Clarification:

Is it global or US : Global

Ignoring festival/holiday times and weekends

Formulae = ((total population) - (countries where youtube is not available)) * (% where internet is available) * (Segment of people, families cooking) * (% using youtube for videos)

Total Population = 7 Billion

Youtube not available = 3.5 Billion

% with internet connection = 60%

Remaining population = 2.1 Billion - rounded to 2 Billion

Assuming equal split by age and life expectancy of 60 years across globe

Each year then has = (2 billion / 60) = 33 Million approx

Kids - 0-10 wont be cooking = 330 Million

Teenagers = 11-20 = very few of them will cook, will be in dorms at home etc. less than 1% will cook, assuming .1% = 3 million will cook

20-30 = Staying alone/living-in etc. = 60%, 21 million eating out/delivery mostly few days of the week cooked, averaging and assuming 5% = 15 million, married = 40% , 12 million, 10 % will cook = 33 million, family of 3 1 person cooks = 11 million cooks

30-40 = cooking/married/families averaging =  75% cook = 230 million, 80% married 180 million, family of 3 = 60 million, 20% single, 50 million half of them cook - 25 million

40-50 = 75% = cooking/married/families averaging =  75% cook = 230 million, 80% married 180 million, family of 3 = 60 million, 20% single, 50 million half of them cook - 25 million

50-60 - 75% = cooking/married/families averaging =  75% cook = 230 million, 80% married 180 million, family of 3 = 60 million, 20% single, 50 million half of them cook - 25 million

Total population cooking = 3 million + 11 million + 85 million + 85 million + 85 million = 270 million

Cooking things they know will be the bulk or via notes or talking to others/parents on any given day as they wont have the time to try new things = 80% of them will do that, 216 Million

Remaining 54 Million

Other sources blogs, magazines, channels = 60% of them = 32 million

Remaining = 22 million

% using Youtube on any given day of the week = 21/7 = 3 million

Average cooking video length = 10 minutes

Time spent on watching cooking videos on youtube = 3 million * 10 = 30 million minutes a day

Clarifications:
  • Are we talking about the total watch time of cooking videos in the US? [Yes]
  • Are we talking about daily watch time for weekdays or weekends? [Weekends]
OK, I will first try to understand the personas that will be watching Youtube cooking videos, then I will make some assumptions about the user base, and usage pattern, then I can aggregate the watch time for each persona and get my final estimate.

Identify the users:
2 types of persona who will watch Youtube cooking videos.
  1. [Relaxer], who watch cooking video for fun, normally during the evening, will watch longer videos
  2. [Cooker], who watch cooking video for instructions, normally watch when cooking, usually over weekends, will watch shorter videos.
Assumptions:
  • US population: 350Million, # households: 100M
  • Smart Phone penetration: 90%, so 315M.
  • 40% will be DAU, 126M
  • Daily watch time about 10minutes per AU.
  • Relaxers account for 20% of the watch time during 6pm to 11pm, so about 126M*20%*5/24=5Million minutes/day
  • 30% of  households will cook once per day, so 30 Million, cooker age 20-80 yr old
    • 20-40 yr: accounts for 1/3 of cookers, 10% will watch Youtube Video, 10 min each, which translate into 30M*25%*10%*10minutes= 7.5M minutes/ day
    • 40-60 yr: accounts for 1/3 of cookers, 5% will watch Youtube Video, 10 min each, so 3.75M minutes/day
    • 60-80 yr: 1/3 of cookers, 0% watch Youtube cooking videos.
  • So during weekends, the daily watch time for Youtube cooking videos are about 16.25 Million Minutes
