Describe the company
Facebook’s mission is give people the power to build community and bring the world closer together. Facebook has done with a number of products and offerings including but not limited
1. Facebook – Social Network
2. Market place – social selling
3. Instagram – social though imagery
4. Messenger and whats app – social communication
Brainstorm normally I’d have columns for effort and impact – they were all high so I killed the columns for space.
Idea | Amazon | Microsoft | Apple | Netflix | Company fit | |
Smart Speaker / assistant | yes | no | yes | Siri | No | FB sorta entered this market and seems to have given up – FB Portal – low assistant is about organizing your information not the information of the community low |
Streaming | Yes | No | Yes | No | Yes | Youtube has made streaming very social, music recommendations is very social – high |
Ecommerce | Yes | Direct | Direct + Shopping | Direct | no | FB has social selling but entering directly against the likes of amazon is different set of logistical challenges - low |
Cloud | yes | yes | yes | Icloud | no | While FB likely has the server capacity – cloud is not about communities low |
Education | no | LinkedIn learning | Announced two programs that they will offer that Google will accept as 4 years degrees | No | no | Education is about communities. Class are communities, degrees are communities. |
Gig economy jobs | Deliveries | no | no | No | no | While FB has the social groupings to identify gig workers the gig economy isn’t so much about bringing communities together as it is workers.
Low |
Recommendations
Lest rule out all the low company fits. That leaves Education and Streaming. Streaming has existing deep competition and high barriers of entry. Education has deep competition but from historic players. Education could be highly bringing together communities of people interested in the same subject, same degrees etc. The industry is ripe for tech revolution especially in light of covid and the lack of clarity if the existing cost structure is worth the ROI. Facebook bringing together communities of learners with the tech and the infrastructure to teach them has the real possibility of disrupting the billion(s) dollar education system and likely fits snuggly within Facebooks mission.
