Define the product/feature

It is a way in which people express by writing how they feel about a status, picture, advertisement or a post. People can write it, give a reaction etc.

Clarifying Questions:

Are we looking at the Mobile App or Website platform?

I will narrow it down to mobile app as mobile usage has increased in recent times.

Clarify with the interviewer if reactions should be counted as comments?

If the interviewer asks me to make my own assumptions, I will not use reactions in my answer.

What do we mean by improvement?

To increase engagement, increased usage of comments

Goals:

Increase the average number of comments by a user. That is to increase engagement

User group

Power Users- they check Facebook multiple times (More than twice) a day on their mobile devices. They are more engaged on social media.

Casual Users- once or twice a day on their mobile devices

Rare Users - few times in a week. This group would most likely be checking it on their desktops.

I would focus on the Power User category. They are young professionals who are tech savvy and are looking for features that can enhance their experience on Facebook App.

Pain Points/ User Journey

·       There is a ton of things on their wall that they need to go through. They would usually skim through it without paying much attention. The content on the wall can be sometimes irrelevant.

·       Since they are on their mobile devices, it is difficult to type in a comment

·       They do not know what to type on a particular post, status or a picture

·       They are concerned about how their comments can be construed.

·       Their Phone battery runs out.

Prioritize pain points:

Based on the impact to user, and the effort I think I’ll prioritize

·       Since they are on their mobile devices, it is difficult to type in a comment

·       They do not know what to type on a particular post, status or a picture

·       They are concerned how their comments can be construed.

Solutions:

1.     Using AI develop Customized auto-typed comments. For example if it’s a friend’s anniversary/marriage, have an autotyped congratulatory messages. The user can select the message and send it across.

2.     Using AI, have a repository of past comments by the user and show it to the user when they are about to comment.

3.     Sometimes when they are concerned on how the comments can be construed, they can restrict the audience to friends only, or friends except.

4.     To link Bitmoji to the comments, so their comments can feel more personalized

5.     If the post is on an advertisement product like a pair of shorts/ T-shirt or something, Have autotyped comments like, add to the wish list, need to upgrade etc., I’ll pass. This would also help the merchant to get a consumer perspective for their product

Solution #

Impact on the consumer

Effort to build

Comments

1

High

Medium

Facebook already has the capability in AI and can leverage that

2

Medium

Low

It should be easy to have a pool of historical comments for a particular User

3

Medium

Low

Facebooks allows this already with its stories

4

High

High

It involves a third party so there will be a whole process around it

5

Low

Low

This would potentially be easy

I would prioritize 1, 2, 3 as my solutions based on the impact to the user and the effort to build it.

Success criteria

Summary

1.       Solid Answer hitting on almost every step of the product improvement framework.

Areas you did well.

1.       Clarifying questions – You asked meaningful questions.  In a real interview dig more.  Don’t just get improvement means engagement – try to get them to tell you what they are actually trying to solve for.

2.       Set a goal

3.       Personas – you define a set of personas

4.       You pick amongst the personas and provide a rational

5.       You define a set of pain points

6.       Solutions – you provide a solid set of solutions including one that is moonshot ish – AI repository

7.       Prioritize solutions – think about adding in reach number of customers impacted vs just impact.  You can then let the interviewer that you are using model based on RICE.

8.       Metrics – number of comments per month is a fine enough metric

Areas of improvement.

1.       Tie to company mission of goal  I’ve never interviewed at FB but I’ve heard they really like it when you tie back to the Facebook mission - Facebook's mission is to give people the power to build community and bring the world closer together. Comments are an important part of building that community by ensuring that posts not only provide other with information while comments give feedback to the posting user.

2.       Set limitations – create limits (mobile, desktop, us only, by when, etc.)

3.       Prioritize pain points:  You should use a set of criteria to pick the pain point to focus on (reach, impact, etc.)  Also I would just pick one pain point and then provide 3-4 solutions to that one pain point).

4.       I would pick just one solution to this problem.

5.       Any counter metrics –  while I would check the number of total comments – I would monitor the total number of posts that get comments – its possible that these changes get more total comments but on a fewer number of posts.  How do the number of user comments left – impact the number of original posts those users make?

6.       Any limitations on the proposed solution?
