Clarify Qs:

Is this for a Virtual Museum OR a Physical one or both? - Both

Is this app for both iphone/Android - both

What specific user group to target - Any

Geo-location-  within US

Goal: Any specific goal you have? - Increase engagement , Revenue improvement for museums, increase Referrals ..

I will focus on Increase in Engagement

User Groups:

  2. Children - Age groups 5-13

  3. Adults/Parents

  4. Teachers

  5. Elderly

  6. People with Special Needs

  7. Museum officials, Content Creators

  8. Volunteers

I will focus on the

Elementary/Middle School Children and their Parents

User Journey/Pain Points

I will be considering the journey of visiting a Science Museum during COVID times since children need to be engaged well and a virtual app could provide that education, creativity and stimulation for kids

  • Parents of Kids will download the app, esp if kids are too young

  • Kids can start browsing the various experiences/shows/exhibits they can be interested to purchase tickets for

  • Kids, maybe with help of parents, will select the exhibits to visit virtually OR try any interactive displays

  • Next will be purchase tickets and checkout

  • Parents/Kids get notified of the Time/date of the Shows/Exhibits/Interactive experiences, etc

  • They can also submit reviews/Feedback on those

  • They can share their experiences on social media

Pain POints:

  1. Displays / Exhibits for younger group of kids, with short attention spans, needs to be very interactive.

  2. In the absence of doing any hands-on experiments , Museum should think of creative ways to help kids learn science concepts

  3. Virtual Musuem should have way to promote their goods, gifts, in the absence of physical store front during covid

  4. Provide mechanisms to help retention and entice visitors,

Prioritize - 1, 2,4,3

Solution Ideas/Prioritization

Priority

Value/Benefit/Impact

Effort/Cost

1

  1. Provide the exact Duration, synopsis for each Exhibit or Show so that parent can decide if its suitable for their kids.

  • To engage Kids, use VR technology that is novel and kids can enjoy experiences. Also Augmented Reality (AR) solution once in-person visits re-starts

Creative ways:

  • Museums can tie up with schools to provide virtual Science Lessons/Experiments that kids learn from

  • Kids can volunteer - take some leadership, skill building roles, and showcase their creativity( e.g make something handson and post it, write a science blog/journal)

4

For repeat Visitors:

  • Museum can provide family annual membership signups

  • Special deals/discounts for occasions

  • Host a virtual science theme party for bdays, etc

  • Send sneak previews of new shows/exhibits

Virtual Store Front :

Provide a selection of toys, games, puzzles, books and other items for sale - have a browsing and selection

Parents can purchase items and get it shipped

Helps to increase revenue for musuems

Will go with 1,2, and 4 for MVP

Metrics:

% of DAU/MAU/WAU that sign up for memberships

% of DAU/MAU/WAU that write reviews and give ratings

% of DAU/MAU/WAU that share the reviews on social media.

Avg time spent on each exhibit/show

% Abandonment rate /exit rate Per exhibit/show

% of DAU/MAU/WAU that sign up for classes, volunteer

Clarification:

  • Can I assume the goal is to grow the user base? [Yes]
  • 1 museum or many museums? [You are the PM] then I will design for all museums in the country, to address more users.
  • Is this a mobile App? [Yes]
Users:
Multiple roles will be using this app, such as
  • Visitors
  • Museum Owner
  • Tourist Guides
Here I will be focusing on the visitors's need and requirements as they determins the success of the app. and in Particular I will focus on overseas visitors, as lots of museum visitors are from overseas and their requirements are a superset of the domestic users.
User Needs:
  • Before the visit:
    • Need to register a user account
    • Need to decide when to visit.
    • Need to make reservations or buy tickets.
    • Need to get notified when there are promotions.
  • During the visit:
    • Need to get introduction to interested items (voice or text).
    • Need to support multiple languages.
    • Need to plan the visit, like things to see  in this trip
    • Need to search for location of interested items and get guidance.
    • Need to get in-building route, to cover all the selected items efficiently
    • Need to join a guided tour
    • Need to hire a guide
  • After the visit:
    • See my timeline
    • See items that I've spent time with.
Prioritization:
I would like to prioritize the features based on how essential they are, as well as the complexity.
Will probably treat below as P0:
  • Before the visit:
    • P0: Need to register a user account
    • P0: Need to decide when to visit.
    • P0: Need to make reservations or buy tickets.
    • P2: Need to get notified when there are promotions.
  • During the visit:
    • P0: Need to get introduction to interested items (voice or text).
    • P0: Need to support multiple languages.
    • P0: Need to plan the visit, like things to see  in this trip
    • P0: Need to search for location of interested items and get guidance.
    • P1: Need to get in-building route, to cover all the selected items efficiently
    • P1: Need to join a guided tour
    • P2: Need to hire a guide
  • After the visit:
    • P1: See my timeline
    • P2: See items that I've spent time with.
    • P2: Get recommendation for next stop
    • P2: Write reviews.

Solution:

I will selectively cover a few key use cases, due the limited time.

For example, "get introduction of interested items". A few design choices:

* User can either input the item number or scan the barcode next to the item [I will prefer scan due to the convenience, also it gives more flexibility for museum owner to adjust locations]

* User can either use the app to connect to internet or allow user to download and use offline data package. [I will prefer to allow the offline use case, due to most overseas user might not have cheap internet plan]

Metrics:

Northstar metrics will be the MAU

additionally I will look at # of fulfilled visits, # of visits per user per year, CSAT, etc.

Summary:

In Short, I plan to develop an app, which can help the user to effectively plan their trips, enjoy their trip and keep their memory.

I like your structure and your pain points quite a bit, but I think you can expand more on the solutions in terms of level of effort and level of impact on which ones you should prioritize to build.  Also you should provide some drawbacks based on what you are building (i.e. well, if the app can provide such a great experience at getting tickets beforehand, that could deter users who may not have the app and still want to visit the museum)
