How I'd answer this product strategy question.
Clarifications:
1. Before I answer, I would like to know whether you want me to compare these 3 products as an end-user / consumer or as a product manager?
Interviewer response: As a product manager
2. Okay great. Do you want any specific area to be compared with among these 3? Such as content quality, monetization models, app features, etc?
Interviewer response: Please do a holistic comparison. If not, at least monetization models.
3. Sure. Let me try to cover all 3. Give me a moment to structure my thoughts.
Framework:
I will be following a 3 step process.
- Compare the top 3 buckets (content quality, monetization models, app features)
- Pros and Cons
- My recommendation
Is that okay?
Interviewer response: That's fine.
Content quality:
- Popular global content (NetFlix - 4/5, Hotstar 4/5, Prime 4/5)
- Popular regional (india specific) content (NetFlix - 3/5, Hotstar 4/5, Prime 3/5)
- Content categories (sports, movies, web series, news, etc) (NetFlix - 2/5, Hotstar 4/5, Prime 2/5)
- Genres (Drama, Thriller, comedy, etc) (NetFlix - 4/5, Hotstar 4/5, Prime 4/5)
Clearly, the winner is Hotstar as it has better regional content as well as more content categories.
Monetization models:
- Ad-supported free content - (NetFlix - No, Hotstar - Yes, Prime - No)
- Subscription (monthly & yearly) - (NetFlix - Yes, Hotstar - Yes, Prime - No)
- Subscription (yearly only) - (NetFlix - No, Hotstar - No, Prime - Yes)
Since Hotstar offers free to access to most of its content (except premium), it's natural to have a high user base in a cost-conscious and regional content-driven country like India.
App Features:
- Content discovery - (NetFlix - 4/5, Hotstar 3/5, Prime 3/5)
- Content Access - (NetFlix - 4/5, Hotstar 4/5, Prime 4/5)
- Streaming quality - (NetFlix - 4/5, Hotstar 3/5, Prime 4/5)
NetFlix is better in all aspects and hence the most likeable product.
Recommendation:
Although NetFlix has better app features, I would rank Hotstar as my favorite app as a PM due to the content and monetization models.
