  1. Clarify the Scope

The ask is vague and I like to clarify a few things to get better understanding : Sure
Cyclists; who are the cyclists segments i.e professional cyclists, weekend serious cyclist, causal cyclist, commuter cyclists ? Whom are we targeting here ? : It is up to you.

Ok, in that case I am going to go with commuter cyclists for the purpose of this exercise.

I am also going to focus on the urban US regions as you can find sizable participants compared to other areas.

  2. Negotiate a smaller scope

There are cyclist who are genuinely health conscious and doing it for the health without any external push. You will find a large segment who would cycle if there are tangible benefits. So in this exercise I will be dealing with both kind of rewards.

  3. Choose the Goal for the product

Build a product family to reward commuter cyclist extrinsically and intrinsically.

  4. List User Groups

We have already narrow down to commuter cyclist. There is still classification within them. I will not be repeating commuter all the time in my reference further, it is implicit.
    - Cyclist who commute to avoid traffic
    - People who want to get healthy
    - Total health nuts.
    - To avail monetary benefits & may be with health as secondary outcome.
    - On the verge of health collapse, time crunched , so no choice but to find means to exercise.

With exception of "Total Health Nuts" we can address the rest of the user segment with common solutions. So I am going to drop the health nuts and focus on all others with this solution.

  5. Selected Group

With exception of "Total Health Nuts" we can address the rest of the user segment with common solutions. So I am going to drop the health nuts and focus on all others with this solution.

  6. List User Needs

    - Comparative commute information cycle vs public transit vs car
    - Information on health benefits personalize for their body and commute.
    - Monetary benefits they can claim if they cycled to work. i.e. Company might offer discounts on healthcare premium, offer incentives, the city might also have certain perks.
    - Give a regiment for people with health decline, make an expert advice based on the health information.

Note : Some of these will need to comply with HIPPA regulations. I am not going into details of those here.

  7. List Product Ideas

A healthy work force is an advantage for business, some of the idea involve tie up with corporate HR policy, provide perks from corporation. It can be seen in two way, productivity increase because of health work force, decreased premium cost for corporation for health benefit programs.
Corporation's attempt to reduce cars on the road is definitely a brownie point with the city, cites offer corporations certain privileges and also to the commuter.
Third party to consider is the health care/insurance companies. It enables them to get insights into its patients, have means to communicate with them with apps on the bike & enable appropriate recommendation. A person with high cholesterol needs more cardio kind of cycling than a debiatic who would need muscle building routine.

There is single umbrella solution with various features to it. Build an App on phone/bike computer with cloud solution to integrate all the features.
    - Capture all the biking activities with standard speedometer, etc.
    - Mapping and routing capabilities
    - Cloud-side solution to capture the data from the bike computer/phone app.
    - Link with corporate HR and city services, so HR can provide $$ incentives to the commuters.
    - Cloud health & activity analyzer, so user can be informed of health benefits with their exercise.

  8. Prioritize a solution

    Basic MVP services
    - Capture all the biking activities with standard speedometer, etc.
    - Mapping and routing capabilities
    - Cloud-side solution to capture the data from the bike computer/phone app.
    - Link with corporate HR and city services, so HR can provide $$ incentives to the commuters.
    - Kudos awards on reaching certain milestones.

    Second phase solution.
    - Cloud health & activity analyzer, so user can be informed of health benefits with their exercise.

  9. Describe the Selected Solution

Develop an app on mobile phone which serves as basic bike computer, provide mapping & routing services. Each of the user can create their personal profile and sync up with a cloud service.
The solution as a whole will link with corporate HR systems. The solution in conjunction with HR, City will be able to credit financial incentives. The solution will also have means to awards kudos and other credit for people to share on social media.

  10. Define a success matrix

    # No. of download of the app
    # No. of activation
    # Engagement
    # miles/user and aggregate miles for the program.
