How would you select one particular zoom level for the MVP launch of the Google Maps mobile app?

You are PM for Google maps mobile app product. Assume this is a first of its kind product and there are no competitors. Now you are designing your product MVP and your lead TL comes to you to ask you to decide for MVP just one zoom level for the viewing of maps on cell phones. Why? Because of eng constraints, it is not possible to have multiple zoom levels for viewing of maps.  Question: What zoom level will you come up with? Why?

Clarification Questions:

What problem is the mobile app trying to solve?

What is the major use case?

1. Navigation (Routing from point A to B)

2. Search (for Point of Interests like restaurants..)

3. Social networking (locate your friends)

Google maps have Zoom levels 0 to 21, where 0 is the most zoomed out and 21 is the most zoomed in.

As a general rule of thumb, the first few levels are pretty much just the world map. At zoom 5, the continents and landmasses are the primary features. By level 10, the city details emerge. At level 15, the streets are clearly visible. And by zoom 20, the buildings are all rendered.

Depending on the use case(s) try to analyze which zoom level best meets your MVP needs with fixed Zoom.

For Example :

Entire City view
Zoom (15-17)
(6-8 street blocks)
17 - 19
(2- 3 street blocks per view)
Zoom 20

Areas you did well

1.       You do a fantastic job outlining the zoom levels and what they are good for.  This shows a really good understanding of the app and uses cases

2.       You lay out three clear uses cases

Areas of improvement

1.       I’d really like to see you use the full product design framework

a.       Ask more clarifying questions – they will lead you down the path

                                                               i.      Who is the primary user?

ii.      What is the primary use case?  Your answer may change based on this answer

iii.      When will we add the ability for other zooms- how does the answer change if the answer is never vs next month?

b.       Personas – you provide a view of the personas in the use cases, but the next step is to pick a persona which would have guided the rest of the answer

                                                               i.      Drivers – casual

                                                             ii.      Drivers – professional

                                                           iii.      Cyclists

                                                            iv.      Walkers

                                                             v.      Looking for …. Point of interest, restaurant, etc.

c.       Pick a persona – this would help the rest of your answer

                                                               i.      I’d like to focus on drivers – they are biggest group of users and we should optimize the app for them.

d.       User Journey – you skipped this – in this question – I agree

e.       Solutions – you do a great job of laying out the zoom levels and providing criteria for how to choose

f.        Pick and summarize – I pick zoom level xxx its best for driving and OK for walkers and cyclists.

g.       Metrics – I’d like to monitor the following metrics

                                                               i.      DAU

ii.      % of users using the map for driving vs walking vs cycling

                                                           iii.      DAU/MAU

                                                            iv.      Avg users per day/week/month

Keep up the work
