Product improvement question: How would you improve Discord?

What is Discord?

Discord is an instant messaging and digital distribution platform designed towards building communities.

Clarifying Questions

Do you want to improve the app or desktop version? Or improve developer tools? You can decide.

Any specific goal of improvement? Increasing engagement by acquiring more users

Goal

The goal of improvement is to increase engagement on the platform since Discord already has a huge number of users. Already at 100 million active users per month

User Types

  • Gamers

  • Non-Gamers

    • Business Users

    • Casual Users

We will target non-gamers, in that specifically casual users as this is a huge segment which can be targeted and already a lot of people from this category have started using Discord to join servers to chat on topics they are interested in.

Pain-points

  • A lot of non-gaming users would want to join new discord servers or communities while using the Discord App.

  • These users would want to be recommended discord servers to join based on what servers they have joined and what their friends have joined.

  • Adding the social angle, a lot of users on Discord would want to add friends more easily. Right now they need to know the user name and tag to add a friend.

  • Users should be able to give donations on Discord servers to show support.

We will focus on the top 3 pain points as they would most impact the engagement.

Solutions for Improvement

  • Users should be able to connect their Google or Facebook Accounts with Discord. Low impact Low effort

  • They should be able to search Discord Servers by Keywords on mobile app also and join those servers. - Low Impact Low Effort

  • While onboarding users should be asked what are their areas of interest. - Low Impact Low Effort

  • They should be able to see Recommended Discord Servers. The discord servers would be recommended to them based on interest and already joined discord servers. High Impact Medium Effort

  • They would also see a friends tab where they can see what discord servers their friends have joined. High Impact Low Effort

1 is a prerequisite to 5 and 3 is a prerequisite to 4

Priority based on impact vs effort will be as follows : -

1>5>3>4>2

Success Metrics

New servers or communities joined per user per week

Average number of servers or communities joined per user

Average Time spent on discord per user

Direct Messages sent or received on discord per user per week

Messages sent on channels on discord servers per user
