Situation- I was assigned as a product manager for a streaming app in early 2016 when streaming services was still in infancy stages. The release required development of the front end as well as backend content pipeline. The content pipeline was developed for b2b and needed considerable re-development to support a streaming services platform. I was responsible for front end product management and my colleague was responsible for backend content pipeline upgradation
Task- Create a product release roadmap considering both front end and backend development timelines. Backend development was getting delayed and my colleague was of the opinion that we can go for an interim release with basic features while the rest of the pipeline development is in the progress.
Action- Make a decision of an interim release with minimal features or a delayed releases with MVP features. We compared the features planned for interim release against customer pain points. It hardly addressed 10-15% of the planned solution and looked very rudimentary. An interim release would have damaged the brand. Hence I was against an interim release.
Resolution- We looked at multiple trade offs and alternative approaches, but could not agree on an viable interim release. Hence at the end, had to look at business priorities. An interim release would not have provided the engagement or monetization that a MVP would have provided, worse it would have affected all other products under the customer logo. Hence, a decision was made against the interim release and delay the MVP
