Before answering this question, we need to know what does Online Flight Insurance mean?

What Online Flight INsurance means to me (I will clarify with the interviewer): There are domestic and international flights going to and from the US. Sometimes during travel, you might lose bags or property might get damaged. Hence, the insurance can help you get proper refund in these cases. Also, for international trips, this includes medical claims and hospitalization as well (Travel insurance).

Based on what interviewer replies, I will go ahead with more information.

Filter 1: I am an Indian citized so have less idea about the US. However, I know there are 50 states in the US. I am going to assume each state has 4 major domestic and  2 international airports in each state. 200 domestic and 100 international airports.

Filter 2: There are 4 terminals per airport for flights going anywhere from the US coming to the US. Every flight interval is 30 minutes. Hence, we can say per day 4*(60/30)* 20 flights either come or go. Assuming 4 hours flights do no travel due to operational reasons.

Filter 3: Domestic flights are generally carry 30 rows (Boeing 737) so maximum capacity of 180 seats. International flights (Boeing 777) have 300 capacity. 80% of the flight capaicty will be filled on average.

Filter 5: Travel insurance will generally be booked for return trips so I will divide the total number by 2.

People available for travel insurance per day= [(200*4*2*20*180 + 300*4*2*20*300)*0.8]/2 ~ 8 million

Travel insurance cost = $20

Market per year = 8 million * 20 *365 = $60 Billion (Total addressable market)

Clarity

When you say USA are you referring to all flights within US ( Domestic) and not international flights moving and out of the US

Online flight insurance for passengers - cargo flights aren't included in this

I'm unaware if it's mandatory on demoestic flights - assuming it's optional

Does this include business travel - Yes

There are different packages available - assuming the average insurance to be 5$ to upto 50$ since the insured amount will vary from package to package

When you say online flight insurance business you mean the revenue generated by the industry

estimation flow

Population ~280 Million

industry = Number of flights x penetration overall x avg insurance revenue per trip

we can deriby the by : Split by % in terms of who can afford to fly/how often/what's the insurance penetration/avg insurance price

10% do not fly at all, these are people who are limited to local travel/travel by ground,

10% fly twice a year ( since you have to come back as well after flying in :) ) these are people who must fly on emergency but don't fly often, assume 20% insurance penetration with an avg insurance ticket size of 6$

50% fly 10 times a year These are the lower/middle middle class, most of the travel is lesisure but the odd business trip might be there, assume 20% insurance penetration with an avg insurance ticket size of of 7.5$

20% fly 20 times a year These are upper middle class who have to travel often for business as well, assume 30% insurance penetration with an avg insurance ticket size of of 10$

10% fly 40 times a year These are the upper class folks who can afford to fly more often for leisure and also need to fly often for business, business travel is often paid for and insured so the average insurance size is at 15$

Which rougly works out to 39.1 Billion dollars

I voted for the structure, but the number of flights per person seems overestimate. %40 of US population live in rural areas and sometimes never travel for years..

Estimate the market size of an online flight insurance business in the US.To estimate the market size of the online flight insurance business in the US:

First, I will ask clarifying questions

Next, I will create a general formula of how I will calculate market size,  catalog what I know and what I need to estimate

Finally, I will provide an estimate for the market size & describe some additional variables that might affect my estimate

-----------------------------------------------------------

Clarifying Q's

1. A flight insurance business is a "insurance for the bags and travel correct" that a traveler might take to cover the cost of the items if the items are lost  in transport, is that correct? CORRECT

2. Domestic flights in the US only correct? CORRECT.

3. "online flight insurance business" is subject to all business conducted when individuals who purchase their tickets online correct?

4. Is the average insurance price for a flight/traveler dynamic based on the flight or traveler?

Narration 1:

I have not heard of "online flight insurance" business myself, but I can most definitely see as this as desired need for some travelers and a potential revenue stream for airlines.

Me: Now, I will create a formula for the estimation of online insurance for flights.

Create a formula for the estimation:

# of flights  * the percentage of individuals per flight who opt-in to  * avg price of online flight insurance

Based on this formula

I will need to know or estimate:

1. The number of domestic flights in the US per year

2. The percent of business travelers, vs

3. The percent of round trips vs one way

4. The price estimate of flights domestically & estimated price of insurance

*** moment to calculate certain of these variables***

[# of US individuals who fly each year ] =  300 million * 30% of people fly at least once per yr  domestically* 4 flights / per person

20% * 10

60% * 4

20% * 2

FLIGHTS PER PERSON PER YR =  4.4

360 million flights /TICKETS sold total in the US domestically

The number of bags that could require insurance

I'm going to assume that "online bag insurance" only applies check-in bags and not carryons.

Usually, the times when I think people need to only carry a few cloths are around holidays or vacations or coming home from college , so in the summer or around Christmas break. 40% of the flights are carryon only

40% of flights are carry on only  -> 0% insurance

60% of flights have check-ins->  220 million flights

50 % of flights are business or first class which 100% have insurance

50% of flights are normal passengers and only 50% of them have insurance.

for a  75% of checkins have insurance

for a toal of (220 million flights with checkins and 60% insurance * .75).45 of all flights tickets have insurance

and lets say the average domestic flight cost $300   and that insurance is about 10% cost of the flight on avg so $30

So the total market:

360 million flights * .45 percent of flights have = 160 million * 30 = 4.8 billion dollar industry per year

Questions
    • Market size - regular consumers or just businesses/organizations?
    • Online flight insurance - should we include people who opt insurance when they book flight tickets online?
    • Flight insurance business - Should we include banks or third parties who offer insurance?
    • Consider people only from US or including foreigners who study/work?

Cataloging what I know
    • US population is 300 million.
    • Insurance range from $50 to $250 per trip for international and $10 to $50 for domestic which includes Trip cancellations, medical emergency, flight accident, etc.
    • Assuming not every individual will be willing to pay for an insurance or can't offered. Some amount of people who purchase tickets offline or agencies. Businesses/organizations purchase through tied up insurance companies.
    • Lets exclude people who take private jets.

Approach
[Number of people who travel per day and insure online] x [Average price paid for online insurance annually]

Estimate
  • On an average 2 flights depart and 2 flights arrive at airports for every 30 minutes. Even smallest and remote airports have built up to 4 terminals. Lets assume there are totally 190 flights in a 24 hrs window that takes off and lands at an airport.
  • Domestic flights carry around 192 passengers [3x3 seats with 32 rows] and international flights carry around 512 passengers [2x4x2 with 64 rows]. Assuming 1.5 million people travel everyday as weekends will have additional flights and also there are off/dry season when people don't travel.
  • From 1.5 million, lets consider 50,000 people take domestic flights. I am assuming not many people will be willing to buy online insurance for a 4 to 8 hrs travel. Also from 50k, I am assuming 10% would buy tickets from counter, agencies or directly from flight companies offline. So lets say only 25% of 50,000 buy insurance and that gives us 12,500 insured passengers.
  • From 1 million who travel overseas, I am assuming only 75% of people buy insurance including consumers who buy tickets online to reduce costs, by default assume worse case scenario and buy online insurance. Business/organization who fund travel tickets through online or offline, still insure their employees however, they tie up with insurance companies for health and others so, their manager or point of contact will definitely get them insured offline. So there are 75,000 insured insured passengers who travel overseas.

Conclusion
  • From the above estimation, I have concluded that around 90,000 people buy online insurance for their flight/air travel everyday.
  • Average insurance price for international flight is $140 (50+75+100+125+150+175+200+250/8) and domestic flight's average is $30 (10+15+20+25+30+35+40+45+50/9). Which gives us total of $170x365 = $65,000x90,000 = 5.8 billion.

I am working as an assocaite product manager who has just started working on estimations, any criticism or comments is much appreciated.
