How I would approach this Facebook product design question.

Clarifying questions:

  1. By music experience, are you referring to listening to music, or talking about artists, or having a dialogue with their favorite artists like an äsk me anything" type of experience?
    • IVR - you know it's up to you.
  2. Is this supposed to be on mobile or desktop?
    • IVR - Totally up to you
  3. Any segment, as in is this targeted for music industry professionals or for music listeners?  You decide.
    • IVR - I can see this work for either segment, but its your choice
  4. OK last question - is this targeted for the US or for worldwide?
    • IVR - That's totally up to you, but since Facebook is a worldwide product you might want to take that into consideration
Goal:
Facebook's mission is to give ppl power to build communities and bring the world closer through connections.  In this sense, I believe the music experience needs to follow this principle, so it allows people to build additional connections and be able to engage over music.  The goal therefore is to engagement.

User Groups
I will look at several different user groups here based on a music experience:
  • Music listeners - those who like to listen to different music, and these users may use different variety of services like Spotify , Apple or Amazon music already for this purpose
  • Music producers - people who are deeply knowledgeable and have subject matter insights
  • Music artists - those who perform - they want to showcase their work and want to connect with fans, and promote what they do
  • Song writers or composers - people who actually write the music and pieces, and also deeply knowledgable in the industry
Based on the user groups above I would argue that since this is a Facebook product targeted for engagement, I would like to target the music listeners - this has the widest reach and there's an opportunity to offer something different for them.

Pain Points
Casual music listeners here can have multiple pain points and they can split into the following user segments:
  • Infrequent music listeners - these may not want to talk about their music experience as much as they don't really listen to them, and probably don't have much opinion to offer.  We will exclude this segment
  • Frequent music listeners - this group likely has a preference for what they want to hear and therefore has an opinion.  they likely will listen to a large variety of artists or even multipl genres
  • Highly obsessive music listeners - this can fall into the groupie denomination where they are obssessed with one or more artists and will likely to go to concerts or connect with them.    They have very strong opinions and likely use other ways to satsify their musical engagement needs.
Let's focus on the frequent music listeners therefore and here are their pain points:
  1. Listening to music is a very siloed singular experience - is there a way to share what they like to hear and to broadcast their music interests?
  2. Exploring new artists can sometimes be a leap of faith as they are usually comfortable with listening to one or a group they already follow.
  3. Switching or adding genres can be even a bigger challenge - they like what they hear already and not saying its impossible, but they can explore other genres
  4. They like cnnecting with their favorite artists but usually that can only be done in a concert type of setting or maybe at most through sites, twitter or even facebook pages.  But they are sometimes managed professionally and this feels like an artificial experience
From the above, and since this is a new experience I would like to focus on two pain points that stand out, and that's #1 and #2.  I think those are real and can be addressed with a product that can allow similar taste music listeners listen and share, and provide a forum for artists to engage with their listeners as well.

Solutions and prioritization

Using H/M/L for impact and level of effort, here's what I come up with

  1. A "room" for listening where it's an active conversation between folks who like the same artist or the same music - they don't need to share their faces but they can join as an avatar and just share and talk to each other - people may suggest new songs to explore for the same artists or evne suggest new artists to check out that are in the same genre (Impact - H, LOE - H)
  2. A VR experience with an artists  - an immersive experience where they can be in a virtual mini concert or talk of sorts.  This can be a way for casual listeners to really connect without trying to meet physically in person.  (Impact - H, LOE - H)
  3. A "chat" or live experience with their favorite artists - this is almost like Facebook Live except the users can ask real time questions based on getting their questions into a chat window.  Since we can use existing tech the implementation should be low, and impact here is better than engaging via FB pages but I think it's step down from the VR exp (Impact - M, LOE - L)
  4. A dedicated facebook watch for artists - so users can zero in on the artists they like on continuous playback and react to them - cna take advantage of existing tech however so really isn't new (Impact - L, LOE -L)
I would prioritize building #1 and then #2 above to address the pain points and also due to the fact they are different from the current offerings with the highest level of impact.  I feel they also drive the engagement goals since they are exactly geared to make new connections.

To summarize, the goal od the music experience product I propose is a cross platform vertical in Facebook that will drive engagement for music listeners.  I chose this user group based on the reach, and also the propensity that they will be open to making new connections to improve their listening experience.  I chose a couple of pain points (1 and 2) as I feel they are equally important to address a siloed experience and an easier way to connect with their favorite artists.  Finally i listed out and priortizied a couple of solutions: community room where listeners can join with avatars and chat with different users in the same room to discuss similar artist and genre preferences/ideas, and finally a VR meet the artist experience.

Things you did well:

  1. Followed a clear cut structure
  2. A good set of clarifying Questsions
  3. From User segments to Paintpoints to solutions and prioritization - Everything was easy to follow and inclusion of a moonshot idea (VR) made the solution set look very good
  4. A good summary to wrap up
Areas of Improvement:
  1. Personally feel that questions like "Any segment, as in is this targeted for music industry professionals or for music listeners" right at the begining will make u looked as someone who is kinda dependent too much at each stage. Also, taking an ownership style will be a better approach. For example, is instead of asking, "this targeted for the US or for worldwide?" state your assumption with a reason and ask their confirmation.
  2. Listing a set of success metrics could be a bonusfor your answer.
