Clarification Questions

  1. By jobs, do you mean finding a job in a company or organization rather than doing a one-time job as a freelancer? (Yes)

  2. Can I focus on the desktop platform first in the US? (Yes)

Structure

I will start with the mission of Facebook and explain how such a product can promote FB’s mission. I’ll segment the users and will select a segment to focus on. I’ll list their pain points and decide to focus on one or a few, brainstorm solutions, prioritize them, pick one, and describe the initial version and its metrics.

Mission and product

Facebook’s mission is to make the world closer together and build tools for communities. People spend 30-60% of their time at work, so it is a meaningful portion of their lives. They have related interests, and some of their Facebook friends are from their workplaces. In addition, there are communities related to the workplace, and lately, it has become popular to refer friends to job opportunities. All of those promotes FB’s mission to make the world closer together around communities.

Users

  1. People that are looking for a job.

  2. Companies that have openings and looking for candidates.

  3. HR, Head-hunters, and Agents.

I would like to focus on the biggest group, the job seekers, and elaborate on the community’s capabilities to assist them.

Journeys and pain points

  1. Find a company that you might be interested in and see if they have openings.

  2. Find companies with specific openings (specific role).

  3. Understand if the role matches my experience.

  4. Understand if there is a fit with the company culture.

  5. Apply with or without a referral.

  6. Preparation for the interview.

  7. Start working at a new place – preparations, having a few contacts or friends to make the first period easier.

Focus

I would like to focus on pain points #3 and #4;

#3 - Understand if the role matches my experience.

#4 - Understand if there is a fit with to company culture.

Once a user finds a role that she might be interested in, they would like to understand plenty of questions before applying to a position. I believe that communities could assist with this, and it is one of FB’s strengths.

Ideas

  1. On company pages, have a dedicated section that allows sharing and asking questions related to the company’s culture.

  2. On job pages, have a section to ask clarification questions about the specific role and allow the company employees to address them (not only the HR).

  3. On the job page, mention the co-workers you will interact with on your day-to-day job, and allow reaching out.

Prioritization

  1. Culture – Impact: Medium (not all people care about that) Effort: Medium

  2. Clarification about the role – Impact: High Effort: Low

  3. Future Colleagues – Impact: Medium Effort: Low

I would like to focus on #2 -> On the job page, have a section for asking clarification questions about the specific role, and allow the company employees to address them (not only the HR)

Initial Version

  1. Jobs section for company pages\groups.

  2. Have a comments section on the job pages.

  3. Have alerts for the company’s employees.

A future thought: Encourage employees to reply with some referral programs.

Metrics

Primary Metrics

  • # of submissions

  • # time to populate a position

  • % of openings occupied through Facebook

Secondary Metrics

  • # of comments by candidates

  • # of comments by company employees

  • # response rates (% of queries with respond | Average and Median respond time)

  • # monthly jobs posted

Concerns

  • Negative comments made by users.

  • Accuracy of responses.

  • The effort required by companies

Summary

We are going to focus on improving the experience of job seekers on Facebook.

We plan to leverage the fact that there are existing company pages\groups where companies’ employees can answer questions raised by candidates. If this works, and we will measure it, more companies will publish openings on Facebook, and more users will use Facebook to explore job opportunities.

Facebook product improvement questions call for a detailed framework that can guide you while answering. Try this.
Facebook Mission: To bring people together and build a strong community
Why facebook would go in Job market: Facebook being a social platform has a strong user database, and can help people businesses to find employee and vice versa. Highly qualifies profession people are able to find jobs through multiple job boards which exist currently. However, small businesses find it difficult to get people and vice versa. Facebook can help this community to connect to each other and work together.
So goal of having Jobs on Fecebook would be: Facebook strive to connect small businesses to people who are looking for Jobs
User segments:
  1. Businesses actively looking for employess for their businesses to be running
  2. Job seeker actively looking for jobs and looking for avenue for their living
  3. Job seekers occasionally looking for jobs

I would prioritise the user segment - "actively looking for jobs" because they are "in need" and need the most help from community. They are the people who are having real problems and needs job asap. If Facebook can help them get the job, Facebook would have very big impact in their real lives.

Pain points:
- Not able to find the right Jobs according to their needs
- Not able to discuss job opportunities with in community and with other job seekers
- Not able to identify which skills to upgrade according to the jobs

I would prioritise pain points based on whether it is biggest pain point and real problem where facebook can add value which aligns with the company mission.
Based on that, finding the right job is the real and biggest pain point. If job seekers can find the right job they are looking for, then they would be satisfied and can contribute more to the community.

Solution:
  1. - A facebook landing page where small business owners can post jobs and jobs seeker would be able to apply in one single click. The users will be able to filter different type of jobs and see the job requirements as well. This is two way marketplace where users will be able to connect to each other through facebook platform to understand more about the Jobs
  2. - A  community around jobs seekers where job seekers recommend/discuss jobs to each other about the Jobs they have seen somewhere or in their community or company etc
  3. - Jobs advertisement in Facebook news feeds. This will be according to user past experiences and job feed is customised for every users and user should be able to apply job

I would prioritise based on high impact, aligns with company mission and solving the biggest problem. This would be solution 1 where users will be able to find jobs and apply in a single step. This would solve the biggest pain point and solve the company mission of building the strong community and  help the businesses to find the right people and vice versa

Objective clarification:

What is the idea behind designing the new product? Do we want to increase the new user acquisition or increase the engagement of the existing user base or we want to focus on revenue alone?

Answer: Acquire new users and increase the engagement

Feature Clarification:

By Jobs product, understanding is that the companies would be able to post the jobs, the candidate would be able to apply to the jobs and see the status

Persona:

  1. Job poster
  2. Job candidate

For this discussion, we'll take the Job candidate persona

Needs of the user:

  1. Candidate wants to see the jobs based on their profile and experience level
  2. Candidate should be able to search for a job by various parameters
  3. Candidate should be able to apply against the job easily, without having to create different credentials and profile on the company's website
  4. Candidate should be able to see the status update on their application

Features:

Based on the priority, we can select the top 3 to begin with

Facebook can prioritize similar needs to Job posters/HR candidates.

GTM:

  1. FB can create a tab called Jobs for the user
  2. FB can open this for the companies initially (even it's own HR) and have some listings created and published for selected locations like Silicon Valley/NY/London/Bangalore etc.
  3. It can then start to see if there is a new user base that has signed up and using this feature primarily (acquisition) or existing users spending time on this page (engagement)
  4. If the numbers are growing, after few weeks, it can then be rolled out to broader audience

Note: this question is listed under the product improvement category. However, I think it fits better under the product design category because you’re effectively building a new product on the Facebook platform.

What you did well

  • You identified the two major user types and chose to focus on one of them. It would be too much to design both experiences in this question, so it makes sense to choose one of them. Since both are necessary, I don’t think you need to give a reason why you chose the job candidate user type. It’s just personal preference.

  • Nice job mapping out the user needs based on the user journey.

  • Nice job prioritizing the features.

  • Nice job including a section on how you’d integrate the new product into the existing Facebook platform.  This is not part of the standard framework but makes a lot of sense to include in this case. You also included how you would measure success and tied it back to the two metrics you mentioned at the start of the exercise: acquisition and engagement.

Where you could improve

  • You should have prioritized the user needs rather than going straight to solutions. The prioritization should have led you to focus on addressing the 2-3 most important needs.

  • Would have been nice if you mapped the features back to the user needs you identified.

  • Why did you include revenue potential in ranking the features? The metrics you’re trying to move are new users and engagement.
