contractual standards that they have go through to bring from only specific set of contractors + they usually already have contractor they work with. New product cosnumption would be more for consumers.

Interviewer: Fair.

Me: Thanks. So there are ultra rich, then there is low cost and mid-range ffinancial capability who are cost concious but who also are able to spend a bit on nicer stuff. Overall, I think FB should build someting that works for all group but I thikn they need to focus on those are who low cost need jjust because most active users of FB per my understanding are young people hwo haven't had much time in their lfietime to amas some wealth. Aer we tracking?

Interviewer: Yah that's about right.

Me: ok, we know their #1 goal is saving money but they are also quite tech savy and have more time they want to spend on social life. So I think they also want something quick and dirty for estimates. 3rdly they are less likely to shop around in physical stores and many of these folks actually live in the city so that's hard to do. I think that's a good set for understnading my user unless you want us to explore this a bit further?

Interviewer: No I think that's good fornow. I would like you to quickly see if we can think of some soutions here coz we do have other things we would like to cover.

Me: Ok sorry...Give me 3 mmin to think through this? (sure)

Me: So., I m going ot put on a filter for user experience overall and solving for all of their key issues but at the same token I think I want to build something that my users will use. Benefit of adoption here for FB from a business standpoing is higher engagement and retention overall and that helps drive FB's bottom line.

1) The product should enable user to upload pic of the room that they want to renovate but also mandates posting sizes. Since every room could look so different maybe there are no set fields for let's say LR width, length, etc. but we can use vision recognition to then showcase as recommendation on the pic itself as to what measures should be provided. Measurements can then be inputted on the pic itself so maybe an editor tool that can help do

2)I think we should allow for anyone to provide services and their estimates but there is a downside where in a moshmo like me could say here is my estimate and I can do it and my quality can be terrible. So there would need to some controls to not allow for this. But here the idea is anyone can post their estimate and then it be recommended for that user to share thier past work (each profile can have a section separate from pic albums to save these projects and share) and we should reocmmend estimators to have their clients refer them directly. There is downside that I could just contact my friend to say some great things about me though.

I think above two solutions solves a major problem for my young adult user who doesn't want to have to wait around for the handyman to come home and estimate. In fact, after COVID maybe I don't want 10 diff people to come home for etimates. These 2 solutions make estimation process 100% remote and possible and in fact it also serves my biz customer (who provides services) to not have to drive around for estimates. It lowers their cost and time committment. It will hence motivate both, consumer users and businesses to use this product more.

3)I tihnk we can make this a 3rd side market place by now letting ML predict based on your other data what vendor you are more likely to buy from based on cost, other choices like fashion choices, location, etc. And so now vendor products can be marketed to you in the form of non-marketing material and more of a suggestion of what your room could look like with different produc ts and you can then choose to buy that product by clicking on it and finding out what vendor offers it for how much. Maybe this is how Isntagram and FB can be integrated since Isntagram already has some of this built as part of shopping product I think. I think this is going to be quite difficult considering we have to build logic to somehow magically make a new pic of what a LR wuld look like with new piece of selection. While this isn't estimation directly, I do think it funnels more user adoption since the product not only helps me get estimates easily/remotely but also can make my shiopping lot easier.

4)The product should also let me share with my estimators which of the top 3 different choices I would want to go for. This matters because if I am laying down vinyl planks cost is cheaper vs. laying down porcelein tiles. Sometiems decisions are made based on labor and material cost too and estimate doesn't depend just on size of the room. The downside here is that if I end up choosing a really nice looking room, estimators will artificially inflate their cost just because they know "this guy got money. he will likely be willing to spend more"./

5)We can also have some metrics for consumer around avg. estimates in your area, avg. estimates you have gotten personally and similar type of metrics could be built for the business / estimator persona as well.

I think these are enough but I did just have 1 more thought:

6)Tagging onto #3, you can use a VR glass to walk around in the new looking room and experience it yourself.

Overall, I thiknwe going to want to start with something minimal while we work on other aspects of the roadmap in parallel. I think #1 and #2 are primary and the advantage of this is also that just because now every consumer can get so mayn quotes, it will make estimators reasonable. This will entice more consumers to use this product coz there is less risk of price gouching.

OVerall, i think if we want to build and succeed in a product to help estimate repair costs, we need to think about young people since those are the most likely to use facebook and they have lower financial capability in general. + I think power of social network can be leveraged for the overall good. I would want to ensure that producti s being used and adopted maybe a month into summer when people mostly rennovate by measuring #1 of estimates gained, #of rooms / user, # of different users who have used the product, etc. But I think it also would be important to see if we can guage sentiment.

Clarifying Questions:

First I would like to begin by clarifying - what we mean by building something for home repairs?
Is this a new app stand alone or is it a hardware device that we are interested in exploring?

I: Digital App. Assume part of FB or separate App

Ok, thanks for clarifying the scope

Is this something we are trying to solve for a specific user or use case in mind or is it open to my interpretation and assumption?

I: Open to interpretation

Based on the clarifications : the scope of the problem is to build an app that helps solve for home repairs. In my opinion this could be integrated within facebooks core app and potentially leverage the strategic advantages the app has to offer interms of the huge network and depp understanding of the social and interest graphs.

I want to begin by stating FBs mission which is to give people the power to build connections and bring communities closer together. We want to keep the new product which is being designed to help with Home repairs tightly integrated with this mission so we can benefit from the strategic advantage facebook can bring to it such as a vast network of people already available on the platform. Keeping this in mind the mission of building this product should be to facilitate interactions and support in home repairs redered by people in a community to each other.

Historically it has been observed that man is a social animal and we survive better through our interedependence on each other. We need to harness the power of community through all aspects of product built on the FB platform

I would like to begin by laying out the approach on how I would like to tackle this problem:

1. First I would like to understand the right target market and user segment for this product

2. Second, I want to identify the pain points and user needs - specifically understand the underserved user needs for this user segment and prioritize the pain point which delivers the highest impact  in driving towards our goal

3. Lastly, I want to brainstorm a variety of solutions to address this user need and execute by recommending a feature set and building out an MVP based on this feature set

4. AR based solution so the expert can simulate what the person is trying to accomplish and show exactly how to go about it

User Segmentation

1. First time home owners

This group of users i typically a very enthusuastic set of users who have recently bought a house and want to bring their touch to the house

2. Long term hom owners

This group typically makes home repairs based on wear and tear needs

3. Renters/Landloards

Renters like to make updates to their home in a non intrusive way. Only slight updates to the interior look and fee that is not permnant

Based on the above segmentation - I want to prioritize the First time home owner segment as this segment has the potential for a very high impact to FB. SInce we will be rolling this as a 0 to 1 product we want to ensure that the adoption is very high and users find value to want to return back in future.. This will also help to drive up overall engagement on FB platform

Painpoints and underserved needs of the first time home owners

1. Do not know how to creatively enhance the space

2. Lack of money due to heavy initial investment so inclined to DIY

3. Lack of knowledge on how to go about making certain improvement

4. Need assistance from helpers/people as project is too difficult to work on

Priorirtize for: Lack of knowledge on how to go about making certain improvement

Criteria: Highest impact to users, leverages FB network, Ability to gain revenue from home repain small businesses in future through ads and services

Solutions:

1. Videos/Live sessions by experts on certain common topics and users can engage - Existing solution (fb groups)

2. Connect users (home owner) to home imporvement expert/consultant to assign project to them (H impact, Low Cost, Low Effort)

3. Catalog of before/after ideas shared by members of the community (L impact, L cost, M Effort)

4. Collboratively work with members of the community to do home improvements on the home owners by brainstorming idea (H Impact, M Cost, M Effort)

Prioritize: The solution of connecting Home owners to home imporvement experts allows people to consult with them over video/audio and ask relevant questions.

If need be they can also come over and assist in person as the matching should be based on location

Also, if the home owners are unable to execute they always have the choice of falling back on the expert to bring their own people to complete the project

This solutions is perfectly aligned with the mission to build communities and bring the world closer together as people can rely on each other to seek support and get necessary help

The success criteria (Metrics that matter) would be to evaluate for Adoption which was the goal we are trying to drive towards

1. # New users signing up on the home imporvement platform

2. # Number of conversations between the expert and home improver

3. Net promoter score

4. Total number of Daily, weekly and monthly active users

5. Total number of pictures shared with sucess story of completing a project

I would launch this MVP based on geography and rolling it out to one area at a time as it is based on the physical proximity of the home owners to the home repair experts. The market i would try to chose would be upcoming resedetial real estate that are getting several new properties  in the year to come. This would give me good data to evaluate and validate my hypothesis

In my view when you started listing the user cohorts you went off track - the question was related to home repairs and cohorts are defined in line with home enchancement use cases

however from a problem solving structure perspective the approach is sound
