The Paytm Soundbox
Problem It Solves:Small vendors, such as vegetable sellers and tea stall owners, often operate in noisy, fast-paced environments. They juggle between managing products, handling cash, and attending to multiple customers at once. Before the Paytm Soundbox, they had to constantly check their phone or connected device to confirm payments which essentially :
Consumed time
Led to errors or missed payments
Created trust issues with customers ("paise aaye ki nahi?")
The Soundbox automatically announces the amount received after every UPI transaction in the local language.
It removes the need to manually check phones.
Vendors can hear the payment confirmation in real-time while continuing their work.
Customers can’t claim “payment done” falsely anymore — it builds instant credibility.
It’s inclusive , even tech non-savvy users can use it.
It reduces cognitive load for multitasking vendors.
It’s localized and affordable.
It has a tangible impact on trust and efficiency at the last mile of commerce.
Daily Hardcopy Summary: A printout (or SMS-based summary) at the end of the day to keep track of all transactions for vendors without smartphones.
Inbuilt Calculator: Many vendors use separate calculators — integrating one helps them quickly total bills.
QR Scanner: Adding a scanner makes the device more versatile.
Battery Indicator or Alert: To avoid situations where the device dies mid-day.
Multi-language switching: Some vendors may serve diverse crowds — easy language switching would be useful.

Casual Learners | 30 | Medium |
Life-Long Learners, Professionals, Culture Enthusiasts | 20 | High |
Sr No | Problems or Needs of the User (Serious Students, Travellers) | No of Users | Depth of Pain |
1 | Making notes while learning is my habit. I am not able to save or bookmark any important concept or write random notes. | H | H |
2 | The exercises are way too slow to build upon learning new words or letters. I feel like I am wasting my time, answering repetitive questions in the exercises. | M | M |
3 | The pronunciation of words is robotic and I find it difficult to relate to a native Korean speaker. | H | H |
4 | Sometimes, I need to know the context in which the word can be used. The app is more like a translator. There are stories but they are unlocked way to ahead in advance levels. Also understanding the grammar is also a key in speaking. I don’t want to learn a language without understanding how to speak in formal world. | M | L |
5 | As a learner I am bound to make mistakes and Duolingo punishes me by deducting the hearts. After I am out of all, My learning stops. Either I have to wait for the hearts to refill, practice old lessons for hearts, or pay for plus version. | M | H |
Sr No | Possible Solutions | Impact | Effort |
1 | Highlighter & FlashCards: The user can select text and add it to his notes. Also, whenever he clicks on that point, he’ll be redirected to the same lesson. User also should be able to add certain words into their Flashcards collection. After adding any word, automatically an image, meaning, pronunciation and sentence usage should be appended in that card. | H | H |
2 | Dash Learning: In this, the user will do the exercises in only 2 ways: Meaning & Pronunciation instead of the conventional where it’s 4-5 different ways. Additionally, snippets of notes can be referred by the user, where he directly learn from the text and then instead of doing the exercises, he just gives the final test which marks his unit as complete. | H | L |
3 | Human Voice: Adding human recorded voices for every pronunciation activity. Alternatively, we can use both robotic & human voice. The student first practices with robotic voice and then at the end a video lesson of a person saying all the words/phrases in the native korean accent. | H | H |
4 | Typewriter: Encouraging the users to use Korean mobile typing board and use it to write a sentence, para, essay as a writing assignment will help users practically learn how the words are used in context. Also, providing reading materials with translations will also help. Apart from these, while learning new words, phrases below that usage of the words/phrases in different contexts should be provided. Grammar Nazi: After user has achieved a proficiency of understanding words & phrases, the emphasis should be on grammar lessons. English grammar can be used as a reference and then Korean grammar can be taught with detailed video lessons. | M | H |
5 | Heart Pump: Apart from paying and getting unlimited hearts, the better approach can be testing the user on the past incorrect concepts and if they are able to answer 80% of them, their hearts can be restored. Also allowing the access to reading material of the next lessons should be given. Students can learn & practice it. Once their hearts are restored, they can directly attempt to take the test and move ahead with next lesson. | H | L |

My favourite product is the game Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild. It's Nintendo's 4th best-selling game of all time, with 300M+ copies sold, and the 17th installement in the Legends of the Zelda series. I have fond memories as a kid playing my first Zelda game, Legends of the Four Swords, on the Gameboy Colour.
But as an adult, the games became repetitive with the same game mechanic: relatively linear progression, with puzzles and enemies leaving you feeling like you found their (game developers) solution, rather than yours.
Why I like it
Breath of the Wild redefined the franchise with its emphasis on player freedom, while still keeping the core of the Zelda game. Realising that their fans have grown up and don't need their hand held, they innovated on:
- Open-world: fly, swim or climb your way around the expansive open-world terrain.
- Progression autonomy: no straight path to completion, only guidance.
- Solution autonomy: provide players with a set of flexible set of tools, and let them solve problems how they want.
To build this game, Nintendo also had to innovate the game's physics engine, open-world object rendering and redevelop the whole game mechanic.
What we can learn
The game showcases more than the ability to embrace change from an old company, but also some fundmental truths about the benefits of user freedom in product design.
- Flexible tools and processes, over structured processes.
- User autonomy, over rigid constraints.
- Customisation options, over one-size-fits-all.
What can be improved
While it's hard to improve a game with universal critical acclaim, there are some improvements that could be addressed in the gameplay mechanics. Open-world is great, it comes with it's own challenges. Some improvements I would make to address the challenge are:
Find a simpler way to move upwards: Climbing in the rain in-game, like in real life, is almost impossible - you'll slip. And it rains often, so traversing upwwards up a mountain would mean just waiting for the next day. Could the player:
- Have a power that allows them to ascend through terrain?
- This would mean revisiting player-terrain mechanics
- Build something to quickly teraverse around it?
- This would mean introducing build mechanics
More densely packed map: The world is huge, but it can sometimes feel empty travelling, with nothing to keep you busy. Could the player:
- Defeat more monsters?
- This would mean new character designs
- More puzzles to complete?
- This would mean new puzzle designs
- Increase weapon durability?
- This would mean weapon and enemy balancing
- Add a reforging mechanic?
- This would mean adding new mechanics and obbject interactions

B - Business Objective/Describe the product:
Google Pay (GPay) is a digital payment platform developed by Google, aimed at simplifying financial transactions for users. It allows users to link their bank accounts, credit cards, and debit cards to make seamless payments, both online and offline. Additionally, GPay facilitates peer-to-peer payments, bill payments, and enables users to store loyalty cards and tickets digitally.
U - User Problems:
ng spent over 13 years in the banking sector, I've observed firsthand the challenges users face when it comes to managing their finances. Some common pain points that GPay addresses include:
Convenience: Users often find it cumbersome to carry physical wallets and make cash transactions. Also transferring money to someone through the traditional process of cheques, RTGS/NEFT, IMPS etc is cumbersome and time consuming.
Security: Security concerns are paramount in the banking sector. Users may be hesitant to adopt digital payment platforms due to fears of fraud or unauthorized access.
Language Barrier: While many online banking apps offer language choices, but for most people, the understanding of banking terminology even in their native language like Hindi is difficult. That creates an apprehension about using online apps like GPAY.
S - Solutions/Summary:
The following are the solutions that Gpay offers to the above pain points.
Convenience: GPay addresses this by implementing robust security measures such as encryption and two-factor authentication.
Security: GPay addresses this by implementing robust security measures such as encryption and two-factor authentication and also the Google Brand which instills confidence in the customer. They use the best of Google's Artificial Intelligence and fraud prevention technology to identify suspicious transactions in real-time.
Language Barrier: Gpay has very smartly offered a Hinglish option in their 10+Language options (and the first one at that) which will make the understanding of banking terminology and processing of a transaction very much easier for the average indian citizen.
To further improve the user experience and address existing pain points, I propose the following solutions:
Wider Array of Options: Gpay should provide a wider array of payment and other options on the lines of its closest competitor, Phonepe, thereby making it a one stop destination fulfilling all needs of the user.
Integration of AI-driven predictive analytics: To further enhance efficiency, the integration of AI-driven predictive analytics could be used to anticipate user preferences and streamline the payment process even further. For example, by intelligently suggesting payment methods based on past transactions etc, GPay can further reduce the cognitive load on users and enhance their overall experience.
Personalized Insights: Implementing AI-driven analytics to offer personalized spending insights and budgeting suggestions would empower users to make smarter financial decisions.
Offline Transactions: Developing functionality to facilitate offline transactions would further enhance the accessibility and convenience of GPay, especially in areas with limited internet connectivity.
Gamification/Incentivization: While Gpay started by providing incentives for every transaction and is still doing it for referrals, partnering with merchants to offer exclusive discounts and cashback incentives would incentivize users to use GPay for their transactions, driving user engagement and loyalty.
A suggestion from the business perspective: Almost 95% of Indian Smart Phone users are Android Users- which is generally logged in using a gmail id and Gpay usually comes in the package of free, pre downloaded apps on these phones. Now the unique UPI users in India are approx 330 million and say 95% of it approx 314 million already have GPAY preinstalled on their phones. But the Gpay penetration is only 67 Million active users. So it seems Gpay is not making use of this leverage that they already have. More incentivization can be offered to the customers to switch to Gpay. More needs to be learnt about this unutilized opportunity and its related reasons.
Prioritizing the solutions:
Feature | Effort | Impact | Priority |
Wider Array of Options | High | High | High |
Integration of AI-driven predictive analytics: | High | Medium | Medium |
Personalized Insights | High | Medium | Medium |
Gamification/Incentivization: | Medium | High | High |
Offline Transactions | High | High | Low |
In conclusion, Google Pay has effectively addressed many user pain points in the field of digital payments, but there's always room for improvement. By prioritizing enhancements such as Wider array of options and gamification/ Incentivization, GPay can continue to innovate and solidify its position as a leading digital payment platform in India's fintech landscape.
Zepto is my favourite product, known for its rapid delivery, typically completing orders within 8-10 minutes. They provide a speedy service for groceries, essential items, and a diverse array of products, ranging from gift stores to makeup and more.
In comparison to competing products like Blinkit, Swiggy Instamart,& Dunzo Zepto's commitment to its value proposition of delivering groceries within 10 minutes is commendable. In my personal experience, I've consistently received orders within 8-10 minutes, rarely exceeding this timeframe
When I think about why it's my favourite, it comes down to three key design questions
How useful is it?
How innovative is it?
Is the product easy to use and understand?
In terms of utility, Zepto stands out for its user-friendly interface. The platform conveniently organizes various categories for easy exploration. Additionally, upon placing an order, the home page features a "Products for You" section, showcasing previously purchased items. This feature minimizes the need for manual searching, enhancing the overall user experience. In addition to its user-friendly design, Zepto boasts two noteworthy features that contribute significantly to its appeal. Firstly, the Zepto Cafe impressively ensures ultra-fast food delivery, often within just 10 minutes, catering to those moments of immediate hunger or when time is of the essence. Secondly, the innovative Zepto Stories feature showcases influencers and individuals discussing various products. This not only fosters trust in the platform but also provides a seamless ordering experience with a simple click. These distinctive features set Zepto apart from its competitors, adding a layer of innovation and uniqueness to its service.
Finally, the product is easy to use and understand because various categories are listed for easy exploration and navigation as well.
To summarise, my favourite product is Zepto because it is innovative and easy to understand
Though I'm a fan of Zepto, a recent alteration in their delivery policy has caught my attention. Initially, users enjoyed free delivery for orders above 99 INR, but the recent change mandates a minimum order of 199 INR for free delivery. I believe this adjustment might affect user retention and lead to a drop-off in usage. The attractiveness of free delivery, especially for orders above 99 INR, played a crucial role in acquiring and retaining users on the platform, considering India's price-sensitive market. I've noticed another recent change in Zepto – they've discontinued their referral program. This piqued my curiosity because just two months ago, I conducted a product teardown to understand Zepto's referral program. The program, offering both the referrer and referee 25% off on a new user's first order, was impressive. It not only facilitated user acquisition but also generated positive word of mouth, increased engagement, and personally brought me the joy of enjoying a 25% discount four times as I referred my friends (Based on my secondary research, particularly app store reviews, I've come across users expressing their curiosity and interest in the whereabouts of the referral program)
User problems:
U1: Lack of adequate customer support services
U2: Wrong items/expired products delivered
U3: Minimum order value changed
U4: Referral program discontinued
Pain Points | Effort | Impact | Priority |
Wrong items/expired products delivered | High | High | P1 |
Lack of adequate customer support services | High | Medium | P2 |
Minimum order value changed | Low | Medium | P3 |
Referral program discontinued | Low | Medium | P4 |
Wrong items/expired products delivered: Integrating a scanning machine in the dark stores to check the expiration of products and by implementing a pre-prior check through the scanning machine, you can prevent the dispatch of expired products from the outset, saving time, resources, less human-error and implementing a double check station where a second employee verifies the packed items against the order details before finalizing the shipment. The second employee could just visually check the item on a digital order screen
Lack of adequate customer support services: Automated solutions like high-level chatbots and improving the chatbot's NLP capabilities to better understand user intent and context and keeping the chatbot’s interface simple, intuitive and easy to navigate
Reassessing the 99Rs+ free delivery and reinstating the referral program could further boost user engagement and attract new users. However, prioritizing the resolution of pain points 1 and 2 at the moment will have a more significant impact, fostering increased trust among users.
My favourite product is Splitwise.
Before explaining what is it, I'd like to talk about the problem in my life which it is solving.
Problem: What is my Job to be done?
I have lots of shared expenses with my friends, colleagues, family members and flatmates. Sometimes it becomes difficult to ask for the amount I paid for them due to stigma. Also I feel conservative if I paid for the whole group and I didn’t get my money back.
Solution:
What is it doing?
It is an android or iOS based simple app where I can add my spends and share it with the people I spent my money with. It saves it and easily tells everyone who is owing me and how much. It has removed the stigma of reaching out to people for the money they owe and simplified my communication as well.
How is it doing?
Efficiency:
The tool offers a smooth way to add expenses which is just a click away
It records every expense as ledger and is visible to everyone so that i don’t have to remind any of my friend
It even adjusts the total amount my friend owes if he paid for my expenses on our next outing to keep balances always up to date
It gives me whatsapp like group or individual spaces to add my expenditures accordingly
Innovation
It categories each expense in predetermined buckets helping me to analyse my past expenses and compare easily.
It gives pre-built functionalities like split my expense equally or unequally or who spends how much without me putting too much brain into it.
Availability: Easily available as ios/ android app, and light to download without taking too much space in my phone.
Room for Improvement: there are some pain points still needs to be solved
I need a payment mechanism within the app as i don’t want my friend giving me excuses of not able to pay me due to external issues
I need it to help me in my budget planning as I have added all my expenses to it
I need to have a guest account functionality where even if a user has not downloaded the app can still interact with our shared expenses to overcome the challenge of not able to resolve owed money
I’ll roadmap my feature list as per the below ‘Final Order’
problem | Strategic alignment | impact | Effort | Final order |
a | m | h | h | 2 |
b | l | h | h | 3 |
c | h | m | l | 1 |
[Restructuring and adding certain steps to the originally posted answer by one of my peers here @Ruchi Sharma]
My Favorite Product is "WhatsApp"
Step-1: Describe the Product
WhatsApp is “Primarily” a messaging app available freely for Mobile (android, ios) & Desktop users
It allows users to:-
To send messages - text, video
Make calls - audio, video
It’s one of the early products invented in 2009 which solved the problem of communication via the internet.
Before that people used to communicate via sms for messaging.
Step-2: Explain what you like about the Product
When I think about why WhatsApp as my favorite product, it comes down to 3 key points.
Useful - Is the product useful and solving a key pain point?
Efficient - Is the product solving the issue quicker with less effort from the user
Innovation - Is the product solving the user problem in a new way.
Useful
Allows communication (message, calls) irrespective of region or country
One doesn’t need a ISD connection to be able to connect to friends or family in other countries.
Enables Users to share media in messages.
Enables users to collaborate by forming a Group.
Innovative
WhatsApp has continuously come up with innovative features to engage & acquire new users. Ex:-Voice Message
Enabling users to record a voice message and share.
This has impacted a huge customer base who are not very good at typing like users in the age group of 45 to 60 and belonging to tier 3 cities.
WhatsApp web
Connecting your laptop with your mobile phone via scanning a QR code is very innovative.
It gives the end user the flexibility to use WhatsApp through laptop/desktop.
Fingerprint Authentication
Adds another level of security to the app.
With this feature enabled, even if you leave your phone unlocked, your chats cannot be accessed by anyone else, until it is verified by your fingerprint.
Efficient
Ease of usage.
Users need not learn new representations for each task
In application tutorials are not required to educate users.
It comes natural to them.
[ Improvement Steps: Step-2 Onwards]
Step 2: Clarifying the Scope (To narrow down the scope of the Question)
Are We concentrating on any specific region ? - No
Any Particular Platform to be focussed upon (Mobile/ Desktop)?
Assumptions
Platform: Mobile
Since Mobile usage is increasing rapidly as a next platform
Step 3: Choose a Goal (Select one goal and give your reason for the same.)
[If the Interviewer does not have any particular goal in mind, then we’ll make our own assumption for the Goal and explain the reason behind choosing it]
Assumption:
Goal: Driving Engagement
The main mission of WhatsAppl is to enable easy connection and collaboration of people across the world and thus bring them closer to each other and instill a sense of community.
User engagement is something that aligns very closely with this mission of WhatsApp
for this reason we will be focusing on improving user engagement for this question
Step 4: List the User Groups & Select one
Now we will divide the users based on their usage
Individuals: Want to engage with their Contacts
Students
Working Professionals
Old Age people
Businesses: Want to engage with their Users
Startups
Big Corporations
Step 4.1: Select your user group and state your reason for the same.
For the scope of this Question, we will be focusing on improving the Engagement for “Students”
Step 5: List down user Pain-Points/ (Use Cases) & Select Prioritize them
Pain-Points for Students
Website Links
Students receive a lot of website links in Whatsapp
Clicking them would open in any other browser.
Additional click to open an external application like chrome or firefox.
They have to again navigate back to Whatsapp to continue reading the messages or they might not even come back to whatsapp.
Recent Trends
Students would be interested in recent trends or follow topics happening around the world to keep them updated.
Inter-Communication among other Social Media Apps
They love Sharing content among other social media Apps like Fb, Insta
Selling old Items
Would be interested in selling old items - Books, stationary, etc
[ Since No. of Pain Points are decent in number, so skipping the Prioritization part ]
Step 6: Brainstorm Solutions (for these prioritized pain-points)
#PainPoint-1: Solutions [ Website Links ]
Inbuilt Browser
By Default Inbuilt Browser will be used to open the links received on WhatsApp
This would skip the extra step of choosing the 3rd party Browser to open the link.
This would keep the user intact with WhatsApp itself, instead of moving to other platform.
#PainPoint-2: Solutions [ Recent Trends ]
Content Feed
Allowing users to follow topics like News, Sports, Movies, etc
WhatsApp would deliver curated content from official sources
This would help in eradicating “Fake News” spread through WhatsApp
#PainPoint-3: Solutions [ Inter-Communication among other Social Media Apps ]
Share Option
Allowing users to share content among other Apps in the Fb ecosystem.
This would improve the Engagement as a whole in the Fb ecosystem.
#PainPoint-4: Solutions [ Selling old Items ]
Sales
A separate Platform dedicated for Sales (similar to Status)
Users can post their Items for sale
Step 7: Evaluate Solutions
Prioritize the solutions based on meaningful criterias like:
Impact to end user, Implementation effort
Solution | Impact to end user | Implementation Cost |
Inbuilt Browser | High | Medium |
Content Feed | High | Low |
Share Option | Medium | Low |
Sales | Low | Medium |
Based on the above criteria we have prioritized the following Solutions:
Inbuilt Browser
Content Feed
Step 8: Define Metrics (List down the metrics that you'll evaluate and track for these features.)
A) Inbuilt Browser
[ No. of Links opened in Inbuilt Browser ] / [ day (month) ]
Avg Time Spent in Inbuilt browser - /day - /user
No. of Users returning to messages after viewing the websites in the inbuilt browser
B) Content Feed
Avg Time spent in reading the content /day (or month)
No. of Articles read by users /day (or month)
Follow rate of Topics
Step 9: Summarize your answer
In order to increase the Engagement,
I would recommend WhatsApp to build 2 features: (a) Inbuilt Browser (b)Content Feed
And, measure the performance of these features using the Performance Metrics as defined above wrt each feature.
My favorite product is STRAVA, Labelled the ‘network for athletes’, Strava has built up an active userbase of cyclists who sweat by the app. The phrase “If it’s not on Strava, it didn’t happen”. One of the USP of the product is its platform agnostic and work as close competitor to fitness app with wearable brands. It has more than 100 million users
3 killer features of the products are:
competition,
tracking or metrics
discovery
3 persona:
Casual Athelete
Regular Athlete
Enthusiast- motivated by social elements
User Journey:
Record the activity
Activity time tracking
Post activity summary
Sharing in social media apps
Usage dashboard
Community app to track
Pain Points:
Daily/weekly goals like in smart watch
Not having interactive features (App assumes you are trained or educated athelete)
No education on workout or some recommendation
Auto-pause
Sync with headphone to share milestones
Social Media Engagement
Advanced analytics and insights
Accessibility features
Offline mode

I have mentioned 2 products 1st is hardware and 2nd is software and the methodology i have used is Ease to use , Reliability , Functionality
1. Brave
Why I like this product
Brave Browser is all about giving the user a faster, safer, and better web experience. Instead of bombarding users with ads and trackers like many websites do, Brave automatically blocks them. This not only speeds up the browsing experience but also respects user privacy.I appreciate how Brave has identified a real user pain point (privacy concerns) and built a solution around it.
Ease of Use
1. Familiar Feel: Brave uses the same underlying tech as Google Chrome. So, for anyone switching from Chrome, Brave will feel like home. This reduces the barrier for users to try a new product.
2. Automatic Privacy: With Brave, you don't need to be tech-savvy to have a private browsing experience. It blocks ads and trackers on its own, which means users don't need to set up anything or add extra tools.
Reliability
1. Consistent Speed: Because it cuts out all the extra (and often unnecessary) ads and trackers, websites on Brave tend to load faster. Users can count on Brave to deliver a smooth experience without unexpected lags.
2. Safe Browsing: Brave is serious about safety. It offers protection against harmful ads, trackers, and even more sneaky ways people try to collect your data.
Functionality
1. Earning while Browsing: Brave introduces an interesting twist - users can opt to view certain ads and get rewarded in return with BAT (a type of digital currency). This way, users have a say in their browsing experience.
2. Advanced Privacy with Tor: For those who want an even more private experience, Brave has a built-in Tor option, which is like putting on an invisibility cloak when browsing.
2. Sony XM5

3. Quick Attention Mode: By placing a hand over the right ear cup, the volume is instantly reduced, allowing users to quickly tune into their surroundings without removing the headphones and also when I am removing my headphones the content that I am viewing automatically pauses and resumes as soon as I wear it.
My favorite product is google calendar. I will talk about -
1- The Product
2- Users and their needs
3- Solution provided by google calender
4- Comparison of the tool with respect to other solutions
5- Wow Factors, why do I love most about it
6- Areas for improvement
1- Product - It lets users manage their work scheduling, meetings, and overall planning of the day. The product is available in web and app versions.
2- Users and their needs
Business users -
A -They want to schedule a meeting with their colleagues in accordance with their availability.
B - They want to confirm with participants if they would really join the meeting.
C- They want to view/modify their planned day schedule
D-They need alerts when a particular activity is about to start
E- They need a path to quickly attend the meeting virtually or a guide to move to the physical location.
F- They need alerts during the call so their agenda is properly covered during the call.
G- They may require a task list, whiteboard, or screen sharing feature during the call.
H -They need action items to post meetings so that actions are taken on them
Individual users -
A- They want to schedule their day
B - They want to mark certain events so that they don't miss out on them
C- They want to schedule/ attend calls with friends and families
Solution
Google Calendar address most of the needs mentioned above. They have features to view schedules, plan an event after checking the availability of participants, tools like screen sharing during the call, alerts, confirmation from participants, and many more things.
Comparison
1- In comparison with manual scheduling, google calendar is very efficient. It reduces manual efforts and is more accurate, transparent, and easy to use.
2- In comparison with Outlook calendar, it has a simpler UI to address most of the business needs.
For example,
A- there could be sometimes confusing to pinpoint the current day on the outlook calendar while in google calender it is pretty simpler
B -While scheduling the meeting, outlook users have to add accurate email IDs if there were no past interactions among the users, while Google allows you to add all emails existing in the organization.
C- Outlook calendar has a lot of options that may not be very useful to all the users, while google calender has fewer but important features.
D- In the outlook calendar, you need to insert skype/teams call link which sometimes users may forget as it is not very obvious, while in google calendar it is very obvious and easy.
E- Outlook keeps alerting users for past events until they are dismissed, google alerts only as per the notification setting, once an event is over, alerts are not shown.
Wow Factors of Google calendar
It can auto-pick events from Gmail, like flight tickets, hotels, etc.
Improvement Areas
It could be in one of the following
1-User acquisition
2-User engagement
3-Revenue stream
4-AI usage
It would require us to check key product metrics and figure out which area if improved would generate a greater impact on company goals.
The revenue stream from nonbusiness users is one of the areas which is highly neglected and has good potential for positive user engagement as well. Google can think more on these lines
1- Show services based on existing events in the calendar
For example- a user has is arriving at the airport at the night and has the next flight in the morning, the calendar can suggest (can have a distinct design that indicates that it is just a suggestion) to book a hotel
A user has marked her wife's birthday on the calendar, google can suggest buying flowers or planning something the day before the event
2- Paid events
If there is a music concert, there could be ads to join the event
So to summarize, I started with what is google calendar, then I talked about two user sets and their problems, then about how google calendar solves them, then how to google calender is better than its competitors, then what are some wow factors, and then finally areas of improvement in google colander.
My all-time favorite product has been “Quora”. I will try to put my points across this product using a simple approach of U- Useful, E- Efficient, I- Innovative.
Quora is my favorite platform, and I have been using it quite a while now. It’s an app/web platform, where people put their doubts, thoughts and answer questions related to questions on what they have experienced. It’s a great knowledge sharing platform.
Useful – Quora is very useful product if you have any doubt in mind related to any job offer, location reviews, company honest feedback, you will find everything here. You are allowed to post your questions and person who has knowledge about that topic or have experienced the similar environment or situation will share his/her experience on the same. Another interesting thing is you meet people around the world, you ask questions and you get good no of answers to your problems.
Efficient – There are lot of people will be positing their answers, so It will just ask you to post your questions that’s it. When people will start answering your questions, notifications will pop-up and here you are with lot of solutions to your problem. Quora has helped so many it’s users to overcome loneliness and depression by letting people sharing their feelings and encouraging each other. People also got dedicated jobs using platform by reading all the answers related to interview process.
Innovation – It’s very innovative product in the market since 2010. It’s allow you to share your view point and it let the other person also help you with the solution with his/her possible knowledge. You can also use text, images, videos or link to make your answer more self-explanatory. It has been made by using Python, C++ & other algorithms which makes it very advance. There are 190 million users out there who are using Quora and sharing knowledge with each other.
Improvement Area:
Overall Quora is a great product but I would to improve few things in the app.
· You can’t simply send the message to the directly, you will have to search for user name in the message box and if he/she enable you to message them then only you can message him. I would like to add a feature which at least let the profile know that x,y, z user is wish to connect with via a messaging.
· You can’t see if the person has seen your message or not, if a feature can be added to know if message has been seen or not would help the user to decide further.
So far I can think of only these improvement area.
What is your favorite product? Why?
My favorite product is the Playfully app and service. I used it for both of my boys.
What is the Playfully app?
Playfully is an app for parents for children ages 0-3, designed to help parents spend more meaningful moments nurturing their children.
Why is it my favorite?
The app is my favorite product since it is useful, efficient, innovative, and user-friendly.
It addresses two needs that I have: spending meaningful time with my kids and spending less time preparing for it.
Useful - It addresses my need to do meaningful and creative activities with my kids that match their age and capabilities - I never knew what they could do at every stage. The app suggests a variety of activities we could do based on the capabilities of my kids and the activities that they did in the past. The app knows what we did in the past, tracks their progress, and offers activities that can challenge them a little bit each time.
Efficient - It explains what, how, and what it “trains” the kid to do - each activity described with text and images, so it is easy to follow and understand its meaning for the kid’s development.
Innovative - It designs my mindset - the app reminds me to spend meaningful time with my kids - the service sends email notifications weekly and on every round date. It reminds me that parenting doesn’t stop; it is not just a one-time article or a book that you read and can forget.
The app is well designed and user-friendly.
I did try a few competitors as BabySparks, but no one offered such a wide variety of detailed activities.
How to improve it? (if being asked as a follow-up question)
I would recommend adding videos. Sometimes I don’t understand the instructions; a video could assist. It could also help non-native English speakers.
How to measure its success?
Engagement
Track the number of video plays
Track the number of activities marked as completed (probably better to test with an A\B test.
Track average session duration.
Monetization
Track retention.
Track how many users joined from non-English speaking countries.
Duration of subscription.
Another aspect could be social. Currently, there is no option to share thoughts and experiences between parents; it could create a community around the product and increase engagement and create a viral effect.
Approach
1. Choose the product and give a brief background and its business objective
2. Talk about user segments and select one to focus on
3. Outline the reasons why it is my favorite product
4. Suggest improvements to the product
Choose the product and give a brief background
Whatsapp: It is free app that one can use to communicate with family, friend, colleagues through text, voice mail, voice call, video call. It's business objective to help bring people together
User segments that it serves: A) Individuals to connect with family and friends B) Businesses to connect with customers
I am going to talk about the product from the prespective of the individual user
Reasons why it is my favorite product:
A) Efficient: It offers the cheapest form of communication method to stay in touch with family and friend in different countries;
B) Easy to use: It is very intuitive to use that young kids to senior citizens, college graudate or rural farmers use the product without any difficulty.
C) State of the art translation features: I can type a message in english and translate it to other langugae using the in-built feature and send the message; that way i can communicate to someone whose langugae i do not speak
D) Offers multiple methods of communication: I can use image, video, voice mail, voice call, video call, group voice call, group video call to connect with others
E) Privacy, no ads: Though the app is free, it includes no adds; also the conversation is encrypted end to end and is secure
So Whatsapp is my most favorite messaging app.
That said, I feel that are certain aspects in which the app can do better
A) Pay friends using whatsapp: Users want to send money and receive money from friends and family; payment service would be hugely helpful; users do not have download another app such as venmo
B) Translator/Read aloud: New feature that would translate the voice mail and read aloud the message from one language to any other language; it will allow people that cannot read/write to still communicate
C) Spell and grammer check: Integrate with 3P services such as grammerly for spell and grammer check; it is especially useful for someone whose is communicating using their second language
D) Notify me: Feature that let the user when their favorite contact is online; thus it helps to reduce the lag in text communication
E) Customize notifications for contacts: Turn on/off the message notification for certain contacts, just as we turn on/off the message notification for certain groups
This is my first ever attempt at these product questions. Any feedback is welcomed.
Product interview question.
Tell me about a product you like and use frequently. Why do you like it? - Uber App
When I evaluate whether or not I like a feature, I think about 3 criterias:
Is it innovative? Is it useful? Is it honest?
I’ll use those criterias to evaluate Uber’s ride feature.
Uber- is a ride hailing services. Passengers request for a cab via the Uber mobile app (iOS or Android). The cab arrives at specified location and takes customers to their destination.
Pros
1. Innovative:
- Riders once they confirm the ride can see the driver's profile. The app also provides infomation about the model of the car, the license plate, name of the driver and photo of driver picking them up.
2. Useful:
- To make services more safer, passengers can share ride location with a friends and family through whatsapp and sms etc, letting them know where they are easily and quickly.
- Automatic payment through the app means riders can enjoy ride without having to reach for their wallet. Also if you riders travel in a group they can easily split the fare
- Flexibility riders can call the cab when they are ready and expect the ride to come directly to them. No need to stand at a station or taxi rank
3. Honest:
- Rating system, New riders are able to view drivers ratings before booking. This option reassures new riders about what to expect on their trip. The ratings could also help riders decide whether to confirm a trip with the driver
Cons
1. Innovative:
- Accuracy of drivers data for example, sometimes the photo ID of the driver can be outdated and may not always match.
- Also rider can only confirm rides, they cannot select a particular drivert select the driver you want. The app offers the drivers closest to you.
2. Useful:
- Those with no card or those who don’t have the Uber app cannot use the service
- Flexibility can sometimes depend on location and time of day. Passengers can be subject to long waiting time if they are further out as the services of uber drivers may be limited
3.Honest:
- While the app provides customer with honest feedback in the form of ratings, I have mixed feelings about the ratings. Riders are unable to verify who’s rating the drivers, ratings could be subject to bias. It's possible the driver's customers could be his Friends and family, ratings could also be down to unconsious or conscious bias (i.e. discriminating views), drivers could be intentionally encouraging passengers to rate him highly before they leave the car as way to helping boost their scores.
To recap, I like the uber app because it meets the 3 criterias for a great product. It's innovative, useful and honest.
My favourite product is inShorts. It is a news aggregator app which provides short news summaries. It covers one story in form of a card. This card has an image (or set of images or a video) at the top with a summary of 60 words or less at the bottom. In case the users are interested to read the entire article, they can access the original article in just one left swipe. The users can set their preference for various sectors/categories of news. It also allows searching old shorts based on keywords and topics. Additionally, it also conducts frequent polls where users can provide their opinion about recent developments..
Today there is a lot of content available online, and people do not have time to read newspapers or long articles. This app caters to the user group who want to keep abreast with the latest news/happenings quickly without reading long articles. This app is also very popular amongst youngsters and students who are preparing for entrance exams. It is clearly not for people who like to read opinions and editorials.
My criteria for evaluation of a product are Use frieldliness, :
User friendly: The design is very simple yet very engaging. Users have to just keep swiping for new content or swipe for detailed news article. There is a visual on top of each card which quickly provides the context of the news. The text section at bottom is kept short (60 words max) which needs less than 30 seconds to read through. Thus, the investment of time per card is short enough for users to read through even if the story in itself might not be the most interesting one. The overall design keeps users swiping for more content.
Useful: The app aggregates news from most popular sources thus acting as one stop shop for my requirement of reading news. Further, it also allows me to set my preferences on categories which means I do not have to sift through articles/websites to access content which interests me. Thus it serves the purpose right.
Efficient: Saves lot of my time by bringing the relevant content to me and also by summarizing the news in shorts . Further, it also has AI engine which understands what I like to read and delivers more of similar news without me explicitly setting the preferences.
There are few competitors. Biggest news aggregator in India is DailyHunt as it supports 14 languages. Further, there are apps like googleNews, YahooNews, AppleNews, etc. However, they are traditional news aggregators which do not provide a similar user experience. Further, they usually just have headlines (with or without an image) and not summary of the article. For Inshorts you just have to swipe and tap. There is hardly requirement to go back or scroll through long pages. This kind of user experience is missing in other apps.
Improvement areas for the product:
1. Sometimes certain words are new to users. There is no way to search meaning of words in the app.
2. Users are interested in local news too. Inshorts currently does not provide local news.
3. For visually impaired and old people, the text size cannot be increased.
4. Personalization of news feeds is not always correct. Sometimes users do see news which is not relevant for them.
Solutions for Improvement areas:
1. Can integrate with google api to search and translate the meaning of certain words.
2. There are many English newspapers for local news. Integrate with them. Plus, tracking of user location might not be necessary. Users can be asked to set a geographic preference or AI can be leveraged to see if a user is interested in news of specific city/country.
3. Allow zoom or text size setup.
4. Can give users an option to mark if the news is not relevant to improve the AI engine. Recently there are lot of complaints on the app feedback where users are seeing Bollywood celeb news.
Requesting seasoned PMs to provide feedback @Mo14 @bijan. TIA
I like the Application "Dr Lal PathLabs" available in India for Android and IOS.
This application is made to cater to patients looking for easy access to blood tests and other inspections.Dr Lal PathLabs provides access to booking a test at your home and lists all the prices and combos available in your region. Apart from this, the application also provides a repository of all your past test records, which you can use to compare and detect trends in any health changes. The application also stores the invoices of all your records, removing one more non-value-add step from the user journey. After testing, the report is also directly uploaded to your dashboard. Therefore, the patient does not have to go to the centre for collecting reports.
Dr LalPathLab also provides care packages for diabetes, pregnancy and cancer with extensive info about the diseases and what tests are recommended by doctors for them. Over and above, it also assists with diet plans and exercise plans in the packages.
Improvement Areas:
1. Application UI - The user interface has too many thumbnails for different features, which reduces the ease of use for a non-tech savvy person.
2. Test Combos - Patients who want to add multiple tests are charged separately for each test. However, some combinations of tests are already part of a combo (lower-priced), but the patient is not recommended those combos while adding tests.
3. Past orders and Reports not synced - Past orders tab can be used only to download receipts or reorder the same test. The reports related to the order or the details of the tests in that order are not present. For reports or details, the user has to go to a different tab altogether for reports.
4. Notifications - Once the report has been finalized, in most cases users do not get any updates on the application unless they log in and check. A notification for a newly uploaded report will help improve the customer experience and also saves the user time.
Would love any feedbacks :)
Elevate is my favorite product. It is a mobile application available on Android and iOS platforms.
The business model for Elevate is to cater to the universal desire of people to improve their cognitive skills like effective reading & listening, processing speed, accurate speaking, memory and maths, etc.
Personally I love it a lot as I enjoy taking the workouts which are small brain training exercises on the App that help me improve in cognitive skills in a very fun filled yet intellectual manner. The app resolves several pain points for me, e.g. I don’t need to spend long hours polishing my skills, I don't have to look for learning material, moreover I can learn amazing stuff in small intervals, on a daily basis without getting bored for a single second.
This makes me prefer spending time onElevate as compared to a competitor app like Lumosity.
The Wow factors that make me fall in love with Elevate are:
- Workouts. These small exercises are a fun way of learning and have been designed very accurately and differently for each skill. They’re very short and non repetitive, hence less time consuming and non boring for the users. Filling each exercise/puzzle gives an instant sense of progress to me as a user in a short time span and that makes me spend more time on the App.
- Notifications to review recent errors. As a user, I receive notifications within the App to remind me to review some of my recent mistakes that I made during the workouts, to help me improve. For example, if I made spelling mistake by writing Altitude as “Alltitude” while doing the exercise, I can review this mistake later through visiting the notifications section on the App where I don’t just see the word with the correct spelling but also see it’s meaning, where it was derived from and exactly what mistake I made while performing the exercise (added an extra L). I find this feature extremely helpful to be mindful about my mistakes.
3- Achievements is another amazing section in the App that helps me stay motivated to take more workout sessions as it gives me a sense of accomplishment. There are different kinds of achievements that I can make while playing the App, i.e. “Persistent Player”, “Accurate Player” , etc. Each achievement has a different criteria to pass, for example, in order to become a Persistent Player, I’ll have to train for 1 hour everyday. I think all of this makes the App interesting to another level and I really find this feature very innovative.
4- Game Statistics. Elevate shows me my game statistics in a very easy to understand manner. With the help of a simple toggle button, I can see the stats like my highest score, difficulty level that I reached in the game and my ranking amongst other users. What’s interesting about this feature is that I see my stats against different attributes associated with a skill. For example, “Memory” is a skill and it has attributes like “Focus”, “Retention” and “Sequencing”. So, as a user, I see my progress in the form of highest score, difficulty level, and ranking against each attribute under the skill “Memory”. This makes it a great feature as I can make sense of my progress in a particular skill.
What I’d like to remove from Elevate?
Elevate has a feature called Daily Streak which I’d like to remove from the App. There are a couple reasons why I don’t like this feature.
Almost every feature in Elevate, other than the daily streak, has the guide/about section to introduce users to that feature and to let them know its importance in the game. I am aware that Snapchat has a streak feature and how it works, but how will a user who doesn’t use Snapchat will know what a streak is?
My concern with this feature is that it is there in the App without any description or guidance, hence a user who is not familiar with streaks in the gaming Apps, would find it difficult to understand the feature.
Secondly, even if a user does understand what a streak is, I still feel this feature doesn’t serve a purpose in the user’s journey or experience on the App. For example, unlike in snapchat, if a user tries to maintain its streak with another user by continuously sending pictures everyday, he/she would see the outcome in the form of a stronger streak which appears in numbers next to the streak icon. Seeing the streak strength develops a sense of bonding between the two users.
However, in the case of Elevate, what is the end outcome for a user if he/she maintains the daily streak? Despite having an Achievement tied to this activity called “Streak Specialist”, I feel winning that achievement would hardly make a difference in user’s experience with the App. It doesn’t create a sense of bonding with the App or between the two users, as there’s no reward for maintaining a streak.
In the bigger picture, this feature hardly serves a purpose in increasing user engagement with the App or likeability towards the App, two factors that could raise the potential revenue.
Hence, I feel this feature is pretty useless for Elevate’s audiences and I’d like to remove it.
One of my favorite software products is Quora.
About the Product:
Let me tell you a bit about quora. It is a QnA site in which you can ask questions and someone from the community can answer your questions. It is community driven, so anyone can ask or answer a question. Users can ask personal to general questions and there is an option of A2A in which users can ask a specific person who is supposedly qualified to answer on the topic.
User Personas:
Quora’s user base ranges across all ages, professions and groups. It has a very wide network of people which brings a lot of knowledge onto the platform.
Pain points & how it addresses:
When people are faced with questions in various situations, they approach their friends or search for it online. Quora with it’s wide network of individuals addresses this pain point by being that friend who has answers to all the questions.
Another pain point quora addresses is people’s need for knowledge. Having wide adoption, there are thousands of questions asked and answered in Quora everyday. This makes quora engaging for the users.
Why do I use:
I use quora to find genuine answers. We can get real insights from people e.g. Let’s say if I am planning for a 3 day trip to Kanyakumari, either I can search it in quora and someone would have already asked this question or I myself can post a question like “What is a good 3 day itinerary from Bangalore to Kanyakumari”. I can get answers from users who have really travelled from Bangalore to Kanyakumari and I can do my planning accordingly.
The other point which I like the most about quora is the quality of the questions and answers. Multiple things contribute to this. First is the intelligent moderation by the Quora bots and the staff. Secondly, quora has managed to pull really qualified people on it’s platform. The replies from these qualified people makes the answers more credible and filled with knowledge. I mean, who better than Reed Hastings can tell how much Netflix spends on Postages.
Competitors overview:
There were many other Q&A websites at the time Quora was started e.g. Yahoo answers, Answers.com, Blurtit etc. Yahoo answers was one of the best QnA website before quora. But with the quality of the content, qualified people and its ability to convert itself as a knowledge platform, quora has been able to set itself apart.
What is your favorite? What does it do?
Blinkist is a learning platform that gathers key insights from nonfiction books to read and listen to in an easy-to-digest, 15 minute summary format. Each key insight is called a ‘blink’. It has mobile and desktop experiences.
Who is the user and what do they want to do with the product?
It is designed for those:
Who are struggling to find time to finish non-fiction books; Each book is summarized into key blinks and can be listened to in 15 mins; People can learn about a book while they are driving, taking a break, cooking, or doing laundry.
It is also designed for those who are Feeling overwhelmed by all the books they have collected but never have time to finish. People can find their bookshelf collections, highly recommended bestsellers, and new interesting books on blinkist and learn through them effectively.
Lastly, it is also designed for those who can’t decide which book to read next and continue learning. Blinkist also provides recommendations based on the books you are interested in. After you are done with one book, there are more options at your fingertips and continue to learn.
If you are the user, why do you use it?
And those are my reasons why I love this product. I have a collection of books and barely finds time to finish them all. Blinkist has tailored the key insights with the right amount of details to help me learn and go through my book lists using pocket times. When I am done reading the books, they would recommend more similar options or other categories I am interested in. Then it helps me to continue reading and learning.
Customer: needs & values
What problems is it solving for the user?
In summary,
It takes only 15 mins to read/listen to a book and it can be easily fit into your life. It saves people time.
Blinkist has a wide range of categories and bestseller books, and helps people get through their book collections more efficiently. It provides diversity and can meet different interests.
Blinkist curates good quality content and provides relatable and continuous recommendations. It provides relavent quality content.
Company: Business Model
Is there something about the business model that is essential for the user?
Blinkist functions on the customer subscription model. It starts off with a 7-days free trial with an annual subscription, no free trial on a monthly subscription plan. In order for people to get on subscription plans, it has to provide a sense of belongings for users to commit especially with a yearly subscription after a 7 days trial.
Competitor: How do competitors or alternatives compare?
The user interface is a draw to users that they have redesigned every book cover to be in sync with the minimalism design style of Blinkist. It created the feeling that those content belongs to blinkist and shifts users attention on the quality content, rather than getting distracted by the original cover design of books, compared to its competitor StoryShots.
StoryShots presents book summary contents in all formats as in audio, read and video. But the video quality is low and limited. Books are presented with their original covers rather categorized. It doesn’t present focus to users which can easily distract users.
Currently, Blinkist is promoting a new feature called shortcast as a curated podcast summary on top of the interface. Each shortcast provides key insights of a 40-60min podcast and shortens the summary less than 10 mins. It is a similar idea as blink but a shortcast is a summary for a podcast episode. Compared to its competitor Instaread who provides similar services with a compelling customized user interface design, the audio quality is not as good as Blinkist and they are not seeking innovations and continue to keep their users engaged.
Ways to improve?
Which metrics can be improved (e.g. customer base, retention, conversion, and engagement)?
As Blinkist explores more ways to curate content, their mission is leaning more towards helping people to build continuous reading habits. It’s clear that they are focused on ways how to
engage their users.
Describe use case scenarios.
As a subscribed user, It’s exciting to try new features as they are rolling out shortcasts trying new ways to learn. Since there are more and more podcast content, it will be nice to be provided with a curated podcast and learn. As I listened to the shortcast on how to improve your productivity at work, I was really inspired to share this shortcast with my team and have a discussion around it. But there is not an easy way to share.
What would you change or add to the product to support these use cases and improve the metric?
Blinkist can add “share with your friends' ' feature to allow people to easily share with their friends and teams. As the shortcast is shared out it can not only expand to more users. Meanwhile, blinkist can calculate how many times certain shortcasts are shared, and leverage the popularity to continue promoting on the platform to drive more engagement of that shortcasts.
As the business, with the increasing need of curating content, blinkist can open the platform to more writers who are willing to contribute and get paid with their reward, which will help the platform to ensure the quality of content and encourage more writers to contribute, growing the business into the ecosystem.
Generally, I evaluate product based on three criteria.
1. Usefulness – The product should solve core problems or pain points for the user
2. Efficient – The product should solve the problem quicker and without issues or obstructions
3. Innovative – The product should be innovative and interesting
Apple Health App easily meets all these criteria
Usefulness
Physical activities: It easily syncs with my Mi band and shows me history of my physical activities (Steps taken, stairs climbed, running distance, calories burnt) and heart health.
Sleep Quality: It also monitors my sleep schedule and sleep quality and provides features for maintaining regular undisturbed sleep schedule.
Mindfulness: Innovative integration with third party apps which helps you take a break and relax in today’s fast paced world.
Vitals monitoring: For elderlies and co morbid patients, it provides way to monitor and log their vitals like blood glucose, oxygen and blood pressure.
Efficient
Apple Health app keeps syncing with your devices from time to time and keeps track of your data. I have never seen sync failures with this app till now. If you are using apple watch, the amount of data managed via this app is even higher and continuous without error.
Another advantage of Health app is, there are no ads so you don’t get distracted and you can get all information in one app so you don’t switch between apps.
Innovative
There are two innovative features in the app that I like the most.
1. Mindfulness : Mindfulness allows you to monitor how many mindum minutes you are spending each day for your me time and also helps you to connect to apps which help you with meditation during your mediation session.
2. Hearing health: Apple monitors the sound levels that you are listening to when using your phone or Macbook or airpods pro and warns you if you are listening to music at higher decibel levels for a longer time and helps you maintain overall hearing health.
In summary, I love Apple Health app because it is useful in providing me data about my overall well being at one place, it is efficient and doesn’t distract me from my goal of rbeing healthy and it provides innovative features to make the experience seamless.
If you had to improve one thing in the product, what would that be?
I started using the feature sleep schedule, how that works is, Once you enter your regular sleep schedule in the app, Health app starts winding up your day 45 minutes prior to the scheduled time and suggests you to be mindful and prepare yourself mentally towards a sound sleep. It also disables calls and other notifications during your regular sleep schedule.
This has a problem. I don’t want to block midnight calls from family and close friends as they might just call me for emergencies. There is no way to do that. It would be awesome if the app lets me define a whitelist or letting calls through after certain number of calls from the same number.
This is a deciding factor for me to start using this particular feature again.
My current fav product is Cult fit.
Firstly I will like to explain the product at a high level and its business objective. Second I'll outline the target user and their problems, and thirdly, how the cult fit app has solved the issues better than its competitor and why it is my favourite app.
Before I explain my framework, I would like to clarify how cult fit works.
Product intro:
The Cult fit is a fitness and well-being startup, and the app is one of India's most comprehensive fitness apps. It has four verticals.
- Cult. fit
- Eat. fit
- Care. fit
- Mind. fit
It is the chain of fitness centre across India. Due to covid, they have a scaled-down offline business and quickly innovated the online industry.
Business objective
Cult fit the main goal is the availability of the cult fit studios, a unique workout designed, and their centre social experience. These value propositions have increased customers retention and acquisition. There is a total of 130+ centre across India in the span of 5yrs. During the covid situation, they scaled down the offline business and immediately came up with online live streaming. With the help of ml and AI, they created the energy meter, which tracks the movement virtually.
Target
Specific target audience with the age group of 20 – 40, Urban population and higher income group.
The problem they are trying to solve.
- Lack of time
- Everything at one point
- Professional trainers
- Integrated approach
So as being one of the end-users of the cult fit, let me explain more about the product from that perspective.
Cult fits solve the common problem for users like me.
- Get confused when going to the gym, like where to start.
- Personal trainers are expensive.
- Get bored with one type of exercise.
Solutions
Cult fit solves the common problems of the users better than its competitors.
- There have opened many centres in urban areas which provide ease availability of the studios, and now they have online live streaming.
- Expert trainers and all classes are trainer-led both online and offline
- Wide range of activities.
- Clean centres.
- Well equipped
The user has an endless stream of content, making the user more likely to use and engage in the app. Activities like, once you finished the online exercise, you can share your report with your friends, book a dietician, consult a doctor, there is a workout designed for beginners.
These factors make its value proposition better than its competitors like myfirstfitnesspal, noom and many more.
There are few tradeoffs I would like to do
- Smartwatch sync
- Streaming on lower bandwidth
- Scalability
1) Addressing a problem: Fitness and health are major concerns for most adults, and increasingly, younger populations, especially in developed countries like the US where obesity rates are around 50% or more in some urban areas. Apple watch helps you keep track of your daily fitness levels and incentivizes you to do better through goals for each month and week. Other products like Fitbit do this as well and were pioneers in the space, however, Apple, bringing its broad ecosystem to bear has been a major disrupter because it also helps solve two other problems: communication on the go (through features like walkie-talkie, taking calls on the watch, and messaging).
2) Time efficient: most gestures on the watch take a few seconds, at a glance design patterns ensure most apps are information dense - necessary for small screens. Use of complications to help with user customization is a major plus
3) Innovation: Over time, Apple has innovated in this space by bringing better quality glass (scratch resistant), water-resistant body, cellular features (for a price), and different styles because customers like to customize.
Features I would like on the watch are kid friendliness. Today it works well for adults but does not meet the needs of kids who can be monitored remotely.
Many a times, I tend to forget my dates and I wanted to get rid of remembering the dates. This was the prime reason why I downloaded this app. Maya resolved my issue- I can view my periods length and cycle variations through a simple bar-graph. Also, I can check my menstrual phases in intuitive colour codes.
The 2 key features that delights me are:
1st: Prediction & Reminder- this app not only tracks my cycle but also accurately predict my upcoming cycles and set up calendar reminders before my next period.
2nd: Recurring Symptoms Prediction- I can log my symptoms, cramps, emotions, skin, moods, flow, and more and find patterns in my cycle. Through statistics and history, now I get prepared beforehand- proper diet, exercise, Netflix Subscription helps!
In the recent update, Maya solved 1 more pain point of mine by providing option to set custom cycle reminders, where I can set a reminder for intake of certain diet on day 20-25 of my cycle.
I feel this app is really useful for any women who belongs to menstruating age group. As menstrual cycle can also say a lot about fertility, Maya can help Future mothers, able to predict their ovulation and peak fertility days as well.
The two major competitors are Clue and Period Calendar.
Clue recently added a premium section, though the layout is still the same but it is now full of annoying popping ads. I feel that the simplicity has been lost now.
Sometimes, I face the issue of irregular periods and Period Calendar doesn’t provide me the flexibility to add the same in the free version.
This is the reason why I stick to Maya app.
Although I love the app, I feel there are still some scope of improvements like integrating In-app menstrual health encyclopaedia and educational contents with my period behavioural analysis to provide more personalized contents throughout the month. This feature keeps users like me engaged all the time. Also, they can introduce different themes for teens, expecting mothers and other users to enhance their experience.
My favorite product that I use on a daily basis is a personal money management app called as “MoneyView”. It helps me set a monthly budget and classifies my expenses into various categories and allows me to keep a track of my spends. It allows me to manage my finances efficiently. When I think as to why is MoneyView my favorite product, it boils down to the following points:
MoneyView is successful in solving a long standing problem faced by me i.e. managing and budgeting my expenses and thus improving my personal finance habits. The reason it is so useful is because it tracks all my digital payments by it self through my SMS. Since I mostly use digital payments, I do not have to do much to track my spends and I can simply analyze my spend at the end of the month. The best part is that it categorizes my spend into different categories like Grocery, Fuel, Dining, Entertainment, etc (there are ample categories) and thereby enables me to identify where am I spending more and where do I need to cut down my expenses
As a PM, I always strive to keep my products scale-able and high on performance. This is what increases my products retention. MoneyView constantly scales in terms of categorizes and features it has to offer to make the budgeting as accurate as possible. I have encountered minimal bugs on the platform and the support team is super responsive,in case you need a query answered. The interface of the product is very easy to use which definitely adds on to the performance aspect
MoneyView has often been voted as one of the most useful personal apps. The innovation that it brings on the table to capture and categorize your spends is amazing. In terms of security, it only reads your business SMS (Yes, SMSes are classified as business and personal by the provider) and ensures there is no breach of your personal space. It has also been innovative in terms of monetizing, by offer invest plans on the platform. Hence, it encourages me to save money and then invest the saved money
I generally use the BUS framework to answer this question
My favorite product is CRED
B- Business Objective/Describe the product
CRED is an app that allows users to make credit card payments of multiple card vendors through a single platform in a timely manner. The app helps users store multiple credit card details and get timely reminders on payments, extra charges, offers etc and the USP of the product is that the user gets rewarded with something called as CRED coins for every credit card payment. So a payment of x, results in the user rewarded with x cred coins which can then be used to get cashbacks, purchase products at a discounted price etc on the CRED platform. Additionally CRED has also entered into other financial domains like lending, rent payment, mutual funds etc
If I think of the core business objective of CRED, it remains about "rewarding" Credit worthy/responsible users. In the words of the founder-Kunal Shah, "In India, no one is rewarded for good credit behaviour, and CRED is trying to change that"
U- User Problems
Start with broadly defining some user personas relevant to CRED
U1: Users with 5+ credit cards, use CC for almost every transaction, are very digital in their spending, know about offers etc on CCs. They need a product which can help them keep abreast of diff CC offers, manage their cards, payment reminders, extra charges etc
U2: Have 1 credit card at max and use it occasionally when they get some offers. They just expect a safe usage of the card where they are not faced with unwanted charges or credit card frauds
U3: Have no credit cards, but are eligible based on their credit score. They are hounded by banks trying to sell them credit cards. They need a reliable way of knowing which credit card to get and if it adds any value for them
There are other stakeholders in this business namely Credit card vendors (VISA/Master etc), Banks, PGs & vendors who list their products on the CRED store. However for the sake of this conversation, I will restrict the conversation to End Users
I will consider U1 as the segment to focus on, since it is clearly CRED's most valuable and engaged user base as far as relevancy with their product is concerned. What helps is I myself belong to this group and therefore can connect better
Some major user problems associated with U1 are
- Managing payment dates for multiple cards
- Understanding your credit card statement
- Making payments separately on each card/bank website whilst entering the CC details everytime for each card
- Missing on extra charges like annual fees/late payment fees/interest payment etc
- Credit card frauds
- Not knowing what benefits my card entitles me to, this could be miles or lounge visits or discounts on specific brands
- Despite being a very heavy user of CCs and contributing to larger revenues for CC companies, I am treated at par with a user who probably has just one CC and makes the occasional late payment
S- Solutions/summary
Here the focus needs to be on how CRED solves the problems I listed above and why it does a better job than competition
Some credible competition to CRED (in the credit card managing business) are
- Paytm
- PhonePe
- Amazon Pay
If we consider other businesses of CRED like Rent payment/Lending business etc, then competition increases to include
- Rent Giraffe
- No Broker Pay
- Banks
User Problems | CRED Solutions | Competition |
Managing payment dates | Constant notifications on app, whatsapp notifications, reminders start from D-15 and go upto D0 | Mostly restricted to in app notifications |
Understanding your CC | One platform to view all your cards, access their data, look through the statements, understand them better with simple categorisation of spends, thus avoaiding the complex jargons or structures of most CC statements | A simpler statement structure than the ones banks provide, but not as good as CRED |
Make Payments | One click payment options with multiple paymodes-UPI, DB, NB etc | Competition does equally well |
Extra Charges | CRED immediately flags any unwanted charges for each CC, as soon as the statement is generated | NA |
CC frauds | NA | NA |
Card benefits | Does a decent job of letting users know what possible benefits a particular card entitles the user to. However there is no easy way to use these benefits or redeem the card points directly from CRED | NA |
Rewarding customers | CRED coins can be used to buy different products from the CRED Store/commerce platform. Coins can also be redemmed for instant cashbacks. The other businesses of CRED like rent payment, lending (lower than market rates) etc can also be looked as an extension of this philosophy of "rewarding" customers with lower rates or better benefits which other users are not entitled to | Some occasional cashbacks |
Given how flawlessly CRED solves core user problems and does a far better job and existing competition, this makes it my favorite product
An extension of this question is generally "How would you improve it". In the above table, the two user problems- CC Frauds & Card Benefits come out as potential problems but CRED either has a half baked solution to it or none at all. These can thus be used as potential leads to expand on how you can inprove CRED.
A simple answer would be to provide a means to convert Card points (bank given) to equivalent CRED coins or to provide a way to use those points directly on the CRED platform
- Uber is my favourite app as it revolutionized the way users commute
- It is very efficient in connecting the commuters to drivers and also tells the price upfront for users to be able to make an easy decision. It also takes care of the safety aspects by giving provision to share the ride.
- Having the provision to allow multiple stops while riding gives an ease to users to travel with friends
Primarily there are two personas:
- Commuters
- Drivers
Business goal – increase user engagement measured as number of rides booked by the user and revenue
Ways to improve the application:-
- User engagement increase:-
o Ability to mark a driver as favorites will increase safety and reliability for both commuters and drivers as user has already connected with the driver. Driver will also be able to reach faster as they know the address and the routes.
o Allow users to book recurring rides against a route at a particular time against the same cab or different cab. This will not only reduce wait time for a user but also increase the number of rides by user.
- Revenue:
o Add premium charges for wait time in the middle of the rides. This will not only be convenient to user but also give more rides to drivers.
o Deliver groceries – drivers can also be used to deliver groceries as groceries can be delivered any time during the day in the intermediate times when the vehicle is idle. This will give additional source of income to drivers as well.
Success Metrics
Feature | Effort | Value |
Mark favourites | Medium | High |
Recurring rides | Low | Medium |
Premium Charges | Medium | High |
Deliver Groceries | High | Medium |
Based on above analysis, I will prioritize in following order:-
1. Mark Favourites
2. Premium Charges
3. Recurring rides
4. Delivering groceries
Out of the 26 answers to date, I see only a couple who have chosen a physical product. Hence, I intentionally chose a physical product that I love. If it was a digital app it would have been What's app where there is an answer below. Please let me know your thoughts.
Me: Sure. Is there a preference between a digital product such as apps vs a physical product? Interviewer: Your choice
Me: Before I dive in, could I take a couple of minutes in defining a structure for this? Interviewer: Yes. Me: This would be my approach to share my favorite product
1. Introduce the product, and provide an overview of its functionalities and the users/personas
2. Share 3 things that WoW in the product and what problem it solved for me
3. Talk about the user journey/business model that is unique to this product (Not applicable to this answer)
4. I shall also share what are the alternatives/competition and why those are not preferred
5. Improvements that I want on the product
6. How to measure / metrics the improvements
My favorite product is Instant Pot. Instant Pot is an electric pressure cooker. It also acts as a pan supporting different styles of cooking with pre-set modes. When it was launched the target segment was households that are working, but want to carry healthy lunch to work. Currently, it is used across almost all kitchens spanning users across the age from 20 to 80s for regular day-day use.
Three things that WoW in the product
1. Reduced Cook time compared to traditional alternatives
2. An ecosystem/community that is vibrant sharing recipes, tips, etc.
3. Lesser energy consumption
In particular, things that made me fall in love are
1. Ability to set a timer for when the cooking needs to start.- Before I got Instant pot I used to either cook my lunch for work either the previous day and keep it in the refrigerator or get up early in the morning and cook. Both of them were not great, since it was not fresh and took away my precious sleep time :-)
2. Single pan / Cooker to support different styles of cooking- It is a single thing in the kitchen with which I could cook pasta, soup, and even Indian sweets. So less clutter.
3. Just to add to it, coming from the southern part of India, Yogurt or curd is my staple diet. I like to make my own Yogurt at home. Before Instant Pot, a perfect Yogurt was often a hit or miss based on ambient temperature, etc. The built-in Yogurt mode in Instant Pot guarantees success. You can see why I love Instant Pot or is a perfect Salesperson for it. Any questions you have?
Interviewer: Good, could you talk about the competition
Me: This is a perfect segway to talk about alternatives and competition.
The alternatives to Instant Pot can be grouped into three buckets
- Traditional pressure cooker: This requires attention, your presence, and more time to cook
- Old style electric Rice cookers: They are good just for rice, but fail to cook grains and does not provide options for multiple styles of cooking
- New age Instant Pot competitors: Recently for the past couple of years, they are new competitors that have similar technology to InstantPot. Most often those choices are very expensive- almost double when compared to InstantPot and have very little differentiation. Also, it does not have a community like Instant Pot where I could go learn recipes and tips from real people
Hence Instant Pot for me continues to be the #1 thing in my kitchen. Hope that addresses your question
Interviewer: Yes
Me: With that said, I also have few improvements that would make InstantPot even better.
- Currently, it is bulky. It is difficult and heavy if you have to move it from the shelf to the counter to cook. For instance, my mom at times needs help in moving it up to the counter. So it would be good if it is lightweight.
- Related to bulky- Due to my dietary restrictions, I often have to cook at places where I travel. I have tried carrying Instant Pot, and it is no easy and is exposed to breakage. It would be ideal if it can be disassembled into smaller parts and easy to carry. Another potential business model that can be explored is to sell InstantPot to long-stay apartments, hotels and this could be marketed as a differentiator by the hotel chains.
- Cleaning- Although the lid and insert are detachable and can be cleaned, it is often difficult to clean the corners where you could drop food. Making areas easily accessible will help for a clean and safe cooking
- Finally aesthetics- The silver black is kind of becoming old, they could provide alternatives to it. For example, they could be bold and provide the iMac kind of look and feel allowing us to see the internals of how the food is getting cooked.
- Others include voice enablement (or linking to Alexa, google home), app-based controls (i believe it is available now)
I will also quickly touch on a couple of metrics on measuring these improvements. I believe I may be a small user segment for a few of those suggestions, but nevertheless
- Launch in a particular location, a new set of designs like floral, see-through, etc. and measure success on the number of sales against the traditional model
- Work with few boutique hotels to see how often guest uses instant pot before expanding it to larger hotel chains
Is there anything more that you would want me to address?
What is Linked-in? - It is a platform for professionals to connect with each other and help them accelerate their career.
Why is it my favourite app? -
-Innovative: It revolutioned the professional industry by giving a single way for professionals to share about their career and achievements as well as connect to grow their networks. And network is immenselt helpful in achieving their vision.
- Efficient: It gave Recuriters a mechanism to post the open positions and search for the interested talents across via 'Open for recruiters' flag and also help professionals apply to a job easily via linked in
- Useful: It gives a way for professionals to learn via various groups like 'Product School' and follow different companies or industry leaders.
What linked-in could improve:
- It's becoming more of social networking than professional networking. Improving notifications or controlling the posts which are non-professional to be removed from the board if flagged.
- connect that job seekers to professional coaching via premium membership to increase revenue as well as improve user engagement.
I would love to discuss my favorite product. If you are comfortable with it, I would like to discuss a product that combines both software and hardware. Before we jump in, here is a high-level structure of my answer
- I will give you an overview of the product, talk about how it is used and some key features of the product
- Provide the criteria that I use in evaluating products
- Explain how this product fits these criteria
- Bring it together, and maybe we discuss some of the opportunities ahead for this product.
Overview of the product:
My favorite product is Amazon Echo plus; it belongs to the smart home or smart speaker category and one of the early entrants to this category. A quick description of Echo Plus is a cylindrical speaker capable of handling complex voice commands. It can run voice commands and play music and has an inbuilt Zigbee hub that controls other smart devices in the household. A quick note on Zigbee it is a communication protocol that works on short-range and low-frequency communication. That was a short description of the product's hardware side and the software side, which is a combination of Alexa app and Alexa assistance AI. The app allows you to control settings for the Echo Plus, set up profiles, and set routines for controlling other smart devices in the household.
Criteria:
When I evaluate any product, I look at three things
- How useful is the product?
- Is the product innovative? What I am looking for is how the product sets itself apart from the competition
- Ease of use of the product
With the criteria defined, let's jump into looking at how this product fits each of the criteria.
To me, the usefulness of the product becomes clear when not just the line between technology and UX/CX blurs but rather disappears. For example, whenever we try to look for some information, we say "just google it," not go use a search engine (technology) to find the information. In this case, Google as a product or technology has made the line between technology and experience disappear. Amazon's Echo Plus has done something similar, and it has embedded itself in our life - a simple task for pre-covid of getting groceries has become complicated. We wanted to reduce our visits to the store and limit our exposure to the virus. Using Echo plus voice commands, we have started creating a grocery list on the device, and every time we remember something, we add it to the list without picking up a phone or pen/paper. With us being prime members, now we don't even have to go to the store. Once our list is complete, we just order it via the echo plus. With both my partner and me working, Echo plus has also become our nanny - we use Echo plus to tell our kids stories and even give them quizzes, making it integral part of our life, and to an extent similar to Google, it has made the line between technology and experience disappear.
Moving on to innovation, great products either win by differentiating themselves via features or are cost leaders in their space. I think we can say both for Echo plus, it is not only one of the cheapest smart speaker out there, but it differentiates itself from its competitors on multiple features and capabilities. The most significant advantage that Echo plus has its ease of access to Amazon's massive echo system, some of these I discussed in the product section's usefulness. Having tons of integration with third-party applications also helps in differentiating itself from other smart speakers. Where Echo plus truly shines is by having Zigbee or having a smart-hub that allows me as customer to automate things in my house. If I have smart-bulbs, smart-locks, and cameras, I can control them using Echo Plus and using the app. I can set routines that help save electricity and make it look like somebody is at home while we are on vacation. An added benefit to the customer is that the device help saves time; Automating different routines saves the customer from manually doing those things or worrying about them.
Moving onto our last but not least criteria, easy of use. An often overlooked aspect of a product is how easy it is to use. Software products such as apps or even hardware products like a smart speaker can quickly lose their value proposition in the customer's eyes if they fail on the first impression, i.e., the on-boarding phase. Echo plus does a great job on ease of use; nothing can beat voice commands. Right of the bat, Echo plus gives the user a simple and self-guided experience - once you take it out of the box, all you have to do is plug it in, and it will guide you through the setup. I can claim that it has successfully passed a six years old test. I have two of these devices, and for the second one, I gave it to my six-year-old to set up, who has just started reading and did set up the device without any hiccups. To me, on-boarding the most critical step and any product that fails the customer at this step will never be able to deliver the value prop that the customer expects from the product.
Opportunities:
There are some areas of improvement or opportunities for this product. Especially around privacy and security
- Zigbee is not a secure protocol, and there have been incidents where someone hacked into the device and got control of other smart devices in the household. Maybe move to a more secure protocol.
- Echo plus does provide convenience, but it should not feel like invading the user's privacy, and maybe having the capability to purge all our voice commands or recordings would help. Having a unique command to stop listening for a short period would also help if the family or customer is having a sensitive conversation with someone.
- This one is a bit personal, and I learned it the hard way. The device should not allow kids to order or subscribe to various services offered on the device. I finally figured out how to solve this, but it is a "smart" device and should recognize the voice of a minor and prevent them from ordering or at least require confirmation via the app or email before finalizing the purchase.
It's my first time trying to answer a product manager interview question, would really appreciate some feedback!

My favourite product is the Binance app. Before I evaluate why I like this product, let me give a brief about what this application does.
It is a cryptocurrency trading platform, where you can buy/sell cryptocurrencies like Bitcoin, Ethereum, Ripple and around 800 other coins. It is one of the first exchanges to enable people to invest in a new asset class and diversify their portfolio. You can deposit fiat currencies(USD, INR, JPY, etc.) on the platform and you can use it to buy crypto(short for cryptocurrencies). The application has consistently hit a daily average volume of 10 billion USD, so there is decent enough liquidity to trade the coins.
I would like to use the following three parameters to evaluate why I like this product :
1) Innovation
2) Ease of use
3) Usefulness
Innovation - Blockchain is the backbone of crypto currencies. It removes the need of a middleman. Allowing trading of crypto currencies is indeed innovative. This is akin to creation of a platform where you can trade an entirely new asset class, with potential great returns. It provides a new investment opportunity, moving away from the traditional stocks, bonds and forex markets. For a seasoned trader, Binance also provides futures/options trading of crypto. Thus, I give Binance a high innovation rating
Ease of use - The platform is fairly intuitive and easy to use. However, a person who is not into tech might find it difficult at the beginning to understand all the jargons and start trading. To solve this problem, Binance created an entirely new platform, Binance Academy, which can be accessed by a quick Google search. Everything you need to learn about blockchain, trading, cryptocurrencies, you will find it there. It's indeed an exhaustive resource to get you started quickly. Also, they run a separate YouTube channel where they explain in detail how to get started with trading on cryptocurrencies. So, although the initial few days will require some learning, the application is fairly easy to use and intuitive when you use it a couple of times.
I give them a high rating on this because they have put in a lot of efforts in making it easy for people to access the information that they will need to get started
Usefulness - The app is indeed useful because it enables us to invest in a new asset class altogether, grow our wealth, and diversify our investment portfolio. To give an example, in the year 2017, Ripple cryptocurrency(known as XRP) gave a staggering 37000% returns to its investors in a single year. The crypto markets are highly volatile, I agree, but there is ample of opportunity to invest in something new and get great returns. Thus, it scores a very high rating on the usefulness scale for me.
Having said all of the above things, I would also like to point out a few pain points about their platform and what they can do to resolve those pain points -
1) Not enough liquidity while trading certain coins - There are many coins on the platform where the liquidity is extremely low. Liquidity is a measure of how easy it is to trade a coin. If there are many people willing to buy/sell a coin, we say that there is good liquidity and we can trade our coins easily. But for certain coins, this is not the case. The liquidity is low for them and hence it gets difficult to trade those coins.
This can be primarily attributed to the fact that not enough people are there on the platform to give higher liquidity on the app. There aren't enough people because many aren't aware of the investment opportunities in cryptocurrencies.
Binance can solve this by bringing in other asset class to its platform that people are familiar with. One such thing is bringing in stocks of listed companies like Tesla, Apple, etc. How will Binance bring stocks on its platform? In tokenized form! Blockchain allows tokenization of any asset you can think of. If Binance is able to offer tokenized assets of familiar things, that will certainly drive user growth to its platform and, in turn, will result in people wanting to invest in cryptocurrencies. Thus increasing the overall liquidity of the platform
2) Quality of certain coins is a big concern - By quality of a coin I mean the quality of the project which created that coin. There have been many instances when a low-quality project got listed on Binance and the people running the project did an exit scam. When the price of the coins increased, the founder of the project sold off his stash of coins and closed the project and ran away. This resulted in monetary loss to many people
To tackle such a problem, Binance would need to put in stringent project listing policies. A thorough background check and code review of the project also needs to be carried by Binance before they list it on its platform
3) Accessing past trade history is a big pain - As an investor or a trader, I would certainly want to be able to see the list of all my past trades. In the Binance app, we do have this feature of seeing our past trades, but that is located deep inside the app somewhere and is difficult to find.
They can put it at a more convenient place, like directly in a separate tab in the app which can be accessed in not more than 1-2 clicks. This will definitely enhance the user experience
My favorite Product is Paytm. It has simplified the payment and become one stop solution for all payment needs now a days. It brough disruptive innovation in payment.
Further I will be explaining why Paytm is my favorite in terms of usefulness, efficient and innovation
1. Useful
Paytm has changed the payment mechanism completely. As a user, I can walk into without my may wallet and go for any shopping. It is most useful for small payment like milk, vegetables and Tea/Coffee shop payment. It is solving following pain points for users:
- No issues of change (small denomination of money), specifically for small amount of shopping
- With its wide presence user can walk without physical wallet. This also makes it One stop solution for all payment needs
- Bill Payment like electricity recharge within few seconds by sitting at home
- Peer to Peer money transfer without any KYC process. Most useful for sharing contribution amount for any gift/party other small occasion
- For merchants, it is very useful as there is no need of internet connection for payment unlike payment through POS terminals
2. Efficient
- Instant money transfer through QR code or phone number
- Integrated with all merchants from small shops like vegetable vendors to big stores
- Easy onboarding and Easy to use. Senior citizen users can easily onboard and learn how to payment
3. Innovation
- Paytm brought disruptive innovation the way payment happened in India
- Merchants can take payment without internet connection
- Paytm is bring innovative solution continuously, latest example is Voice activated point of sale speaker. The speaker (Paytm Soundbox) announces the incoming payment that closes the deal for both the buyer and the seller, using voice. No need to wait for SMS confirmation: Whenever a customer makes a payment via Paytm at your store, the SoundBox will alert and notify you that the payment is completed successfully
As Paytm becoming one stop solution for all payment needs so I can think about following improvements
1. Improving home page UX
Paytm home page is very cluttered which makes user difficult to use it. Although it is a change of UX only but brings lots of value for the usage of the feature. In terms of KPI, improving home page will increase customer engagement and reduce churn to other similar products like Google Pay. Following are some of the examples to improve this:
- For repayment to the same merchant, recent transactions are not appearing on the home page
- Scan any QR and Pay seems duplicate option for same feature and adding space on home page
- Too Many options distracting user to find the daily use features
2. Spend Analysis
- As a user I would like to see my spending pattern with several visualization like weekly/monthly expenditure
- Options like set spend limit can be provided, which will help user to set spending goal
- In terms of benefits and KPI, this will motivate to the users to do all payments through this app only to track their expenses, so usage of the product will increase
3. Saving
- Auto saving feature can be provided to save money by automatically deducting some amount from each transaction (5-10%) and directly deposit that amount in the paytm wallet. This will motivate the user for saving

- In terms of benefits and KPI, this will motivate to the users to do more payments with paytm, usage of paytm wallet will also increase which will increase the revenue
4. Budget
- Monthly budget can be created based on individual spending. Every transaction can be categorized in various types and accordingly budget for restaurants, groceries, transport etc. can be created that will help user to manage the finance
- KPI to measure, user engagement and increase in use of payment features
My favourite product is curefit. cure.fit is a health and fitness powerhouse that takes a holistic approach to physical and mental well being. At cure.fit, they make group workouts fun, daily food healthy & tasty, mental fitness easy with yoga & meditation, and medical & lifestyle care hassle-free.
I will breakdown the reasoning behind selecting as favourite product in three buckets:
1. Usefulness : When the lockdown happened, all the people were forced to adopt an unhealthy lifestyle without proper exercise, which they use to do in parks, yoga-studios or gyms. Cure.fit provided world class fitness trainers at the comfort of your home. The live classes from the best trainers around the globe made this app a pain-killer for the fitness freaks.
2. Efficient : It keeps a track of the sessions you did and prepares a weekly report.
3. Innovation : They had energy meter tracking, which helps the user get a score at end of class, to see what was their relative performance. At the end of the class, the user takes a pose for the day from the devise, which acts as an investment in the habit forming loop.
They follow the hook model perfectly in order to make the app habit forming for the fitness freaks
1. Triggers : They send customized triggers, when someone in your squad enters a session you get a notification
2. Action : Attending class using the cure.fit was the only option left for many fitness freaks since the no gyms and yoga-studios were open in lockdown
3. Variable Reward : Getting a new trainer every day is a variable reward in itself.
4. Investment : At the end the user needs to click pose of the day, which acts as an investment on the platform, as user will be making repository of his/her daily poses
A different approach than the Lewis Lin framework of useful, easy to use, innovative :)

My favorite product is Duolingo, which is a language learning application. It's my favorite product because it solves an important, universal problem much better than its competitors.
First, I’ll give a brief overview of what the product does and its business objective. Then, I’ll outline the target users and what problems they have. And finally, I’ll explain how the product solves those problems better than competitors and why that makes it my favorite product.
Beginning with the product overview, Duolingo is a B2C mobile and web application whose mission is to teach users a new language via daily, gamified exercises. Duolingo offers a skill tree of lessons that uses listening exercises, flashcards, and multiple choice questions to drill you on new vocabulary and phrases. The service also has community features that let users connect with others who are learning the same language.
From a business model perspective, the company uses a freemium model. Users can choose between a free, ad-supported plan, or upgrade to a paid plan that removes ads and enables lesson downloads for offline use. Further monetization opportunities are through in-app game purchases, and additional testing verticals.
Now that we understand what the product does, let’s think about Duolingo’s target users, whom Duolingo describes them as ‘everyone’. Think about it… almost everyone you know that’s maybe over the age of 10 has tried to learn a language at one point or another in their life. So given this is an offering that services a pretty broad user base, let’s think about what are the core pain points around learning a new language.
Pain Points:
- Cost / Lack of opportunity — Many people cannot learn a new language because they cannot afford it.
- Lack of time — Many folks feel they are too busy to spend an hour and a half going through a lesson.
- Fear of failure — Many people are afraid of failing or looking ‘dumb’ in front of others trying to pronounce a new word.
Now, let’s think about how Duolingo solves these problems and does so better than the competition.
- Cost — Duolingo completely removes this barrier through its freemium approach to language education. When it came on the seen, it’s competitor was largely Rosetta Stone or in person classes which are very costly. Their approach democratizes access to this type of education.
- Lack of time — Duolingo does a great job of tackling this. By breaking curriculum into small, bite-sized chunks, users can make progress in 5 minutes or less, finding small pockets of time throughout the day. This contrasts to traditional alternatives, which require larger chunks of time (eg 1 hour +) to get through the material.
- Fear of Failure — The privacy afforded by their model — that you can self-pace and practice in the comfort of your own home — serves to relieve this fear. Users may feel more comfortable practicing words out loud.
To summarize, Duolingo is a great product because it solves an important, universal problem in some innovative ways, and it does so better than its competitors. For this reason, I believe it's the best product in its category.
My favorite product is Medium App.
I think Medium has revolutionised the way people read and write on various topics.
I can primarily think of the below User groups:
1. The Avid Blog Reader
2. Blog Reader who reads once in a while.
3. The Avid Writer
4. Someone who writes once every while
That is there is the Reader Side and the Writer side.
Lets see how Medium has benefitted both.
Reader Side
It has made Blog reading fun from a rather tedious activity. Even those who are not habitual blog readers enjoy on Medium.
Medium solved the following problems for the reader:
1. Discoverability
How to discover the best writers' blogs? How to see what is trending and people are engaging with?
Medium allows a search suggestion and allows us to follow the writers' or their pages.
It also allows us to see what is trending on Suggested Blogs section on my Medium Home Page
2. Personalisation
How to find blogs suited to my interest?
Medium solved this by knowing about the user's interests and also suggesting blogs using its algorithm which recommends similar blogs as to what the user engages with.
Its almost as if Medium know what i want to read!
Writer Side
Medium solved the below problem for the Writers of Blogs.
1. Ease of Use
Never was writing and posting a blog simpler than before. We can add images, text, videos, GIFs etc at a few clicks. Huge improvement over the Wordpress days.
2. Sharing
As a writer a big motivating factor is the fact that people will read your blogs.
Medium allows to share the blogs to your network and also to Medium's feed. When people react to the post, it pushes it ahead in Medium's recommendation algorithm.
Also, people can discover by the keywords which you tag the blog against.
To sum it up, we can evaluate Medium on parameters of Innovation, Usefuleness and Honesty.
Innovation: Blogging is not new. However, by making the entire process simpler and easy to Use, Medium does well on Innovation front.
Also it Recommendation Algorithm is an innovation in this segment
Usefulness: Medium is super useful. One can visit Medium for a topic one is researching on and is sure to find blogs there. Also, as a habitual user, it increases one's knowledge and state of knowledge in fields one has opted for.
Honesty: The product does not validate what users have written. However, as it is a public platform in which only quality and genuine content trends, the incentives to write otherwise are low.
Moreover, there is the option to report every story for any inaccuracies.
However, there is scope for improvement.
One such is in optimising Medium for Search engines. I rarely find a Medium article as a top result in Searches. Using SEO for the same may be a good idea.
Other is audio/video blogs. World moved from hard copy of books to ebooks to now audio books. As the next generation of user finds itself less on time, it will move to time saving products across categories.
Hence, audio/video blogs may not be a bad idea after all.
Twitter's objective is to create a microblogging and social network site which enables users to share their ideas or information quickly and network by their quality of thinking and writing. Twitter’s USP is in its format which is a 140 characters limited crisp post called ‘tweet’. It makes it easy for users to type the information quickly and broadcast to their followers network. It is predominantly used as an information network than a Social network. Any news or information can be found on twitter before it is published by any news agencies. It has therefore become the mouthpiece of any celebrities and politicians like Donald Trump and Narendra Modi.
As a social network, it helps people to find like minded people and form networks judging by the quality of their thinking or writing, instead of showing of the certifications or degrees like linkedin. For people with ideas to share, the character limit forces them to give their best in writing short and impactful tweets making it easy and interesting for the readers. It enables followers to consume it during their short breaks between work or while commuting compared to quora which usually has long detailed posts.
Twitter has 3 user personas:
1.Influencers: These are users with blue tick marks who could be celebrities in their corresponding fields ex: Bill Gates or Donald Trump or RGV. There are also twitter celebrities who have hundred of thousand of followers who use this medium to influence people by sharing their writing. Before twitter, the only way for people to broadcast information to society was through traditional new media like TV, Press or radio. Other social networks were only supporting personal networking with their friends or acquaintance and blogs had no mass reach. Twitter solved it with their ‘follow’ option where any number of people can follow and interact with anyone through tweets. This empowered celebrities and influencers to directly connect with their audience and the audience to follow and interact closely with their favorite actors, writers or politicians.
2. Regular users: Users who follow the influencers, their friends and family with followers in hundred who are predominantly content consumers. They would like to follow their favorite celebrities or pages based on their interests and participate in live Q&A, start discussions over a tweet they come cross or the topic trending topic in their city or country. Apart from the opportunity to connect with the celebrities as mentioned earlier, it help to find information on any topic using the hashtags. Hashtag enables users to look for the latest hot trends in their locality, get information from real people instead of traditional media, understand opinions of different people on a topic in the reach of fingertips. Without twitter, users can google search a topic which would only retrieve few links from traditional media or blogs. Twitter gives more information than any traditional media combined with other people’s opinion on the topic
3. Business accounts: Accounts representing a firm which are created to connect with their existing or potential customers. Their goal is to acquire new customers through content marketing, Ads and customer engagement. They can also take feedback from customers and solve any grievances. Having an active twitter account which quickly addresses the user complaints is seen as a great customer service for brands, government departments and politicians.
Twitter has also been the most ethical and socially responsible social network of all the existing popular networking sites. They have recently introduced functionality to issue warning on content which insights or promotes violence and have even flagged tweets by Donald Trump with it without discriminating.
To summarize, Twitter is my favorite product which helps me to share ideas, find quality and reliable information quickly, network with like minded people based on my interests and connect with my favorite personalities.
Note: I didn't cover improvements part as it opens up new set of questions and framework to answer
The goal of the website is to have questions answered for users and it accomplishes these goals by having them answered by industry experts where other users can upvote or downvote an answer based on how useful the answer is.
Solving specific questions is not the only fun part, It is basically a site that enables learning different fields for me. One night I am reading about data structures and the other about black holes and outer space! And both the topics are equally interesting to me. I think there are very few sites in the market that connect learning and fun in a way that quora does.
The only major drawback in my opinion is the layout of answers on the screen. Quora does not currently show the most upvoted answer on top for certain questions. This makes it difficult for the seeker to search for relevant information sometimes.
Uber is a ride sharing service which lets book a cab to travel from one place to another. I use on a daily basis to commute to work.
Uber is super convenient for me as I have the flexibility of leaving at any time and not rely on public transport too much.
Users
- People who commute
- People visiting a new city
- People who can’t drive
- Others
Their main pain-points were around finding a means of transport to travel from one place to another. Often cabs or autos charge randomly where as public transport is not always available at all places and is often overcrowded.
Before UBER, people used to rely on public transport. The timings are not always suitable hence that option is not very flexible. Other Cab drivers and autowalas charge random amounts. There is no consistency in pricing. Usually very expensive in big cities. Moreover public transport buses and metros etc are often super crowded. Often people have to travel the first mile or last mile to and from the metro station or auto stands or taxi stands from their homes or workplaces. So it is not always convenient.
Uber solves these painpoints very well.
- With Uber, you can book a cab anytime depending on availability even in places where there are no taxi or cab stands- it will come to pick you up at the exact location and drop you at your destination. You don’t have to walk too much.
- With Uber, you can see exactly how much will be charged for the cab, how much wait time is there and how much time it will take to reach the destination.
- You can also share your ride details with relatives and friends for your own safety.
- Another advantage is you do not have to pay by cash you can simply add a card and payments are auto deducted - specially in a covid scenario it is important to have minimum or zero contact.
Why Uber is better than other options?
Uber is a much more safer option than other ride share or bike rental options - Bounce or Vogo or Rapido since bikes are less safe compared to cars. Plus Vogo or Bounce require a license plus helmet to really ride those rental bikes.
Public transport options are often very crowded and private cabs and autos often charge too much.
How I would improve Uber?
Often for people who commute on a daily basis
- cabs are not available due to higher demand on certain days in those specific locations. But cabs are available in other regions of the city. There are often higher cancellations or high wait time.
Solution : -
Uber can track the daily departure time of users and often trigger notifications few hours before to the users so that people are arrange for alternate means of transport.
Also another way to solve this painpoint, Uber can start a ride assurance program where customer can pay a premium on a monthly basis or on a per ride basis. As part of this program,
- Uber can ask for work and home locations as well as daily times to reach office and to leave office. Based on that Uber would automatically make a cab available with minimal time at the right time based on traffic conditions to make sure you reach on time or leave the office on time and get a cab immediately.
- The drivers cannot cancel the cabs booked via ride assurance program as they will be incentivised for this and fined heavily if they cancel so that cab availability increases significantly.
How to Measure Success for improvements : -
Average wait time for standard users during peak hours (as they should not be impacted by the ride assurance program)
Average wait time for users under ride assurance program during peak hours
Number of cancellations for bookings under the ride assurance program
**Note - Posting my first ever answer on this platform and expecting feedback and comments from you all. This will surely help me in improving my skills and confidence.
Question - What is your favorite product and why?
Before answering this question, let me explain what a good product means to me.
According to me a good product is something which solves user problems easily yet effectively, which is easy to understand, use and most importantly solve some of his serious problems. A good product can be a hardware product, software product, mobile application, service product etc. Here I will be taking about mobile application product.
There are alot of great products out there but I will choose Google pay as my favorite product in mobile applications. To start my answer first, I’ll explain what google pay does at a high level. Second, I’ll outline the target users and their problems. And finally, I’ll explain how it solves these problems better than others and makes it my favorite product.
About Google pay - Gpay is a UPI platform developed by google which helps in instantly transferring the funds between the two bank accounts without any additional cost through a mobile platform and internet.
Users of Google pay - Since Gpay is a payments app so it is used majorly by individuals and business owners to transect money with others.
End users - Google Pay is used by individuals to send money to their friends, family, recharge mobile, or pay the neighbourhood chaiwala.
G-Pay for business - You’re a small business owner or a manager at a corporation, Google Pay makes it easy to accept payments and connect with customers.
User pain points in transferring money
Time consuming - It takes a lot of time to get the money transferred from one account to another. Money transferring is not instant.
Complex process of adding beneficiaries before transferring money
Additional changes and taxes on transferring money - IMPS/RTGS charges
Limit on maximum amount to be transferred in one day.
Either requires net/mobile banking or visiting a bank branch to transfer the money
Sender requires lot of bank details of the receiver before transferring money. Such as account number, IFSC code, account holder name, accout type etc.
Complicated KYC process
How google pay solves the user problem better than others?
Excellent Design and user experience - Simple and fresh design of mobile application keeps it ahead of other platforms.
Easy to use - Google pay is extremely easy to start with and understand. User flows are quite simple. Paying money through Google pay is as easy as we pay via cash.
Instant and free - Money transfer is instant and free. We can send money instantly to our friends, family members or someone who is in our contact list. We do not require much of their account information. Mobile number is sufficient enough to send/receive money.
Secure - Security is the most important aspect of the payment apps as user money is involved in each transaction. Google's backhand security and encryption can't be questioned. Google-pay comes with the highest level of security and encryption mechanism making it a safe platform for users to transact.
Trust of Google - This platform gets an edge over other UPI apps because we have got trust and brand of google.
Performance - Performance of the product is very high. Money and recharges get successfully completed in a fraction of time. However google-pay interacts with other banking applications and systems, authentication layers but transections are quite smooth and fast.
Innovation - Innovative features like scratch cards, swipe to pay/receive money, innovative games to enhance user engagement etc
Basket of important features - Apart from fund transfers, users can recharge phones, pay various bills, set reminders to payments etc makes it one stop solution for payment needs.
Great rewards programme - Google pay offers a best in segment rewards programme. Cash backs, scratch cards, rewards directly getting credited into bank accounts, great referral benefits.
Wide presence - Google pay is a leading UPI platform in India and widely accepted. It helps accuring new users easily
Suggestions for improvement -
Improve success rate - Sometimes while transecting on google pay, we get errors and payment is not successful. We should work around it to make success rate close to 100%
Integrations with split billing apps like Splitwise - Settling splitwise balances through google pay can be a good idea as it will make bill settlements easy, convenient and fast.
Improve google pay for business use case - Google pay is widely used by individuals to send/receive money to/from their friends and relatives. Google pay business use case has a lot of growth potential. Google pay’s scan to pay utility is not yet that popular among customers. This will help in PM Modi’s vision on Cashless India.
To summarize, Google-pay is my favorite application as it is useful, easy, popular and innovative. Due to this this app has seen a tremendous growth in recent years.
This is one of the more commonly used questions in PM interviews, and very likely you will receive it as some stage. The good news is, however, that preparing for this question in advance will make it go a lot smoother.
For this example we are going to choose Spotify. It’s something that is universally known, has evolved over time and has had a healthy amount of feature development and general improvements. Additionally, it has competitors in the market, so discussion around strategy is something that can be brought up in the discussion.
I use Spotify frequently in my day-to-day life. Outside of being a regular user, I am also excited about the problems they are solving in terms of connecting their members & users to new and interesting music (Mission). As they operate in a relatively crowded space, where the access to a large catalog of music is ubiquitous, they have doubled down on two areas: discovery through social connections (Strategic Theme), as well as machine learning and personalized playlists (Strategic Theme) to move the needle on discovery. I would suspect that a key metric to measure the discovery goal is the number of unique artists per user (North Star Metric).
What I like about Spotify is that it solves an important pain point for me. As a user, my use case for a music streaming service is that I will be using it primarily during working hours, and using it for several hours at least each day (Persona). I don’t want to have to select music actively each time a new song comes on; I need to have a stream of regularly new music in the same genre that helps me do focused work (Pain Point). What feature I like that helps with this is the Discover Weekly feature, where based on my previous listening history, I get a fresh playlist of new songs every week, which gives me new songs that are within my musical tastes profile. As far as improving on Spotify, I would explore doubling down on the Discover Weekly feature. One thing I would like to do with the Discover Weekly feature is the ability to share the playlist with colleagues, or vice versa (Pain Point). If, for example, someone I know has good music taste, it would be nice to follow their tastes over time as well (Solution). Through this, I might discover new artists that I might not have already known, which would likely benefit Spotify’s success metrics as well.
My Favorite product is : WhatsApp.
WhatsApp is a messaging app available freely for android and ios users. It allows user to send text and voice messages or video calls .
It’s one of the early products invented in 2009 which solved the problem of communication via internet. Before that people used to communicate via sms.
Why I like :
1. Useful : It’s very useful , user can communicate irrespective of region or country . One doesn’t need a ISD connection to be able to connect to friends or family in other countries.
- Innovative : WhatsApp has continuously came up with innovative features to engage and acquire new users. Some of them are
- Enabling users to record a voice message and share. This has impacted huge customer base who are not very good in typing like users in age group of 45 to 60 and belonging to tier 3 cities.
- WhatsApp web: Connecting your laptop with mobile phone via scanning a QR code is very innovative. IT gives the end user the flexibility to use WhatsApp through laptop/desktop. It comes with some limitations though.
- Fingerprint Authentication : Adds another level of security to the app. With this feature enabled, even if you leave your phone unlocked, your chats cannot be accessed by anyone else, until it is verified by your fingerprint.
- Efficient : The best thing I like about WhatsApp is the ease of usage. Users need not learn new representations for each task - setting up a group chat in WhatsApp is aligned with adding new members to the existing chat . In application tutorial is not required to educate users. It comes natural to them.
- Innovative : WhatsApp has continuously came up with innovative features to engage and acquire new users. Some of them are
Things to improve
Target Metrics to improve : Engagement
I am considering the engagement as metrics to improve and below mentioned features are suggested taking this metric in to consideration
- Profile Photo Views : If user can see how many people viewed their profile pic , it gives appreciation to users. Currently one can comment on other’s DP
but cannot really know how many people viewed it.
- Bookmark Conversations : As a user I can bookmark the conversation in individual or group chat and can reference later.
- Improving Whats App groups : There are few improvements specifically for groups ,
- Firstly while forwarding a message to several groups, WhatsApp should automatically disable those groups that already have that message .
- Secondly providing group based password protection
Prioritizing the improvements
Feature | Effort | Impact | Priority |
Profile Photo Views | Low | High | P1 |
Bookmark Conversations | Medium | High | P2 |
Restrict forwarding duplicate content in groups | High | Medium | P3 |
Password protection for groups | Low | High | P1 |
Note: Effort is rated based on technical complexity.
After prioritizing the improvements , I shall choose following 2 features
- Profile Photo Views
- Password protection for groups
My fav product is Nike Training Club
Product Goal: The goal of the product is very clear in providing the platform for fitness at various levels of difficulty and tracking.

My favorite product is Dunzo.
Dunzo is a 24x7 delivery app that delivers anything to your doorstep in 45 minutes. They also deliver groceries, food, medicines, meat, and even pet supplies.
What I like
Convenience: I use it to deliver packages to my friends and family in an easy 2 step process. I can order almost anything from anywhere within the city and get it delivered immediately.
Ease of use: The UI is neat and organized making it very easy to use. The main search looks for items and vendors and gives the closest match, they also show results from google places which helps to buy from the unlisted stores.
Innovation: Started off as a task management group on WhatsApp, it is now a full-fledged hyperlocal delivery app. First to introduce a service that lets users 'hire' people, who in turn, run errands for them or carry out odd jobs on their behalf.
What I would do to improve
3 main metrics are acquisition, revenue, and retention
Multi-language support: Acquire users who don't know English.
Introduce a loyalty and membership program. This way retention will be higher and not lose to new competitors.
Voice assistant: Build a voice-based task list and easily convert that to action. This way the user does not forget the tasks to be completed and will increase revenue per customer.
- Pocket comes very handy in this case. I can not only categorize the articles that I save using the tags but also search the saved articles in future by simple user-defined tags that I attach to them
- Additionally, I have the in-app highlighter feature which helps me in highlighting the main points about the article.
- So, Pocket is useful and definitely many steps ahead of the old school bookmarking that I used in the past
My favorite product is Pocket.
Pocket is an application to create a reading list of articles and videos by saving them while browsing the internet. It is available as a desktop and mobile app but I use it as a chrome extension.
How it works is - after installing the extension, whenever I want to save a link (usually an article or a video), I click on the Pocket extension icon in my browser and it saves the link in its remote server. At the time of saving the article, it also suggests similar articles saved by other users in the past. While saving the article, I can also add a hashtag to the article by either selecting a previous hashtag or creating a new one. The links and their tags are synced across my devices.
The app is available in a Freemium model. Some of the features are only available to premium users such as searching articles using article content.
The reasons I like Pocket is because of its useful, easy to use, and innovative features.
- I used bookmarking in chrome prior to Pocket to save articles or my favorite links but I found that whenever I needed to go back to a saved link, I hardly remembered which folder did I save it to so, search was a big issue. In case, I found the link, I couldn’t recollect what information did I find useful in the article when I first landed on it.
- Secondly, the app is extremely intuitive and easy to use. I never needed a guided tour to understand its usage. There’s a search box at the top to search my saved articles using their titles or URL. There are 3-4 filters on the left side to search articles based on tags, highlights, whether they are favorite, and whether they are an article or a video. In case the list of tags becomes very long, I can always search the tags separately.
- Lastly, I would like to talk about some of the innovative ways in which Pocket differentiates itself from simple bookmarking.
- I can save articles by emailing links to them
- I can view articles in Article view, change the font size and background color for easier viewing of article
- I can share my saved links through email with my friends and family
While I like Pocket a lot, I really want a way to create notes on it, at least for the article that can be saved in Article view either a way to comment at the end or in-line notes marker just like we have in PDFs. Another feature that I would be ecstatic to have is a way in which I can collaborate on a saved article with my friends/colleagues/family. We both can either create a message thread on each different link or have a messaging window where we can immediately share the link and discuss about it in the moment. This will not only increase user engagement on the platform but also lead to the acquisition of more users as a user will need to invite his/her friends for the collaboration to take place.
1) Is it useful?
2) Is it innovative?
3) Is it easy to use/intuitive?
My favorite product to use is Google Photos and it meets those principles. As a user, I love how intuitive the design is, how seamlessly it works across all platforms and how it solves my photo sharing and storage issues. The other key thing is that it provides fun animations and photo edits to photos. As a PM, I think Google Photos has done an exceptional job as providing new ways to categorize and search for your photos. They're harnessing the power of Natural Language Processing (NLP) to help users find their photos and providing excellent facial recognition.
Google Photos has tackled key pain points users have when it comes to photo management. Storage, categorization and sharing. While I love using the product, I would suggest a coulple of areas to think about:
1) Improved geo-tagging, often times I check where photos were taken and the location is wrong. I think figuring out a stronger integration with Google Maps would help.
2) Having a way to tag censored content. For example, if I'm uploading photos of my passport/drivers license I want to be able to tag that so that it doesn't get shared or leaked
3) Better integration with social media apps such as Instagram. To share photos the native experience is to share via gmail or as a link. I tihnk having the ability to share directly to Instagram via Google photos would be super useful.
My favorite product is Apple News app.
It solves one of my biggest pain points of switching between 5-6 apps every day to consume news. After this, I don't need 6 different apps installed on my mobile to catch up on the day's news.
I like it because:
1. It serves news in a more digestible manner. With Apple news, I can focus on one news item at a time, completely consume it and move on to the next one. I find this hard to do on other apps like Google News because there are lot many moving parts on the screen like auto-play videos, banner ads, sliding news items, which makes it impossible to retain focus. I eventually ended up abandoning these apps after giving them a hard try.
2. Apple news is one of the best examples of human-centered design. There is a specific way humans do certain things like ordering food, shopping, buying magazines, etc. Apple News app does not deviate from this user habit and just to give you an anecdotal experience - reading a magazine on Apple news iPad app feels like holding a physical paper magazine in front of you. To provide this natural experience, Apple created a new format of its own called Apple News Format (ANF) in addition to using rich typography and photography.
3. Lastly, Apple news curation and fast learning of preferences are my delighters. Apple does both algorithmic and human curation, and I could really see the effort of curators through the unbiased news articles they present in spotlight section of the app. Moreover, it learns your preferences faster. Within a week of using the app, I started seeing news I like to read and in fact, I never had to set my preferences manually.
As much as I love it, being a heavy user, I find some things that can be improved on this app. I would like to talk about those if you want me to proceed.
My favorite product is Grammarly. When I think about why Grammarly as my favorite product, it comes down to three key points.
1. Useful - Is the product useful and solving a key pain point?
2. Efficient - Is the product solving the issue quicker with less effort from the user
3. Innovation - Is the product solving the user problem in a new way that makes the user smarter
As the interviewee might not be aware of the product, a good way to start the assessment is by giving a quick summary of the product.
"Grammarly is a spelling and grammar checking tool that is available to users as a standalone desktop application, web application, browser extension, and also as a plugin to MS word. The look and feel of standalone desktop application and web application is same - a simple text editor interface where user can either upload an existing document or create a new one. Grammarly highlights the errors and suggest corrections as the user types. The browser extension works little differently, where the errors are automatically highlighted using colors and the suggestions are shown when user hover over the highlighted text"
Now, I will assess Grammarly on the three key points that I mentioned above.
1. Useful - grammarly saves time by providing accurate suggestions. It does it by using latest machine learning algorithm and natural language processing to find the best match/ correction. It also enhanced user vocabulary by recommending more nuanced words that I can use in my writing. It also teaches me how to write more grammatically correct sentences.
2. Efficient - making correction using grammarly is very easy. As the user of the application, I just have to single click on the suggestion and it replaces the incorrect word with the new one. I don't have to open up a new window to do so (in MS word, user has to click multiple times for correction). Correcting an entire para takes as many clicks as there are grammatical errors.
3. Innovation - grammarly uses latest machine learning algorithm and predictive technologies to improve accuracy of detecting wrong word and suggesting the best word to replace. Also grammarly work cross platform.
To summarize, grammarly is my favorite application as it useful, efficient, and innovative. "Grammarly is a spelling and grammar checking tool that is available to users as a standalone desktop application, web application, browser extension, and also as a plugin to MS word. Canva is a free online graphic design platform that helps you create various designs, including social media posts, presentations, posters, videos, and logos. It offers templates, photo, and video editing tools, and the ability to customize design elements like photos, GIFs, stock videos, background music, and fonts.
Let's explore why Canva is widely used:
1. Students and working professionals heavily rely on Canva to create presentations for academic and office purposes.
2. Canva's vast library of slide templates and design tools is frequently utilized by students to create visually appealing and impactful presentations.
3. Users save a significant amount of time using the tool as it provides an efficient way of completing tasks.
Why I prefer Canva:
1. User-friendly and intuitive interface.
2. Smooth and effective sharing options.
3. Access to a wide variety of templates.
4. Minimal effort is required to create high-quality designs.
My user persona:
I'm Andy, 26 years old, an MBA student. I use Canva primarily to create presentations and social media post designs. I value ease of use, quick access to templates, time efficiency, and easy sharing with peers.
Canva has become an essential part of my daily routine as a postgraduate student because of its ease of use and ability to streamline my design process. During my MBA journey, I often faced tight deadlines, particularly when creating presentations, and Canva's intuitive interface allowed me to meet those challenges without hassle. As a member of the entrepreneurship cell and founder of the PM SIG at IIM Nagpur, I needed a tool that enabled me to quickly design social media posts, build engagement, and brand the SIG effectively.
Canvas ready-to-use templates, minimal learning curve, and seamless sharing options made it my go-to tool over others, allowing me to create professional designs with minimal effort. Its efficiency in helping me juggle multiple roles—student, social media manager, and leader—set it apart from other platforms.
My favorite product is Waze navigation app.
Waze's mission is to improve the quality of everyone's daily driving. They do so by connecting real-time data from its users to calculate optimal routes during rush hours (but not only), has excellent UI/UX, allows reporting and so much more.
Waze came into a very stale space, where people either used printed maps, or simply their memory from previous trips. Later came the navigation location GPS based apps.
Waze has changed the way people drive, they not only need to know the options to take, they are able to defaultly choose the shortest one.
Waze is both efficient and innovative.
Things I would improve:
- Electrice vehicle features (EV) - while Waze started treating this emerging need a few years ago, it is still very much a challenge to navigate wizely using EV charging stations. While more and more populations around the world swith to EV driving, Waze is left behind covering for this users pain point. I would suggest:
- Allow users setup their profile as an EV driver or turn on EV features (this part exists) - and configure route recommendations with EV stops. Most EV drivers do not charge their EV daily, but do use Waze daily. A typical use case for private drivers is using Waze for weekend trips, which are typically more distant as opposed to your daily commute, and then-EV public charging is highly relevant. Waze can benefit from introducing navigation routes which include EV charging by coupling with EV charging stations for ads (they already do for some), but also be able to charge up your EV using the Google/Waze account and charge a comission for this partnership.
- Introduce more valuable information in EV charging stations such as price per charging, speed, and near-by locations to spend the time while I wait for my EV to charge up.
- Another segment that can be interesting to look at are commercial drivers (buses, taxi drivers, delivery) which may be using EV and need solutions while navigating.
- Set current location. Any new navigation using Waze starts at a local location, which can be in percise for multiple use cases:
- Driver is in a limited GPS location (parking lots for example)
- Driver wants to plan a drive - the current way to do so is to select a destination, leave later, and edit the exit location.
- Improve ETA accuracy. Waze drivers around the world think it's an easy task to caluclate their exact arrival time :) while it is not an easy task, it is very valuable to Waze drivers. Waze can use historical data, current weather conditions, as well as construction work and road blocks to improve its ETA accuracy thus trengthen trust with the Waze drivers.
- Very much like EV features, Waze can expand their navigation service into additional areas related to driving such as road help, car washes, tyre shops, parking and more. Support of quick actions where people are using the navigation app can benefit both Waze as a revenue factor, and strengthen the driver's engagement, satistfaction and more.
Feature | Reach | Impact | Confidence | Ease | Score |
EV routing | 2 | 2 | 3 | 3 | 36 |
EV charging location data | 2 | 1 | 2 | 1 | 4 |
Set current location | 2 | 1 | 2 | 3 | 12 |
Improve ETA | 3 | 3 | 3 | 1 | 27 |
Additional services | 2 | 1 | 1 | 1 | 2 |
To summarize, Waze is a great app that is being used by millions every day, and it has potential to monitize in new areas, as well as serve crowds that have new emerging needs.
Hi All, The below is my answer. Please review and share your feedback.
My favourite product is Imobile Pay, which is a mobile banking application of ICICI Bank that has 28 million active users and contributes to a total transaction value of INR. 9000 bn in the fiscal year 2023. This app is available in the form of a mobile application across Android and Apple Devices.
The users of the product are Retail Banking Customers, Standalone asset and Credit Card customers and Non-ICICI Bank customers.
If I have to describe why it is my favourite product, it boils down to 3 key aspects.
- How useful is it?
- How easy to use is it?
- How innovative is it?
Firstly, when it comes to usefulness, this app has access to 400+ banking services with a coverage of 90% of all the transactions offered by the bank through physical channels. No other competitors like HDFC, Axis, SBI etc. has such a wide coverage enabled in their mobile app for their mobile banking customers.
Secondly, when it comes to easiness, the end to end digital journeys are simple typically covering 1-2 screens for majority of the transactions and the user navigation is seamless. Also similar transactions are grouped together making them easily accessible.
Finally, when it comes to innovation, Imobile has some unique features like Insta Banking and Smart Wire which no other bank has it in their mobile journeys. Insta Banking uses prestaging technology and allows customers to initiate transactions while on the go with out a need to fill physical forms and wait in the branches while allowing the tellers to fetch the transaction without any need to create the transaction there by increasing operational efficiency and reducing transitional errors.
Smart wire is a pull mechanism of cross border payments that allows the recipient to request money from parties located in a different country by pre-filing the remittance instruction for the sender.
To summarise, my favourite product is Imobile Pay. It is useful, easy to use and innovative.
If the interviewer asks improvements:
Although Insta Banking feature simplifies the transactional wait time and increases operational efficiency , the end customer still need to visit the branch, wait in the queue before the transaction is processed.
I want to improve this by tracking customer location with his/her permission and displaying the nearby branches along with the branch wait times and queuing information so that the customer can make informed decisions to choose a preferred branch for transaction completion making the transactions super fast and near instant.
- My favourite product is WhatsApp, which is used to communicate with each other by text, video and audio. The users are the one who wants to interact with each other on a day-to-day essential or convey any information or update their loved ones.
- I use WhatsApp to communicate personally and professionally through audio, video and text messages. I use WhatsApp for its simplicity and ease of usefulness for the task I need to do.
The three things I like and think why users prefer to use WhatsApp is because of its user-friendly design, and also after so many years of being launched, it is still focusing on the core problem, which is solving and making it easier to connect without thinking about any geographical barrier; it has become an integral part of each, and everyone's life and people treat it as a source to communicate with their loved ones and give them update about their life happenings, i.e. the status feature of the app which also makes users emotionally connected to the app and makes it, even more, closes to their life.
A few of the competitors which I would like to add are Signal, telegram and Discord, which also solves the problem of connecting but with different core values; where telegram platform is majorly used by people who wants to share large file and folder, and also to a broader audience. Discord is known for its extensive chat feature, including the ability to create servers and channels for different topics and communities, which is popular among gamers.
The essential thing that makes WhatsApp superior is its user base and simplicity, which makes it far ahead in the competition.
My favourite product is the GIGL audiobook platform because it offers over 1+ million audiobooks in 7 different languages in a very concise manner only around 30 mins listings with book summaries and an offline download option in it and provides a hassle-free experience without ads on the app and website. It also understands the price-sensitive market of India offering Rs 365/per year. It has a great library for free audiences offering various genres of audiobooks free for all
I would also like to improve in some aspects -
1. Improve the books recommendation page, every user has a different area of interest I think the app lags on it. Adding a button like the OTTs platform is useful for users to explore the library of their choice.
matrics targeted - user retention, average time spent on the platform
2. Adding weekly top charts, by adding top charters of the week or month increases user interest and developed peer pressure on the individual user.
matrics target-user retention, average time spent on the platform
3. Adding more content libraries to it. I am a premium user of the platform many times I didn't find the desired audiobook of my choice the app has the feature of book recommendations to developers to add the book but it lags to catering the audience and it is slow to respond in my case I barely getting any reply or update on it.
matrics target-user retention, average time spent on the platform
Impact | Complexity | |
1. | High | Low |
2. | Medium | Low |
3. | High | High |
4. | Medium | Medium |
5. | Medium | Medium |
To summarize My favourite product is the GIGL audiobook platform it has lot more to offer some aspects to improve
One of my favorite product is my Garmin Fenix 5, It is a premium category, multisport smartwatch, that is great for new athletes, or individuals who geek out on performance metrics. I particularly like it for its simplicity, ruggedness, and accuracy.
Some key aspects of this products are:
1. Usability: It can be a great day to day device, for tracking activities like running, step counts, heart rate etc. Prior to Garmin, there were 2 separate categories of smartwatches, one for media/apps like apple, samsung, moto and other for health and fitness like Fitbit and Whoop. Garmin was first mover in integrating both type of capabilities into one device. Also, like the physical button instead of touch screen as it is really diffcult
2. Innovation: Fenix sapphire screen, offline integration with spotify, trail maps availability offline, solar panels on top screen makes it one of a kind watch. Also, free garmin app that has great analytics, coaching capabilities is interesting too.
3. Efficiency: Great battery life (7 days or so), Rugged exterior, accurate GPS, fairly accurate HRM makes it a great device too.
In terms of improvement, I would suggest following features:
1. Improving display quality: New era display looks much sexy and has a user friendly UI, Garmin should think about upgrading its display quality at cost (Impact to user - low, to biz - low, implementation effort - med)
2. AI based coaches - With advent of AI everywhere, I think there is a possbility to include customize plan for individuals who have some physical goals and need custom plan to achieve it. (impact to user - high, to biz - high, implementation effort - high)
3. Advanced features such as LTE capabilities (optional) (impact to user - med, to biz - low, implementation effort - high)
4. backward integration with 3rd party: Though Garmin is capable of sharing data to strava or apple health, it is not compatible otherwise, I think it will be great to have it in place so users are not vendor locked, and can potentially come back to Garmin. (impact to user - med, to biz - high, implementation effort - high)
5. SOS features (Apple Ultra is the first one to offer it, and I think it does make sense to have such feature in the watch) (impact to user - high, to biz - med, implementation effort - med)
To summarize, I would pick up AI based coaches, as it has high ROI in long run. I would also think about meet comp features such as SOS capabilities. Garmin is a great watch but it has to ensure that it is creating moat for itself as Apple, Samsung, new gen Whoop are catching up pretty fast.
my favorite products is the "Amazon Kindle E-reader". As a hypothetical Product Owner, I can break down its usefulness, efficiency, and ease of use as follows:
Usefulness: The Kindle's primary function is to provide a platform for reading digital books, which it executes superbly. It offers a vast library of books, newspapers, and magazines from around the world, many of which are significantly cheaper than their physical counterparts. It's incredibly portable, allowing users to carry thousands of books in a single, lightweight device, making it ideal for travel or commuting. Furthermore, it has features that aren't possible with physical books, such as adjustable text size, built-in dictionaries, and the ability to highlight and make notes without damaging the book.
Efficiency: The Kindle is designed to provide a seamless reading experience. Its E-ink technology closely mimics the appearance of printed paper, reducing eye strain associated with backlit screens. Moreover, its impressive battery life can last for weeks, eliminating the need for frequent charging. The integration with Amazon's marketplace allows for instantaneous book purchases and downloads, bypassing the need for physical distribution and reducing the environmental footprint. Also, its Whispersync feature allows you to keep your place across devices, so you can switch between reading on your Kindle and smartphone without losing your spot.
Ease of Use: The Kindle interface is simple and intuitive. Even tech novices can easily navigate its interface to download and read books. It's straightforward to adjust text size and brightness for optimal comfort. The latest models also offer touch-screen capabilities, allowing users to turn pages and select options with a simple swipe or tap. The Kindle also offers features like a built-in dictionary and Wikipedia lookup, making it easy to research unfamiliar terms or concepts.
Attempting for the first time, would love to know about the feedback.
ROVER
Before I tell you why it’s my favorite product, I will quickly talk about its mission and review how it works.
Rover’s mission is “to make it easier for people to have pet love in their lives.”
Rover has two multiple types of users, pet owners, pet care providers, insurance providers, vets, training providers, etc.
Pet owners can register on the mobile app or web app and fill in their pet details, photos, payment details, preferences, and dates for which they need services and Rover comes up with a list of providers which have services availability for that criterion. Pet owners can message potential babysitters if they find one they like, arrange a meet-and-greet, and hire them by making a payment via Rover’s platform
Pet care providers, on the other hand, can publish the services they offer, calendar availability, recommendations, feedback, etc.
Business objective
Rover’s business model primarily benefits from the reservation service fees that it charges to both pet owners and pet care providers. The more bookings via the Rover (app or website), the better the revenue.
User Personas
· Pet owners
· Pet care providers for day/night boarding
· Pet walkers
· Insurance providers
· Training Specialist
I have been using Rover from the pet owner’s perspective, so would like to cover that area.
Pet owner’s pain points and how Rovers helps.
Pet owner’s pain points –
· No one place to look for pet care. People mostly rely on young kids or families to take care of their pets while they are gone in the neighborhood.
· No reliable service and planning need to be done in advance.
· No single repository to find the pet boarding, and walking service, either relying on social media communities or word of mouth.
· Service is not catered to per pet’s needs.
Rover provides with the below
Innovation – Provides both pet owners and pet care providers a centralized place to connect.
Usefulness – Pet owners can find the services they are looking for and can easily find providers in a specific area based on their criteria. Easy to book, rebook, reschedule, and cancel appointments.
Efficient – Easy to log in and update details, payment, and insurance is built into the platform, so pet owners won’t need to buy it separately. Provides peace of mind as a background check is conducted for each service provider and recommendations are based on real customer feedback.
Improvements Area
Refund of money – Rover charges ahead of time and in case there is a refund needed, the owner and pet provider must go via the customer service path.
Adoption rate – Rover can increase the adoption range by connecting the pet owners with other pet owners for arranged play dates, etc., and building a community of like-minded pet owners
Enterprise offerings – As the need of pet owners are evolving, Rover can work with hotels, companies, Airbnb, etc. providers to offer more services while owners can take the pets with them and enjoy and provide necessary services, and offerings (food, bed, etc.) for pet owners.
Community – Pet owners are constantly on the lookout for friends of their pets in a safe environment.
Event planning – There is not many places or event where users can take their pets and events for their pets.

Based on the fact that Rover’s majority revenue generation is from the service fees, I would like to prioritize event and enterprise offerings. By opening these channels, Rover can work with companies, hotels, etc. by providing a safer and more reliable service for pets and opening a new revenue stream.
The event will provide more engagement for both the pet owners and pet care providers. Pet care providers can host the event at a certain fee and rover can take a percentage of it while pet owners can enjoy the event with a safer gathering.
A favorite product of mine is Amazon Echo which I use quite frequently and discover, learn and explore ways to integrate into my daily life
WHY?
Aha features - I enjoy the delight it gives me to just ask Alexa to play music, and also stream from my choice platform e.g. spotify or otherwise default it would stream with amazon music. AI is making Alexa also respond to high-rich commands like 'Play the liked songs from the list". Otherwise, to play music would require the effort to setup physical devices etc...
Interoperability - though cross-platform was an issue with Alexa, however, those seem to have been addressed in new releases and as mentioned I can now integrate with spotify on iphone and so makes users to not-switch and homing into a single platform
Optimize productivity with Alexa Skills - Endless innovative ways to interact to optimize by centralizing content, whether it be creating a shopping list, read a book, manage you day-to-day activities with alerts, alarms and integrating these featurs with Amazon shopping experiences
What would I Improve in Alexa?
- >> Improve user engagement <<-
Some of the user pain points in terms of engagement
-> Echo is not portable, and you need raise your voice when you move away or in another room.
--> solution value/priority - create survey and insights to understand if this is a feature the user would prefer
-> Stop discovering new skills, Folks use echo for a min of 5-10 skills once they master new skill, but eventaully forget about it and stop to also discover new skills on the alexa app.
--> solution value/priority - create a push strategy to motivate echo users to us and hear new discoveries within Alexa innovation process, and get user insights on any skills they prefer to be implemented
Solutions w/ Prioritize based on Impact, Effort and Value/Priorit
Feature | Impact | Effort | Value /Priorty |
Making Echo Portable (many other hardware support wireless charging) | M | M | 2 |
Notify users with an alert band on the echo, which indicates new skills are queued to discover and learn | H | H | 1 |
Metrics to track the improvement
- > Once these hardware features are introduced track how many times these features were invoked and activated
1. For portable echo..changes in the GPS locations
2. For learning new skills - and get the rating on the skills
based on these measure the KPIs as
1. % of increase in usage time of Echo Daily, Weekly, Monthly
2. % of time the new features were used
Caveats / Blockers
There may be an increase in cost to the hardware with the implementation of these hardware enhancements, and hence, this will require network effects to build customer base and adoption in purchase of the newer and upgraded versions
To answer this question, I will use the following framework:
- Describe the product
- Why is the product successful?
- Quickly talk through the product/company competitors
- Identify a user group (I'll choose the one that I am in since it will help with authentic pain points).
- Outline some of that user groups major pain points
- prioritize them
- brainstorm some solutions
- prioritize them
Key Action | Pain Point | Priority (based on impact and reach) |
Log in | skip this one | |
Select a class | a) Hard to find which class is best suited for me b) Some of the classes are not competitive enough | a) L b) H |
Do the workout | a) workout wasn't hard enough b) Annoyed that some bikes are easire than other so leaderboard is skewed c) I don't want to see people on the leaderboard that are not in my skill level | a) L (you can make it as hard as you want) b) M c) M |
Check metrics post workout | a) I want to see how that class measured up to my previous classes b) I want to see my trends over my previous workouts |
Based on the above, I think there is a common theme across a lot of these pain points, which is around competition lack of equality across the users on the bike. I will prioritze the H, but believe we might be able to solve some of the others as well.
Pain Point | Solutions | Priority |
Some of the classes aren't competitive enough | a) Create competitions that people can sign up for to win prizes b) create a ranking system so that users can be ranked based on their performance in certain classes and then their leaderboard is filtered by those in their skil level c) Show physical progress of bikes compared to one another (rather than just the name and power output) to make the classes more competitive | a) H/H b) M/M c)M/L |
Given the above, I would prioritze item a (assuming we have no restrictions on timing for this improvement). I think there is an opportunity to almost create a league (or groups of leagues) within the peloton ecosystem that users could sign up for and race in. There could even be championships held in the live studios in NY, and prices and rankings handed out to users. The on thing to consider with this improvement is the potential impact to the casual rider, as they may not like the idea of making peloton more competitive.
Spotify is a music streaming service which gives users access to millions of songs. Spotify lets you to listen to songs from any artist or from any album. You can also listen to podcasts and watch music videos using Spotify.
I use Spotify to listen to songs and podcasts at home as well as while commuting. I also listen to Spotify while travelling on a business trip or on holidays.
Users
Artists
Content Creators/Podcast Hosts
General Audience who consume this content
Past Painpoints
Before Spotify launched, previously people had to search various websites online to get access to music tracks and download them. Most of these websites were not legal either. They could buy music online from some websites but not all music that was released was available there.
People would often buy music CDs and DVDs and would extract content from them and load their music players or phones.
There was no way a new artist would get that kind of exposure unless a major recording Label would release a track and a lot of people would end up buying the track online or buy music CDs and DVDs.
How Spotify helped these users?
With Spotify, users could search and listen to new tracks from any artist around the world.
You can also download tracks and listen to them offline using Spotify even if internet is not available.
You also get curated daily mixes and weekly playlists which Spotify compiles based on your listening history and artists you have added on Spotify.
You can listen to different podcasts on Spotify which are not available on other platforms and exclusively available on Spotify or iTunes only.
You can also start creating a playlist and share with your friends and together you can collab and create a playlist of all your fav songs.
As a new artist or someone creating podcasts you can instantly promote your music or podcast online by releasing it on Spotify and you will get exposure to a huge audience.
Why Spotify is better than others?
A lot of players have tried to copy Spotify. Spotify had the first mover advantage in this space.
Spotify is also the best at recommending new tracks and artists through its daily mixes and curated playlists.
One of the unique features is you can collaboratively create playlists with other users
Spotify focuses on a lot of attracting local artists and local talent catering to specific regions or countries which gives them an advantage over other players in the space.
Spotify has a huge set of DAU which enables new artists and podcast creators to get access to a huge audience.
Improving Spotify
Goal of improvement to increase engagement on Spotify
Painpoints
Most young users want to get recommended new tracks and new artists which they can explore and would love to know which tracks their friends are listening to.
Young users love a social angle to everything. They want to share tracks or playlists and want their friends to listen to those tracks or playlists.
Solutions
Most Played and Most Liked Tracks by their friends
Allow users to add friends on Spotify either by connecting Facebook or google
They should be able to see what their friends are listening to most and like the most.
Shared Playlists
Allow users to add friends on Spotify either by connecting Facebook or google
Once your friends will share playlists with you, users will be able to see these playlists on this page
Metrics
Number of tracks listened to per day
Number of tracks listened to per day from friends list or playlists
Number of playlist shares per user per week
Time spent listening to tracks on Spotify
Fav product - airbnb
Reasons:
- UI is great. Images are really great.
- Now they have videos if you hover on them
- It gives its hosts free photo shoot so they can advertise catchy content
Vision: End to end platform handling every part of your trip
Segments it caters to : hosts, guests
Good points for Hosts
Focus on the differentiating factor for hosts
- If you are a host, it really caters to the whole 'sharing experience' which is not seen in competition
- For hosts, there is hosting experiences and their houses
Good points for Guests
- Really good for families who are more than 2 usually and need a kitchenette etc.
- Good for guests who don’t like to have a hotel exp
Hosts for experiences - a new segment
- Online experiences is something that really sets them apart from its competitors like booking.com
- Interactive experiences unlike static content
- Personal compared to tripadvisor that has experiences but it is from companies more than individual people
- Cancellation policy is great
- Coped with covid for extenuating policy and covid
Now I would look at some pain points/opportunities for the guests since I think the mission of Airbnb is to have an end to end platform handling part of your trip
Improvements:
- The reviews can be fixed. Like if I get stuck with a bad review, I should be able to reply even after 15 days
- Interests/ enhance the experiences: Food is a big part so curate content based on good restaraunts
- Personalize: Personalize and see what your friends have booked (keep me front and center)
- Get my preferences
- If I have a day trip, plan the entire day for me
- Show me activities that interest me
- User generated content: What my friends are doing, where are they going. What are the trending places
- Integrate social media - user generated content

Microsoft teams is business communication platform offered under a suite of products in Microsoft 365. It provides capabilities such as chat, meetings, calls, documents sharing and integrations with other applications for efficient team collaboration especially for remote working
It is used by companies so that their employees can communicate and collaborate and to host webinars.
It is also by universities or teaching institutions for remote learning.
The business objective of teams is to be the ultimate communication and collaboration platform.
I will talk from the perspective of an employee at a corporate using teams.
My requirement to work efficiently in remote environment is –
1. Organized conversations with different teams
2. Chat capabilities in meetings that stays after the meetings are done
3. Text formatting capabilities
Now all the basic features in any communication platform are more or less same.
Where Teams stands out is in terms of usefulness. Compared to other chat platforms such as Slack (which I have used in previous organizations) I find teams more structured and organized that allows to create channels for different topics/projects under a team. It further allows to add different tabs within a channel.
Ex – I created a team for a new feature development and then one channel for dev communication, other one for stakeholder communication. Let’s take stakeholder communication channel, inside which I added a tab for release notes and other tab for feedback. Also I can manage access permission so that stakeholders are not bothered with ongoing dev communications. In Slack however you have to create two different channels and there is no way to identify how those two channels are relatable.
Secondly, I like the way how teams is innovative in giving an option to chat without even joining the meeting. This feature is not available in other communication platforms like zoom and slack.Using this feature I am able to inform other attendees if I am running late without even joining the call and continue discussion in the same window on action items of the meeting.
Thirdly, I like how teams provides more formatting options in text editor compared to other platforms. It provides a more word processing-like experience, with the abilities to choose a font color, select from three font sizes, insert a table, undo and redo typing, apply paragraph styles.
So, that is why teams is my favorite product given how organized and collaborate it is making my life convenient and super productive.
Now, coming to few improvements that I think can make this platform even more effective.
1. Ability to identify and merge two meetings with similar title so that we have all the communications/recordings at one place for same topic.
UX improvements to see Draft messages at one place
My favorite product is HEY. When I think about why HEY as my favorite product, it comes down to three key points.
1. Useful: Is the product useful and solving a key pain point?
2. Efficient: Is the product solving the issue quicker with less effort from the user?
3. Innovation: Is the product solving the user problem in a new way that makes the user smarter?
HEY is an email service provider available to users as a web app, desktop app, and mobile app. Before HEY, users spent too much time screening through an overwhelming email inbox, where job-related, personal, and marketing emails were cluttered in the same space. At first, you would believe HEY is like any other email service provider. However, HEY stands apart by letting the users take control of who can contact them.
I will now assess HEY on the three key points I mentioned above:
1. Useful - HEY delivers email in a more digestible manner. With HEY, I can screen who's allowed to contact me. With a simple "Yes/No" screening button, users get to decide if the person emailing them will be able to contact them again.
A core problem email users face is getting messages without their consent. It could be an email provider selling ads against their inbox, a newsletter someone else signed them up for, a salesperson reaching out to inquire, or someone who somehow got their email address.
Taking control of their inbox lets users retain focus and become more productive.
2. Efficient - Organizing your inbox is very easy. When users of the app screen someone in, their email lands in one of three places: an important email they want to read immediately goes to The Imbox (Short for important inbox). Non-urgent emails like newsletters that you read occasionally go to The Feed, and things like receipts that users rarely need to read go to The Paper Trail.
Important emails, transactional emails, and newsletters get mixed up with traditional email service providers. Or worse, they get automatically classified by an inaccurate AI (I'm looking at you, Gmail).
With HEY, users can easily classify email according to what's relevant to them.
3. Innovation - HEY is an entirely new approach to using email, redefining how users interact with their inbox. HEY is an opinionated software that proposes that we get less email, not more. It benefits the receiver rather than the sender, contrary to what happens in traditional email services.
HEY is my favorite application as it is useful, efficient, and innovative.
No product is perfect. Even though I love HEY, it has features to improve.
Target Metrics to improve: Churn on subscriptions.
I am considering the churn on subscriptions as a metric to improve, and the below-mentioned features are suggested for considering this metric.
HEY charges $99/year with a 14-days free trial for its service. New users can feel that HEY makes email more laborious.
1. Notifications - Notifications are used sparingly. HEY's approach to notifications is built around explicit permission. Instead of alerting you to every new email, HEY lets you opt into notifications for individual senders or email threads.
With everything HEY does to screen out unwanted contacts, anything reaching the inbox is important by definition. Having to accept notifications manually can backfire for users, making them check compulsively throughout the day for new messages.
Solution: Let users opt into inbox notifications. Sending notifications when new emails land in the Imbox takes the extra effort away.
Offering novel solutions but still making users feel familiarized with what they've used before will reduce churn on subscriptions. As they won't feel frustrated trying to figure out why something they expected to happen didn't.
Over the pandemic it was a goal of mine to become more fluent in Spanish. As a result, I become a frequent user of Duolingo.
If you are unfamiliar, Duolingo is mobile app built to help users learn various languages through different tiered lessons and checkpoints. It is monetized with in app ads and a premium plan that includes unlimited time on app along with additional exercises.
Before I talk about improvements, I’d like to point out why I believe this product-led app is successful.
With an emphasize on user satisfaction and engagement, I find that they do three things well to address paint points when learning a new language:
· Convenience
· Multiple Ways to Learn
· Fun & Interactive
With it being a web app unlike some of the earlier language learning tools, it’s easy to practice quickly for a few minutes every day while you’re on the go or lying in bed before you go to sleep.
They consider that not everyone learns in the same way and offer structured lessons to learn the basics as well as short stories and audio lessons to put words into context. The different types of lessons really allow you to read, speak, and listen in whatever format works best for you.
Over multiple updates and iterations I’ve watched the app change into a fun and gamified experience. Learning a new language definitely requires effort and you have to be consistent or else you’re not going to learn much. They chose bright, exciting colors and a supportive mascot to cheer you on along with frequent notifications to keep you on track.
Their top competitor Babbel fails to provide as much content and ways to learn within their freemium model. Additionally, I find that the service is not as lively or engaging as Duolingo.
While Duolingo does a great job attracting and engaging users, there are areas in which I believe there is room for improvement such as
· Time allowed on App for Freemium Plan
· Streak Continuation
Currently, in the free version you can only practice until you lose all your 5 lives and if you do fail it does not count towards a daily practice streak. This has the potential to reduces user engagement and discourage a user from continued daily practiced.
The key risk here is the lack of revenue growth into the premium plan if too many features are openly available. However, some A/B testing could be run to see if engagement improved and other paths to the premium plan could be tried such as previews at the end of lesson of the more in-depth exercises that are available behind the paywall.
Telegram is a free messaging app available for android, ios, and windows for phones as well as desktops. It allows users to send texts, voice notes, and make normal calls and video calls.
Why do I like Telegram?
Telegram being a messaging app supports almost the features that are available in other messaging apps such as WhatsApp, iMessage, etc.
Here is a broad-level classification of why I like telegram more than its competitors.
Useful:Telegram is very useful for communication, the user can communicate irrespective of any region, and the user can make national international calls or video calls at no additional costs as long as the data or wifi is enabled on the user's device.
One can also share voice notes and share files (limit of 1.5GB/file) with telegram.
Innovative:
Telegram comes with multiple features that make it innovative and stand out from its competition, we will discuss a few of my favorite features here.
1. Cross-Device and Cross-Platform Support:
The user can use telegram from their phone, or desktop, or from browser. Telegram is also available for major operating systems such as android, ios, and windows.
2. Channels:
Unlike other messaging apps, Telegram has a feature similar to groups which are called Channel, one can easily join or create a public channel. Channels come to use for like-minded people to share information, it can be one way or both, a channel can have unlimited members. Different channels can be created for different use cases.
3. Pin Messages in Chat:
The user can pin important messages in a chat, telegram allows the user to pin multiple messages from the conversation which can be accessed later.
4. Works with Username:
With telegram, it is possible to communicate with other users based on their username which I think is absolutely innovative. In order to communicate with another user, one can share their username and can chat with them, there is no need of sharing an email or phone number to start the communication. This is a great feature for protecting one’s privacy.
5. Unlimited Storage and Data Backup:
User’s data; chat, media, files, etc are backed up on telegrams cloud storage and there is actually no limit for storage. Telegram backs up users' data into its own cloud storage which helps users access files easily across devices.
Efficient:
1. Telegram is very easy to use, its UI is very simple which makes it easy for everyone to access all features of telegram.
2. Telegram works independently of other synced devices, user can use telegram on desktop even when their phone or data is off.
3. With the support of unlimited storage, one needs not to worry about the device’s storage.
Improvements
Target Metric: Engagement
1. Status:Users should be able to upload status which supports text, media, and links, this will help users quickly share updates with other fellow users.
Usecase: A business owner can put up the status of photos along with links to newly launched products.
2. Multiple Profiles.Users should be able to switch between different profiles. Users can have different profiles for work, personal, etc. Depending on the profile, user can change their profile pic and bio. The user can choose which fellow user should be under which of their profile. This feature can help users avoid having multiple numbers/accounts for a single app.
Usecase: Users can select colleagues or tag them under a certain profile to be able to allow them only to see the specified profile, here we can say Business Profile.
3. Profile Views.Since telegram allows users to search for other users based on username and nearby location, the user should know who’s is searching for them. This feature will help users with transparency and also provide privacy.
Usecase: Users able to check who viewed their profile.
4. Profile Pic Download Views.Since telegram allows users to download other users’ profile photos, telegram should allow users to check who downloaded their profile pic. This feature will help users with transparency and also provide privacy.
Usecase: Users able to check who downloaded their profile picture.
Prioritization
Feature | Effort | Impact |
Status | Med | High |
Multiple Profile | High | High |
Profile Views | Low | Med |
Profile Pic Downloads | Low | Med |
Note: Effort is rated based on technical complexity.
After prioritizing the improvements, I shall choose the following 3 features
1. Status
2. Profile Views
3. Profile Pic Downloads
What is the product?
It is a social network platform for professionals to connect with each other and help them accelerate their career. It’s also became a place to find content on businesses, products, and services as well as a place to find job opportunities and connect candidates with hiring companies.
What it does well?
Targeted User Base: It has leveraged the online social network model for a different use case that is different from Facebook. LinkedIn provided people an avenue to share their professional resume, thoughts, and career achievements. It also changed how people network with each other. What fascinates me is that prior to Linkedin, people were keeping a little black book or a rolodex with notes on their professional contacts. But now with LinkedIn, you are able to have this effortlessly recorded, curated and readily available via an online application.
Useful Recruiting Tool: Each professional has multiple ways to set up their professional brand via LinkedIn. Through their personal profile page, you can list out your resume and achievements for others to see. Through the recommendation section, you can share what other colleagues have said about you. Through the other activities and recent posts and who you follow, others can find out your interests and expertise. By reading just your profile page, I have a 360 view of who you are and what you do for work. Previously it would take days for an HR person to reach out for the resume, call for reference, and interview you to know more about your expertise in the area of your profession. With LinkedIn, you save some time in screening potential candidates and have better in depth engagements about their work.
Make Professional Networking Easy: LinkedIn has gamified professional networking by offering badges, interests groups, leadership following features to help people engage digitally. I personally am somewhat of an introvert and going to large conferences and doing professional networking can take a lot out of me. With LinkedIn, I am able to meet and connect with targeted people that I’m interested in talking to, do better research before reaching out to someone, and with the chat feature, it takes away some of the awkwardness of small talk in professional networking when it’s face to face.
What would you add?
Multimedia content Strategy: The professional workforce is constantly changing and LinkedIn should adapt to different types of medium for the posting board to appeal to different kinds of professions and emerging industries. Also, what traditionally was acceptable like a 10min read of a white paper may not be the easiest to digest for people now. Research shows that our attention spans are getting shorter and we want information quicker and easier. Which is why applications like TikTok and Snap have been popular in recent years. I think LinkedIn can continue to improve its content strategy by offering short videos as a way to share professional expertise and services. The challenge however is to balance this from being perceived as unprofessional and uncredible content. One way to counter that belief can be providing more standardized frameworks or templates for content creators. Having a structure in these professional quick videos can help limit what can be posted. By adding this new feature, it can boost their user base targeting a different segment of profession like artists and designers, or even the younger generation that’s just entering the workforce soon, those who LinkedIn currently have lacked appeal to.
What is your favorite product and why?
I am a sports enthusiast and have always been playing some sport or the other to keep myself fit. Since the pandemic, it had become difficult to get out of the house and working out indoors was the only way to get any kind of physical activity. I never thought of myself as a gymming person perse so the idea of working out never appealed to me that much. That’s when I got introduced to the Nike Training Club app. It is a fitness app that provides a holistic training guide to its users so basically you dont have to go anywhere else for guided workouts to figuring out what you want to eat to stay healthy or even get that push of motivation to keep going. So basically, all fitness enthusiasts aiming for fitness in or out of gym are its users.
From a business standpoint, Nike earlier followed a premium subscription based model but decided to serve its users for free since the pandemic. Rather than monetize through subscription revenue, Nike is making the app free in hopes that it will help drive merchandise purchases.
Why you like NTC in particular over its competitors?
Highly personalised and ease of use:
As a beginner I wasn’t sure of what workout to start with. All the fitness apps have tons of suggestions but i rather felt very overwhelmed. In case of NTC, it started out by taking a basic quiz that asks your fitness level and how many days you typically work out in a week and if you want any equipemts involved in your workouts. From there, it recommends a few options of multi-week programs to follow. These guided multiweek plans are highly flexible that other apps don't offer. It was a game changer for me, having progressively more challenging and different workouts kept me engaged and allowed me to gauge my progress as I performed better. Even If I miss a few days, the app will prompt me to adjust or update my plan according to my progress and schedule.
All in one place fitness tracker:
You can keep track of everything you've done here.
This goes beyond the workouts you do in the app. There's a section here to add other activities, like a hiking trip or a pick-up soccer game. Not only does this section track workouts, it also gives you milestones to work towards, include total numbers of minutes spent working out.
The app also complements your fitness routine with advice on nutrition, recovery, mindset and sleep. So you don’t have go google the kind of diet you should be maintaining.
Intuitive and a very seamless user experience :
The user experience of navigating the app is very simple and clean. It doesn;t feel like too many things going on and gets the user overwhelmed. Although the app has over 450+ different types of workouts, it is very intuitive when it comes to filtering what you need. It has a very detailed filtering capability to choose workouts from different intensity, equipment required, how much time it takes, to different format such as whiteboard workouts, trainer guided etc. Even before starting any new workout, you can view the exercises and reps you need to perform for how long. The workouts are very minutely detailed so you have a clear idea of what you are getting in for and have a high quality UI.
App incentives you:
The app also incentivizes you to keep up with your workouts, whether you follow a training plan or not—the programs go in stages, so it’s satisfying to check off each step you complete, and you get “badges” for streaks and trying new workouts. Nike’s app also offers push notification reminders (which you can turn off) to prompt you when it’s time to do a workout.
To summarise, I absolutely love this app! As a user navigating the app and selecting the type of exercies is very clear and easy. Easily customizable plan and guided for different levels of complexity and user friendly. Would recommend this app to anybody who's wanting to start getting in shape but doesn't know where to start.
How would you improve it?
Lack of social aspect: just adding friends but nothing more to it. If they introduce a competitive leaderboard feature to keep you motivated and going to train along with friends.
A little more detailed workout tracking: this would be helpful who workout regularly to know much time and weight they have lifted in a week. NTC shows monthly progress.
The product: carb manager
This is an application for the low carb diet seekers you can enter your macros and the app shows you how much intake you have left for the day according to your settings. Once you enter the ideal weight and your current weight and if you want to lose weight or keep it as is, the app calculates accordingly and gives you the timeline and daily calorie intake. You can also
-track the weight loss
-find the recipes and weekly meal plans
-create your own recipes
-keep the daily log of water consumption, daily activities etc.
This is a freemium app.
Before talking about the fav product I would like to mention what is a good application for me:
- Innovative: ppl have been seeking diets without knowing the macros of the foods or it was hard to know the carb, protein, fat of the products. This app has solved this problem significantly.
- Useful: you can always change the macros and it has both web and mobile applications and you can even scan the food at the market to see if it is keto friendly or not
- Efficient: you can create the groups to talk about some specific issues i.e. dairy intolerance and how to tackle it etc. IT creates its own community
Goal: to adapt ppl to low carb lifestyle(engagement) and increase the rev of the app.
But there are some points that might be helpful for the ppl who are seeking low-carb lifestyle.
Pain point 1: help people to adapt their life to keto lifestyle and increase the retention rate
Pain Point 2: keep them motivated and provide them easier options since most of the time you have to cook by yourself on keto. i.e.hard for travellers etc
Pain Point 3: sometimes the macros are entered wrong because the food can be edited by the users.
Solutions:
1- Create live sessions how to cook some foods or give some trainings how to follow the keto lifestyle
2- This app could have a partnership with the food delivery companies so that you could plan your whole week and it could send you the weekly meals
3- People are leaving the app after they are done with the weight loss. In order to keep them motivated, people can share their pictures with the community like before/after and it could motivate them
4- The app algo should be updated and there should not be so many entries for the same product i..e. diet coke . at least it could start with the frequently used products ex: egg and should be verified sign for the foods if those verified by Carb Manager
5- Sometimes so hard to find the keto products on the web or feels like no need to search a product on amazon, Walmart etc. So there might be a marketplace through this app only for the keto lifestyle products like bulletproof coffee etc.
Priorities/MVP:
| Impact | Effort |
Live sessions with chefs | H | H |
partnership with the food delivery companies | H | H |
share their pictures | M | M |
Algo to clean up the multiple entries | M | L |
Marketplace | H | H |
MVP: I would suggest start with live sessions with chefs so that we can keep the community engaged with the app and increase the retention rate. Before moving to the keto lifestyle, we need to educate them
Tradeoff: I would then move to the second part but since it is the partnership, CarbManager should find the partner company, change the app design accordingly, there should be commission/pricing calculation before launch.. so many steps but worth it.
Marketplace can be the other next step since this takes time to implement and our main goal is to increase the retention rate
I would think about sharing the pictures, there might be ML applied to this but still it may not catch, and we don’t want ppl to share their inappropriate pictures.so I would remove this part for now.
Metrics:
DAU/MAU of users – north star metric
How may ppl signed up for the live sessions
How long they stayed in the live sessions
What is the feedback from the users
What is the revenue from the live sessions if the live sessions based on a subscription model
My favorite app is Planta. Let me tell you why. First, I’ll explain what the product does at high-level and its business objective. Second, I’ll outline the target users and their problems. And finally, I’ll explain how the product solves those problems better than competitors and why that makes it my favorite product.
Product Description & business objective: Planta is a B2C app available on iOS and Android with the mission of helping users “Never Kill a plant again.” Planta offers a free version as well as a monthly and annual paid membership. Free Planta users will be able to log all their plants, get plant care reminders when it is time to water based on local weather and seasons and get helpful tips on watering techniques. The Paid membership comes with additional features like a light meter to make sure the room you put your plant in has optimal light, a plant scanner to identify plants, fertilizing, potting, misting and pruning care reminders and a plantcare chat bot to help troubleshoot issues with your plants.
Planta relies on upgrades to the paid tier and subscription renewals to generate revenue. As such, their business objectives are upgrading free users to paid and retaining paid users.
Target Users and their problems: Since I’m a paid Subscriber, I’ll focus on premium app users. There are several key problems users like me face
Volume of plants: They have so many plants it is hard to keep track of how to care for them each
Plant Health: If a plant isn’t doing well, it is hard to tell why and if that is normal seasonal change
Plant Information: When getting a new plant, sellers often don’t provide much information beyond the light it needs
How Planta solves these problems better than competitors:
Planta solves these problems better than their competitors in several ways:
User Problem | Planta Solution | Competition |
Volume of plants | Users can search by category or plant name and easily log new and existing plants. They also receive daily push notifications and task icons on their app to remind them of tasks. Finally there is an easy to navigate and satisfying check-off task-list to see what care tasks need to happen that day. This helps me so I never forget to water, mist, fertilize, prune or even repot my plants. The push notifications also keep me engaged and returning to the app daily. | Alternative solutions like google search and writing down care tasks in a calendar require you manually search each plant and it’s care needs to track the appropriate timing for each plant. |
Plant Health | There is a “Planta Doctor” chat bot that takes users through key questions about the plant symptoms in order to identify the most likely issue and care plan to nurse your plant back to health. Additionally, users are prompted to input monthly progress updates for each plant including pictures that they can look back on past month and year progress updates to understand if the plant is going through normal seasonal changes. I love these features because it helps me feel confident I’m giving my plants the right care to make them better and reminds me of the value of the planta app when it is time to renew my subscription. | Plant books can provide similar information but you would need to keep track of all the scientific names of your plants in order to understand the issues you are seeing. Additionally, instead of focusing on just the symptoms your plant has, you have to read through all possible issues to find the one that seems to be the fit. |
Plant Information | Planta makes it easy to find a new plant by providing several search options - using a photo to identify the plant, searching by plant category or searching by name. It then provides all the care information needed for the plant. Once you identify the optimal conditions for the plant, including the level of light it needs, you can use the built in light meter to identify the room in your house that is best suited for the new plant. | While blossom (another plant care app) provides detailed information on plant care that is easy to use and search. They don’t have a built in light meter to ensure you put your plant in the right room for it’s light needs. |
Why that makes it my favorite product:
Planta is my favorite app because it solves several key pain-points for me - it helps me remember when and how to care for my many plants with notifications that keep my coming back daily, eases my stress when a plant isn’t doing well by helping me troubleshoot the symptoms and makes it easy for me to learn how to care for my new plants. All these features lead to a high level of engagement and value perception that keep me retained as a paid member.
How I would make it better:
Currently, you can scroll through monthly photos of your plants to see how they have changed over time, while this is useful, I would create a timeline version of my plant health to more easily identify seasonal trends. This feature would remind me of the long term value of my paid subscription and aid in Planta’s retention objectives.
The framework I will use to solve this problem is:
- Pick a product/ app that I love and explain it
- Explain why I use it? How does it weigh against its competitors?
- Select 3 design principles and critique the product according to those design principles to explain why it's a good product
My favorite product is Splitwise - It's an app that allows users to keep track of their split expenses. A user can just go in and upload an expense and select users that expense needs to be divided with. The app automatically tracks how much you owe/ are owed by your friends on the app over a period of time.
Their monetization model allows them to earn revenue through ads (free users) and membership (paid users).
Its competitors are:
1. Keeping a track of expenses yourself: This was the earlier method and was very tiresome to keep track and follow up with people on the money they owe you.
2. Apps like Venmo: Venmo is a great app for a money transfer but only allows for payment and not for the splitting of expenses.
3. Competitors like Settleup: These apps require you to have your fellow friends on the app as well, and because Splitwise has such a wide user base, it becomes the top choice for anyone.
I would like to use the 3 following design principles to critique the app:
- Useful: Does the app solve a purpose?
- Usability: Is it easy to use?
- Good UI: Is the UI intuitive and
Useful: The app is useful because it allows me to keep track of my expenses, which was painful to do manually before this. It also has additional useful features likes it sends you monthly reminders asking you to clear your outstanding balances and has now integrated with Venmo to facilitate easy money transfer.
Usability: The app is very easy to use and it's a 2 step process for each transaction. All you have to do is add an expense > select your friends and select who made the payment. The rest of the calculation is done by Splitiwse itself.
Good UI: The UI is very intuitive. They have 2 separate grids that show you a list of outstanding balances by group and by individual friends. It also summarizes the money you owe in red on the top of every grid, bringing it to your attention. The UI isn't clumsy and makes it easy to follow for a new user.
If I were further asked what I would like to improve in the app:
Suppose I split a bill at a restaurant, right now I have to upload each item separately, select friends for each item split the tax accordingly. And each of these is a pain point. With Splitwise's pro version, they have solved the first point. They allow you to scan a bill and automatically convert it into a list of items, so that you don't have to upload each one individually.
But I would like to propose a solution to the other two points:
1. When a bill is uploaded, automatically scan and detect the other people in the room who have the app. Show them a notification asking them to select the items they want to contribute to. This saves the effort where one person has to individually select people for each item.
2. When the amount is divided, Splitwise should automatically calculate and add the tax for each item. This can be done by either detecting the tax rate of that state or just checking what percentage of the total cost the tax is, and calculating it similarly for each item on the list.
This is a good question to be answered using the Rule of Three, adding improvements in the end. Therefore, I would use the following approach to answet this question during the interview.
Critical point: this is a personal answer, so I will focus on asnwering from my perspective. I believe that's what a recruiter wants to see, if you can put yourself on the user's shoes and explain your favorite product with reasonable points.

My favorite product is Whatsapp, because it solves the problem of communicating with people I care about, offers an excelent experience while using it, and provides other valuable benefits that make my life better on a daily basis. Moreover, there are still plenty room for opportunities of improvements at Whatsapp that will make my life even easier in the future.
1) Firstly, Whatsapp enables me to communicate with my parents who live in another country by messages or calls. It's simple, free, and the quality of calls are very good. I am deeply connected to them even though I am far away.
2) I care about the easiness of using Whatsapp, because I can take actions, send a message or pictures, or give calls, using 2 clicks at maximum. This makes my life easier, because I spend less time finding the action, thus saving time for other valuable things I have to do life. For instace, the simple "pin feature" allows me to send messages to people much faster.
3) Finally, there other features that helps me a lot. For example, the ability to foward many pictures and/or videos to many people at once allows me to communicate with my family while I am travelling. Again, I am able to be more connected than ever with them.
I can think of many improvements in the product, but two of them would change my way to use the app. The first one is a filter of unread messages, because sometimes I forget to answer people and it's very hard to find them later. The second one would be the possibility to organize my chats into folders. Both ideas focus on management of the chats.
These are the reasons for Whatsapp being my favorite product.
Kite is a broking platform that essentially helps users trade in stocks/commodities. It also offers its APIs for other developers to leverage its platform as a service.
I like Kite -
1. Extremely easy to understand and use - Kite has a very simple, uncluttered, easy-to-the-eye interface that makes it extremely easy to buy and sell stocks compared to other brokers. The interface, although has had minor improvements, but has remained majorly the same which has kind of inculcated a habit.
2. High Utility - I find it very high on the utility front when I consider the entire ecosystem that Kite (Zerodha) has slowly carved out which go beyond just helping me submit orders/trades to learning about trading ( via Varsity) to trying out possible investment strategies ( Via Sensibull).
3. Innovation - Kite has always had big eyes set on innovating the space. They disrupted the traditional broking setup by leveraging technology to have a zero-brokerage on delivery trades. Of late, they were the first broker to have the market depth of 20 orders shown and updated real-time for each stock. The Sensi-bull platform is another innovative by-product that offers an extremely easy way-out for users to try, test and deploy investment strategies
For all these reasons, Kite is my favourite product.
Clarifying questions
- Just for my understanding if there any particular dimension youre looking for WRT my fav product - personal or work related? Im assuming personal
- Request for time to think
- I follow the particular structure
- Rule of 3 + examples of how it fits your persona since it helps connect the appeal/use case to you
I love infotainment because I learn something in the process - it might be something work related or generally interesting in a space im interested in for example - I love reading up about start ups , how they got started or new start ups that are coming up
Which is why I spend a lot time listening to pod casts and Id have to say pocketcasts is my fav app for the following 3 reasons
1) useful - Im able to learn something new potentially daily and also get entertained in the process, pocketcasts allows me to quickly review and discover content Ive signed up for
2) easy to use: It's easy to use if you talk about the core feature (playback controls) or even the innovative features (which is my next point)
3) innovative controls WRT playback: While in theory podcasts can play on any audio player it has its nuances for example -
1) Audio boost : often the voice of the host is not clear so it allow you to boost voice easily through a setting,
2) skip pauses: podcasts frequently have long pauses, this allows you to skip pauses and learn more easily
3) integration with ecosystem: podcasts tend to be longer than say music so the same controls do not apply to podcasts player - an example being the 'next track' funcationally works as move forward by x seconds in case of podcasts which is a neat integration and allows me to skip show ads without open the app
4) playback speed: users can set up playback speed defaults as per their learning /processsing speed allowing you to do more with less time
Product: Google Tasks
Here are the elements I will touch on: Vision & North star metric, Strategic themes, relevant personas, user journey & pain points, and possible solutions based on business goal and impact.
I use Google tasks almost every day. Outside of being a regular user, I am also excited about the problems they are solving concerning allowing their users to be more productive (vision of Google tasks).
Because they operate in a relatively crowded space, where the access to a basic feature like a “to-do list” is ubiquitous, I suspect they have doubled down in three areas: Cross-platform accessibility to google tasks on mobile and the web (Strategic theme 1), in one click on the most closed Google products (Gmail, google docs, Google Calendar). The management of tasks by multiple lists (Strategic theme 2), the possibility to organize tasks inside a list (Strategic theme 3) to move the needle on efficient tasks management. I would suspect that a key metric to measure progress toward the efficient tasks management goal is the number of the unique list created, per user (North Star Metric).
What I like about Google Tasks is that it solves an important pain point for me. As an individual, my use case for a to-do list app is primarily to organize separately the things I have to do around different initiatives I have to take in the same day or same week: professional tasks, learnings with courses to take, books to read, jobs to apply, chores, Immigration documents, etc…(user journey). Which is different from business or premium users paying $3 monthly (Persona). I don’t want to have to create a single list for everything, and then only come and check done. It is not efficient to know how I managed my time, and view my progress on all my initiatives that sometimes are completely unrelated (Pain Point).
The “create list” feature has been beneficial for my work and productivity because I have the ability to create in 2 clicks a list for every initiative. Then simply add the related tasks to do with or without a due date. So that I will be able to check my progress on each initiative in one view by swiping the lists from right to left. The problem here is that after a certain period, the lists start to accumulate and the only option available is to delete the list. For example, for a user like me in constant search of a room for improvement who used to read his notes of the past 2 to 3 years, deleting those tasks achievements is deleted data that could be useful for self-growth. (Pain Point).
If I were the PM for the “create list” feature I would add the ability “to archive” past or completed lists. Maybe for a certain period depending on the resources available within the company (database) or the business goal. I would have A/B test those options. Anyway, as a user would have the ability to check the old list completed, click the 3 column button at the bottom and select archive (Solution). My home will be less overwhelmed, and I would have the possibility to add more lists and see the past lists archived with the tasks completed and feel motivated to pursue this path and create more lists. This would likely drive the north star metric up to the right and benefit Google mission – organize and make data accessible. Maybe the company don’t want to invest in a separate database, or the reach of this feature and his impact is relatively small. I would have run an experiment (a/b test) with a small archived button to see. Maybe it would have been interesting for premium users? If the business goal is revenue (business goal), I will do research with other teams to know the optimal period of months to store the archived list and find pricing. Also, I found some users on Playstore asking for a “list sort” feature. Which is available with some competitors. It might be worth investigating in line with the business goal.
Clarifying question: Physical product or Online product?
Follow below Framework
Physical/Online -> Tell the Name & what's it for -> Use Case -> Why it's good -> Potential Improvement -> Competitors
My Favorite Product: Venmo mobile payment service
It's elegantly designed, mobile first solution to solve a particular problem.
Use Case: Day-to-day small value of payments. It really differs from larger bills and for that Banks' wire is recommended. Venmo account holders can transfer funds to others via a mobile phone app
Audience: Venmo is trying to tackle day to day payment interaction with your peers/friends. E.g., splitting meals, house rent, watching movie/sports. It's targeted for those people who are engaging with peers constantly and it's not B2B solution. Young crowd, teenagers or even adults can pay to their friends & peers.
Peer to peer or friend to friend payments.
Pain Points that Venmo Solves: Transfers/requests money digitally by configuring bank accounts Debit cards. Simple UI. No charge for payments except for credit cards. Find people easily - integrates with phone contacts, you can choose to integrate with Facebook contacts, emails, phone #, QR codes.
Introduced new functionality - Crypto currency
Improvements: Recurring payment feature would be helpful. Currently there's no option for repeated payments and you must repeat the same process for recurring payments.
Competitors: PayPal, Square or Apple Wallet are certainly competitors. PayPal is more for B2B payments. Venmo is targeted for teenagers & young crowd who want to share very small amounts with great security.
Clarification Question:
Is this a product which I personally use and like? Or something in the market which I believe is good
software or hardware product?
tech or non-tech product?
My favourite product would be google photos. Google photosis an amazing product to store, organise and search all your photos in one place.
I like this product for 3 main reasons:
Storage and Share
All photos are always stored on cloud, I am never anxious about losing any, sometimes my phone has crashed and I have lost photos, or when I have switched phones, so I always sync all my photos to them now
consolidates all my photos taken across different devices, and even photos I want to download from the internet or if someone has shared with me
Share photos with friends after a trip, or if you want to show them your trip or memory photos
Organisation and Search - Google aces search and it has brought that power to photos
All photos are accessible from one place- any device which has access to internet
Google does a great job at understanding what the search is for - it is very intuitive
Utility - if I am looking for a document or id card etc
Personal - if I want to look up something, and have a vague memory but want to see it better, like maybe a “red dress”
Reminiscence - reflecting on photos of places I have visited, like the ‘beach’ etc - or a specific past memory / experience like “surf”
Innovation
New feature for memories, trip summary, “growing up so fast” features
User delight - Feel good from memories. Feels valued and loved - from the compiled videos of things like ‘growing up’, ‘trip to’
Compared to competitors it has the best organisation and search tool
Tradeoff:
- always need internet access when accessing photos which are not in cache in device being used
How would you improve this product
Clarify -
am I the PM for Google photos and i need to improve it?
what is my improvement goal? is it user experience?
Around privacy - on syncing, it syncs all photos, on the other hand it is difficult to select each and every photo to sync, if we could have something which is more intuitive on which photos to sync and which ones to not- like dont upload these kind of photos - say which has screenshots etc
Auto add to shared album for a person, sometimes the recognition is wrong, or if i don’t want to upload that
(Honestly the Product I like are Whatsapp and Facebook for obvious reasons, but If I tell this without adding salt, you know the results)
So, as an aspiring PM, I would like to answer this question showing my interest in an out of Box product.
My Favorite Product is InShorts. Now, maybe interviewer isnt aware of the Product so, I will give some summary:
1. Summary: InShorts in a Mobile App, where you can read News Headlines in just a small 60 words paragraph. You also have an option to share news with someone through whatsapp/email/Message etc. It is free for download and viewing. You do see ads in between, which can be swiped. You may set in Language of your choice (Hindi, English).
2. Reasons why I like it:
-Usefulness: Yes, it is useful for Personas who do not have time to go over complete news paper
-UI and UX: UI is simply and crisp, Read a news, keep swiping down. UI has minimum disturbing elements which keeps the usefulness intact
UX: In that small paragraph you get complete jist, and most of the times, you need not read complete news. Unlike many other sites where you see just few lines and the moment real news is coming, they ask you to click on read more. Annoying that is.
Skip ad by just swiping, Share a news in single click, change language, engaging pics
-Lifetime of purpose: This app has a purpose which is never gonna end. So long there is news, app could stay, given it stay competitive
3. Improvements I see in it:
Feature | Effort | Impact | Priority |
Bookmark an ad for later viewing | Low | High | P1 |
Share the image | Medium | Low | P2 |
Options on long press (Done show news like this, Report news, Show More in this category ) | Medium | High | P1 |
Multilingual support (Regional Languages) | High | High | P2 |
4. Summarize: Based on High Impact, low effort, we can choose these new additions:
-Options on long press (Done show news like this, Report news, Show More in this category )
-Bookmark an ad for later viewing
My favorite product is Headspace.
Summary of the product:
Headspace is an app for guided meditation and mindfulness. It teaches you how to meditate, how to sleep better, and even recently how to exercise. They have a big library of courses to personalize the users’ experience - like if they are looking to reduce stress or gain better focus.
What problems does the product solve & how:
It is especially useful for users who are just starting their meditation and mindfulness journey. A lot of people don’t know where to start and find it very intimidating. But Headspace makes it very approachable with their cute design and step by step guidance. I especially like how they create a daily schedule for me, personalized to my needs. This includes more than just meditation, but a plan for waking up and doing a breathing exercise in the morning, watching a motivational video in the afternoon, and a wind-down in the evening. It’s all packaged up nicely for me.
Compare to competition:
There are lots of meditation apps out there, like Calm. But Calm’s courses are a little looser, while Headspace courses are very well-structured, which makes it a much better choice for a novice meditator.
Areas for improvement:
I think that’s also how I would improve Headspace. Once an occasional meditator graduates to a casual or power meditator, then they cancel their subscription. I would try to create journeys for the more experienced meditators as well.
My Favourite Product is Whatsapp
Whatsapp is a messaging app available freely for android and iOS users. It allows user to send text and voice messages or video calls.
Whatsapp solved the problem of communication via internet. Before that people used to communicate via sms.
Reasons Why I Like:
1. Useful : A very useful app where people can communicate to user from any country and they don’t need any ISD connection and they can connect with their friends and family from any country.
2. Innovative : Whatsapp always comes up with innovative features to engage and acquire new users. Some of them are:
a. Enabling users to record a voice message and share. This has impacted huge customer base who are not very good in typing like users in the age group of 45 to 60 and users belonging to 3 tier cities.
b. Whats app web feature where user can easily connect the whatsapp on their laptop just by scanning the QR code which is very innovative. It gives the end user the flexibility to use whatsapp easily through their laptop
3. Easy to use : Just can add users by mobile number and start communicating with their friends and well wishers easily.
What do you mean by Improvement? Is it Engagement and Acquisition? You Choose
As Whatsapp already has a 2 bn of userbase so acquisition is not what we should focus on. We should ideally focus on the engagement part.
User Group
1. Kids who are in school and parents give them a little permission to communicate in whatsapp because their school groups are created and they need to interact with their teachers. They just have little permission to interact.
2. Young adults – Who are communicating daily with their friends, family etc and they have a daily habit to interacting with their friends. They are now moving to diff platform like snapchat telegram etc because whatsapp lacks in fun way of communicating with their peers.
3. Elderly People – Those who are recently get in to the platform to connect with their loved ones They always want to be close with their loved one as they are missing them as now people are living in far places and they are in their busy schedule or diff timezones. And they are also facing difficulty in communicating because they don’t know how to communicate, what other person is trying to say, what to respond etc.
I will select Elderly people as they are facing issues in engaging with the platform as they don’t know how to respond. There is a gap there and what’s app is to connect the people around the corner and for this audience that learning gap is there which result in to less engagement in the platform.
Customer Journey
Missing the family > Launch the app > received message to the closed one> waiting for the revert > close the app
Pain Points
1. They miss their close one but get disheartened when they can’t connect with them because that person is not available.
2. They don’t know what to respond to any message.
3. They don’t remember the dates if in whatsapp group someone sent about any event. As now majorly people sent about any event on whatsapp .
4. Because of these emoji’s they don’t understand what other person is trying to say.
I would like to Prioritize 1,2,3.
Solution
1. Although we already have the option of video call but because of different time zone or unavailability of that person they won’t be able to connect . So we can Video Chat option. They can record and send the video chat to their loved ones. Once other person would be available he will respond in video format. So it will focus on extreme connection with your loved one.
Happiness – High, Impact – High, Effort - Low
2. Interpreter that would guide them what to respond . If any message has been sent and they don’t know what to respond then that interpreter will read that last message and suggest the reply options to the user.
Trade off : Whatsapp is end to end en-crypted
Impact – High, Effort - High
3. If user received any invitation for an event then provide an option to directly add it in to the calendar.
Impact – Medium, Effort – High
I would prioritize the first solution to provide Video Chat functionality. A single button click where they can connect with their loved one and no dependency on anybody’s availability.
Metric:
Awareness :
1. % of user who use that feature atleast once
Engagement
1. % of users using this feature daily /weekly/monthly
2. Amount of data being sent and received by user on daily/weekly/month
My favourite product is the iPhone.
Description
iPhone is a smartphone developed by Apple. It is a premium model phone bought by those looking for brand value. iPhone uses the IOS operating system and is know for is superior quality and durability. The phone is targeted for premium users. Also, those who use iPhone generally show loyalty towards it for its brand and quality.
This is just a high-level description of the product and why I like it. I will now pick the premium user (putting myself in the same bucket) group and list what such users look for in a phone and map that to Apple. I will also provide suggestions of how it can improve.
Features what premium users looks (assumption cost is no bar). And these are loyal customers because they are making an investment of a considerable amount and want a seamless experience.
- Brand
- Quality
- Durability
- Features
Apple provides all this in the iPhone and it is user friendly because of its design.
- Brand value – the look and feel really amazing and lives up to a premium phone (glass finish, sturdy gorilla glass for screen, variety of colours)
- Quality – the touch screen is of highest quality (capacitive), the processing speed (never hangs even with multiple apps)
- Durability – it is value for the money we pay as it lasts longer than any other brand. Also, Apple has a scheme of replacing old phones with the latest model.
- Features – camera, memory and storage (variety of options and iCloud), support for multiple Apps, AI (Siri), carrier options are in-built during purchase
List of features that I like –
- Camera – equivalent to a DSLR
- Storage – icloud
- AI feature – Siri
The main thing me as a user is looking for is quality (value for money) and durability and the iPhone caters to this. And they have built it in such a way that once a user buys and uses this, then they get hooked and are loyal to it. Apple has spared no expense in making this a high-quality product which people can use as a mini-computer (processing speed is also amazing)
Improvements
Few things which I personally as a user would like to see improved.
- Switching and getting used to an iPhone is cumbersome as its interface is completely different from all brands. Apple can make the interface a little less complex. Though the features are amazing, it takes a little time getting used to.
- The maps feature. Though Apple maps are good, they are not as accurate as Google maps. The phone is of great use to me except for this feature.
To summarize, being a premium user I like the iPhone because it provides the three main things I am looking for in a phone – Brand, quality and durability.
Interviewer = I, Myself = me
Me: Are we interested in a mobile app or a physical product or a desktop website or a service product?
I: Any of your choice
Me: Great! I will pick Mobile App called Hinge. It's a dating app just like plenty others out there.
I: Ok. Go for it!
Me: Give you some context, I think it be good to discuss who the users are, what Hinge's goal is atleast per their mission statement and some of the pain points that I know of for people who are seeking to date and find a soul mate. That will help me convey my story of why I like a product. In life, you always like something or not like something based on you thinking it solves your purpose or not. So it's a similar approach here. ARe you ok with it?
I: Great approach.
Me: thanks. Since Hinge is a new company and not as big as Match.com brands, it makes sense for Hinge to focus on Customer Acquisition. The best way to attain that is by focusing on customer success. Customer success will lead to word of mouth marketing and will get more customers. At one point, Hinge can then start monetizing it by implementing varios features but keep it free for now till it ges enough customers.
Hence, Hine's slogan is "An app designed to be deleted". I like that slogan because it tells me it's intent on helping people find someone and be done with dating apps unlike other apps which I think is too focused on beinging customers back on and on, a refill business model. It also tells me Hinge is focused on long term serious relationships. This ties into various different user gorups a dating app could have. 1) Seriously looking for long term relaitonships 2)Causual daing and flings for fun 3) Extra Marital relationship dating
We can slice these user groups even more or we can even think of more user groups. IT seems that Hinge's slogan leans more to #1 user group. So let's focus on those. This means, these people have been through phases of life of just casual dating, etc and are now certain age where they are getting serious. It also means, they have had plenty of bad experiences thus far and have started forming opinions about things. That means pain points.
Here are few and some of them I have heard about from others, some I have experienced myself being in the dating world for years, and some are based on user research I have conducted by going online and talking to singles and interviewing them.
Pain Points:
1) Tired of same old profiles to fill up and tired of reading same old profiles of others
2) Insecurty creeps in (more so true for women. About 70% of women feel insecure online)
In hte interest of time let's focus on tehse two vs. trying to come up with more.
I like Hinge because:
1a) To address this, Hinge profile enables users to choose various topics such as "the weirdest fear you have in life" "the most adventurous thing you hvae done in life" "What's one thing in life you can't live without", etc. this makes every profile unique and there is something diff to explore in every profile. This drives users back on the app again and again in need of exploration and uniqueness to be found. It's like scavanager hunt.
1b) It also allows someone to specifically like a pic or comment within the profile vs. other apps where you can swipe or write a message when liking but can't specifically like something within a profile. This feature provides for a ice-breaker / conversation starter in the hindsight.
2a) Hinge addresses this by enbaling people to do a facetime call from using the app. That means girls dont have to share their number and keep their privacy. This isn't available on other apps.
2b) It also allows for regular phone call from within the app. This isn't available on other apps.
I do think there are possibilities of improvement such as embedding more AI enabled features whereby users are provided profiles based on tracked acvitity of what type of profiles they seem to like (ex: humans typically like certain face type so track that and suggest based on that to individuals, or enable personality tests and then match people based on tracking what personality types they have had success with, and then there are plenty other aspects where AI could be used as well. I could go over those if you like).
Overall, I like Hinge because it has focused on segment of users who are intent on finding a real serious relationship, a segment that is not as wavering in their heads hopefully and know waht they want out of life and then have focused on really thiknkign how to do things differently in a way that will help the customer attain their goal.
My favorite product is (are) Robo Advisor for financial management. I will take a specific company SigFig for the remainder of the write-up, but the underlying fundamentals apply to all of the applications in that class.
Background:
1) General understanding of the financial market among the public is increasing.
2) Spectisim about financial analytics has grown since the two major market crashes in 2000 and 2008. In most cases, the analyst provided no better insight into the market than an average educated individual.
3) Analysts tend to use lots of jargon words and unable to expand the concept. i.e., Financial advisor recommends 10 Cash, xx Bond, yy Internal.... blah ... But cannot or does not share as to why. Has anyone explained efficient frontier theory? Probably no. Also, likely the audience is not interested in many cases.
4) There is a deep distrust that the analyst/advisor is not looking for you but himself with high fees or commission on the funds.
5) Last but not least, your facetime with an advisor is short and expensive. Yes, their fees for managing your funds are high 1% to 2%, with hardly any better than investing an index for nothing.
Frustrated with all the above, many people who attempt to manage their portfolio only fail after some success in good time. Without the full knowledge, people do not set up for difficult times. Well, you know there were plenty of millionaires in 1999, all to disappear in the post-2000 crash.
In addition to the above sentiments, the key inflection point was with technology (Cheap computing and the advent of AI/ML in recent years) and trust in online services, acceptance of subscription models.
SigFig understood these factors and started the Robo Finance Advisor platforms. They are democratizing the financial market knowledge. Robo Advisor market is going to grow while the human-managed portfolios for common use is on the decline.
Product Features/offering:
What does SigFig offer :
- The Freemium model opens up the platform for the public to try out without the need to commit.
- Enables the people to manage their funds and provide the tools needed and advice/guidance (limited ) for free. The outcome of different investment models
- Also, provide managed service for an account up to a certain $$ amount. The public can try out Sigfig managed accounts for free. A good customer acquisition model.
- Clear and transparent to customers, you can see everything being done on your accounts, daily and why.
- A low management fee as compared to a financial advisor, who is likely using a similar software behind.
Highlights: Ease of use, Transperant and price competative, for most cases at par with human managed returns. Users have access to their data 24/7.
This is an awesome question. I know there are several amazing products out there, but my favorite product as of late is the SNOO bassinet by The Happiest Baby company.
If you are not familiar with the SNOO or not a new parent, let me briefly describe the product and its features.
Product Description:
The SNOO is a "smart" bassinet. It is designed to help new parents get their babies to sleep better and longer through the night as they start to get bigger. Many parents remember how it feels to be sleep deprived when trying to get their newborn to sleep after a feed, only to have to wake up in 30 mins to feed again. The SNOO is designed to mimic the experience a newborn went through in the womb, while minimizing the risk of SIDS.
It does this by building the following features:
- Gentle Rocking motion
- Integrated white noise machine
- Secured sleep sack
- Automatic adjustment of rocking and white noise
- As your baby fusses, the rocking speed increases and the white noise volume increases to get the baby back to sleep
When I look at the SNOO, I love it for three major reasons:
Usefulness/Utility:
The Bassinet solves the problem of improving the sleep of your newborn, which improves the sleep quality of the parents. This makes the product extremely useful as parents can help avoid burn out and sleep deprivation earlier. Additionally, the SNOO emphasizes safety by it's sleep sack. The sleep sack is secured to the mattress using clips. The clips ensure that the sack can't roll when the baby squirms, making it useful for newborn safety.
Innovation:
The SNOO is the most innovative bassinets on the market. The bassinet uses sensors to detect a childs fussiness. These sensors track the volume of the baby's cry and the frequency of the cry to decide if it needs to enable an additional level of soothing. This decision is taken automatically by the SNOO based off of historical cry data and settings by the parent in the app.
Understandable:
The product is extremely intuitive to use and put together. It takes about 5 minutes to set up and get rolling. The design of the sleep sack is as straight forward as it gets, and the app guides you every step of the way when you start by way of a wizard.
How would we improve it?
When you look at the SNOO as The Happiest Baby Company, it's evident that your goal as a business is to increase customer engagement since the bassinet is only usable by parents for up to the first 6 months of a baby's life. You want your customers to use this product as much as possible to increase referrals and recommendations.
Let's look at some potential missed pain points the SNOO can solve, given the target user persona of new parents.
Pain Point | Impact to User | Notes |
Climate control of the room | Medium | Ensuring a moderate climate for a newborn is critical to minimze discomfort |
Changing diapers in the middle of the night | High | Knowing when to change your newborns diaper is crucial to minimize the potential of diaper blowouts (very messy) |
Let's try to solve the changing diaper problem. Diaper blowouts are messy and not fun to clean. If the blow out is particularly bad, you will have to bathe your baby immediately. Now imagine having to do this at night.
Potential solutions:
Solution | Impact to User | Effort to build |
Build a weighing feature inside the bassinet to detect heavy diapers and send a push notification to the SNOO App | Medium | Medium |
Build a time based system notifying the parent to preemptiely change the diaper | Low | Low |
Build a diaperless system, where a baby sleeps in a sack without a diaper, integrating water to wash and a blower to dry. Detect a bowel movement or urination and clean accordingly | High | High |
Based off these solutions I'd pick the weighing feature as that is relatively easy to build and will at least detect a wet diaper and notify the parent to change. A wet diaper is more susceptible to diaper blowouts. Changing a wet diaper to a fresh diaper greatly reduces to chances of blowing out.
Measuring success:
The metrics I would use to measure how successful the weight feature is to increase customer engagment is:
- Amount of time spent in the bassinet with a wet diaper after detection
- Number of diaper blowouts (self reported)
- Average number of wet diapers detected and changed
Why?
1. Provides bird's eye view of my son's crib so I can see whether he is sleeping or lying down awake. Some other monitors provide side views so you can't actually tell if the child is sleeping.
2. Provides updates on when my child has reached certain milestones (e.g. falling asleep on his own), which reassures new parents their child is on track. If you're child is not meeting certain milestones (e.g. number of times the child wakes throughout the night), the Nanit provides how your child compares to other children at that age and what you can do to support your child in achieving the specified milestones.
3. Provides suggestions on how to enhance a child's sleep. For example, if your child is having trouble sleeping through the night, Nanit will recommend different ways to change the child's sleep environment to make it more conducive to having a good night's rest.
Overall, I really enjoyed the Nanit because I believe the monitor not only helped me safely monitor him while he was sleeping but it also provided information that ultimately helped my son sleep through the night.

Building it into a core habit
Lightweight streaks
Testing out community feature
Idea is to get others to meditate with you
What I’d Improve about it.
As mentioned above, the two areas I think they could focus most on is helping find topics that are well suited to you and helping you build meditation into a core habit.
On finding topics:
Have a way to check in with your emotions
Click a couple topic areas you’d be interested in
Titles can feel more personalized based on what you’ve done in the past
On building into core habit
Make streaks more prevalent
Remind you if you haven’t meditated that day
Follow friends on the app to see if others have meditated yet
Invite friends to meditate with you on a calendar basis
Calendar sync to add to your schedule
Impact on User | Ease | Overall
On finding topics | |||
Have a way to check in with your emotions | 3 | 2 | 6 |
Click a couple topic areas you’d be interested in | 2 | 2 | 4 |
Titles can feel more personalized based on what you’ve done in the past | 2 | 3 | 6 |
On building into core habit
Make streaks more prevalent | 3 | 2 | 6 |
Remind you if you haven’t meditated that day | 1 | 3 | 3 |
Follow friends on the app to see if others have meditated yet | 1 | 2 | 2 |
Invite friends to meditate with you on a calendar basis | 2 | 2 | 4 |
Calendar sync to add to your schedule | 3 | 3 | 9 |
So given this prioritization, the key things I would consider investing in is a calendar sync to make meditation a bigger daily habit and also make the recommendations feel more personalized based on goals that I have. I could even see that eventually expand into a larger goal setting feature for both mediators and instructors as a way to build a habit and help people feel a sense of accomplishment through spending time on Insight Timer.
My favorite product is Confluence by Atlassian. When I think about any product as favorite, it comes down to three key points.
1. Useful - Is the product useful and solving a key pain point?
2. Efficient - Is the product solving the issue quicker with less effort from the user
3. Innovation - Is the product solving the user problem in a new way that makes the user smarter
Useful- It is extremely usefeul in my daily official work as Product Manager. Whenever I have to create anything from full fledged product requirements to as basic as sprint reviews, Confluence takes care of all needs elegantly.
Efficient- It is very very efficient; the moment i'm done, i can share the link of page for review or by mailing people via Share option at top right hand side of the page or i can export whole page in .pdf/.do and take printouts to just walk in a meeting room with a cup of coffee to brainstorm more about the agenda/problem. Later one too, anyone wants to audit my work or asks me to do a KT or just needs something to update himself on any topic, i just point out to the confluence page.
Innovative- It has solved every issue related to documentation from my life as a PM. Gone are the days where I needed to create PRDs from scratch or follow the template share by organization/team etc. Now i go to confluence, CREATE the doc for every purpose, can depict whole business flow to simple decision hierarchhies by just some simple tweaking of available templates or many times that too isn't needed. Best part is they have listed all sections needed for every template with explanations of how to fill them, its like a checklist and i cannot go wrong on not covering any aspect of the deliverables.
Objective of application: To be the home for all the physical activities of athletes and be sports focused social media for athletes
I will breakdown my reasons under 3 different buckets - Usefulness, Ease of use, Innovation.
Usefulness:
1. Users will be part of offline running groups, cycling groups & they want to connect with fellow athletes, while keeping track of the activties and be connected
2. Users want to explore Segments when they are in a new town to explore the running/cycling spots
3. Users want to take up challenges to ensure they are regular with regards to their workout & they achieve their fitness goal
Ease of Use:
1. Strava has integration with multiple personal trackers & no need for human interaction to upload or create activities
2. Users can create their own segments from existing routes they have performed the activity on
3. Application tracks the progress Month on month, week on week making it easy for users to keep tab on their fitness levels
Innovation:
1. Strava has premium features around fitness tracking, which are not available in any of the other fitness applications such as Suffer score (Measuring physcial exertion basis heart rate), Relative effort (Measuring effort and normalizing across different activity types), Grade Adjusted Pace (Measuring the impact of elevation variation on the activity)
2. There are safety features to ensure athlete safety such as beacon, which tracks your activity & shares with another person of your choice
Since the user personas Strava presently targets are: Single athletes, Training groups. They can target few other personas, such as: Coaches and event organizers.
Some additional features they can implement to improve retention & engagement:
1. Virtual events: Event organizers can host sports events by scheduling the start time & the data received from all the athletes can be used to arrive at the leaderboard & managing prize/certificate distribution
2. Coach dashboard: Coaches can see the personal progress of each of the training athletes with access to granular data with regards to training activities.
