Clarifications:-
  1. SuperMarket is basically is a big retail store of self service format where users pick things they want to purchase and then checkout. Is this fine?
  2. Are we specifically focusing on offline stores? You can decide
  3. This supermarket is for groceries including food items (fresh produce, frozen food, ready to eat, raw materials like cereals, pulses etc) is it fine? Yes
  4. Who is trying to solve this problem? as in is it a govt. org? startup or a retail chain? A well established retail chain.
  5. Why are they solving this problem? They have realized that this is a big opportunity and can serve as a competitive advantage as well.
  6. Any specific grography for which this problem is being solved? U decide.. ok will consider India since I am well aware about the needs and it is also one of the most populous country where consumption is increasing since it is a developing country,
Goal: Increase Sales of the store.
 
User groups with in > 60 aged people:
 
  1. Elderly people who are living independently and running their households
    1. Elderly people who have special needs and are living in old age homes or with help staff.
    2. Elderly people who are managing everything on their own.
  2. Elderly people living with their children where the household is mostly being run by the their sons/daughters
 
Now out of these user groups, I think segment 1.2 is growing in India with more kids moving to metro cities for doing jobs leaving parents in their home town. Also the culture of joint families is slowing in reducing and thus kids live separately. 
1.2 is also on the rise but over here the elders have a support staff which actually takes care of all the grocery stuff and thus not that relavent to the usecase.
 
Pain points of 1.2 user group:-
 
  1. How to manage, track their spends as they have a limited pension via which they are running their homes. Want to budget their spends at the same time maintain their life style.

  2. Super markets are huge, though they like to go spend time in grocery shopping as they have time at hand (retired people mostly) but traversing aisles  and then standing in checkout queues of a big super market week on week becomes tiring and exhausting experience

  1. Develop an app with OCR capability which can easily scan the bills of the grocery purchase and analyse their spends and inform them if they are going overboard

Here's where I would start to answer this type of product design question.

Clarifying question - Age Group ? 65+

Assumption - Supermarket where grocery, fresh produce are sold like Safeway , Whole Foods etc. Supermarket specifically for Elderly people. 

Goal - The current supermarket is not customized for this segment. This is a significant market size that we want to address. 

Bus Obj. - Short Term we want to acquire more users and want to measure user adoption. Long term our goal is to make money from this supermarket and expand.

Customer Segment

  1. Elderly people those who are fit and can still walk and do their shopping

  2. Elderly people those who use wheelchair

  3. Elderly people who shop with assistance from someone younger

I would like to Focus on the 1st user segment(Size)Parking, #3 can still shop in regular supermarket, for #2 we have to make significant changes. Once we get user adoption for #1 segment we can opt to extend it to 

Pain Points 

  1. Parking - Sometime it is difficult to find a parking

  2. Pushing Cart - Carts are heavy to push

  3. Products not reachable in shelf

  4. No place to sit or relax

  5. Hard to search products

  6. Instruction or Label too small to read

I will try to address pain point #2,#3,#5,#6 and #7

Solutions

  1. Smart Carts

    1. Battery Operated Cart that you can ride

    2. Carts have sensors which automatically scans your items once you put on it. Less wait time at the checkout counter.

  2. Shelf

    1. Height of the Shelf max 5 ft. 

    2. Don't put any item on the Bottom shelf or top shelf. It is hard for elderly peopl to either bend or reach the top shelf.

    3. Make it easier for Elderly people to pick items from the shelf without getting up from the cart.

  3. Aisles

    1. Computer Touch Screen on each Aisle that has a Store Map and direction of Shelfs.

    2. Voice Assistant Service(Ask me anything) set up in every aisle, which takes your location from the machine that you are operating from and guides you to what you are looking for. For example - you are in Aisle 5 , for eggs, go straight and turn left etc.

  4. Labels and Instructions

    1. Increase the font size of Labels and Instruction

    2. Smart Instructions - Each Aisle has its own announcements about what aisle are you in and what product you can find.

  5. Checkout 

    1. Separate reserved checkout counters for Elderly. 

    2. Handheld Barcode scanners so elderly can be billed without picking any item out of the cart at the checkout counter.

Separate small section of a supermarket can be dedicated to Elderly people with products only bought by them. The Area can be closer to the entrance. 

Prioritization and Tradeoffs

Solution 1 - High Cost, hence will skip for the redesign initially

Solution 2 - Shelf redesigns are low effort and high impact and I will make it a part of initial redesign

Solution 3 - For 3a , not sure if every elderly person is comfortable with technology and touch screens typing. So rather I would install a voice assistant product(3(b)). It is easier to talk to a device and get instructions. 3b is a high cost and high impact feature plus in the long run we can make savings in service cost.

Solution 4 - 4a is easy to implement. I will skip 4b, it's a high cost design and plus I feel it will be an overkill. The aisles might get too noisy. 

Solution 5 - Medium Cost and High Impact feature. This design is already implemented in some stores like Costco.

What's the problem statement? We need to design a supermarket for seniors (60+ year olds)

Who are the users? Primary user segment is 60+ year olds; We should also consider the people who accompany them as the secondary users. For this discussion, I will focus on the primary users;

What are the user needs? 1) Groceries (e.g. Milk, Eggs, Bread, Greens, Fruits etc.) . 2) Household items such as Detergent, Paper towels, toilet tissues etc. 3) Pharmacy 4) Medical supplies e.g. Walking stick, wheel chair etc.

What's the solution? We primary focus on three areas 1) Convenience 2) Selection and Availability

Here are the features in each area that I would focus on building.

1a. 80% of the parking spaces should be reserved for elderly/people who need assistance. Make sure we have enough spaces to keep up with the peak hour rush.

1b. Enough availability of motorized shopping carts

1c. Ramps designed for accessibility

1d. Staff available to readily help the customers when in need

1e. Store layout considering accessiblity in mind; The height of the shelves should designed in such a way most of the folks can reach to them with limited assistance

1f. Orders by Phone or App and delivering items at the customer's door step.

2a. Selection of items is key; Focus on those items that are specific to senior needs e.g. adult diapers, medical supplies, medicines etc.

2b. Pharmacy is a must

2c. Fast food attached to super market is needed so customers have the option to buy ready made food for lunch/dinner

My approach to the problem statement will be as follows:

To begin with I will paraphrase the question and ask clarifying questions. The key points I will clarify upon are:

  • Are users retired individuals with special needs and not very tech savvy? 
  • We are building a super market and not a digital product - idea is to clarify the scope. 
Secondly, I will give a brief outiline of my framework. My framework is around identifying & prioritizing user needs, listing and prioritizing solutions, and building out MVP. 
Next, I will identify key user needs and prioritize these requirments:
  1. Senior citizens have very specific healthcare and wellness needs. These include non prescription items and comfort clothing items. (ex: adult diapers and knee braces). 
  2. Ease of navigation (intuitive navigation) within the building and floor.
  3. Convinient parking & valet facility (including help with push carts). 
  4. Queue management to ensure less wait time for senior citizens. 
  5. Convinient payment options.

Next, I will take some time to list down the different solutions and prioritize my ideas. In this context, possible solutions are - 

  1. Build a single floor store with basement parking and sections for different categories. Put in place a robust mechanism for timely fulfillment of critical inventory. 
  2. Build a multi-storey store with parking in basement and different floors dedicated to different categories. Put in place a robust mechanism for timely fulfillment of critical inventory. 
Of the two solutions, I would go for sl nos 2. The reason being a multi-storey building will occupy lesser real estate and categories can be segregated in such a way to most frequentely used items are stored in ground floor and other items in different stores (per requirment). 
The MVP of the product can be built in the following way:
  1. Identify a convinient location within the city and build a convinient parking/valet area that will make it easy for senior citizens to approach the store. 
  2. Identify items required and stock these items within the store - across different storeys. The store will have ample number of lifts to ensure parallel operations. 
  3. Put in place a mechanism for capturing orders from individuals via phone/mobile. Pre-paid items can be delivered (placed in car) via valets at the parking lot itself. 
  4. Have multiple check-out queues and different payment options available for convenience of senior citizens. 
  5. Have ample easy to follow instructions (intuitive building design) and good number of trained helpers to assist senior citizens in a patient manner. 
  6. Put in place to capture feedback/complaints and monitor deviations/non-compliances regularly. 
In sum, we will begin by identifying a good location for building a store and then stock up relevant categories across storeys (most important at ground and least important above). Additionally, we will build convenient access points for easy entry/exit and build a call-in facility for pre-booking of items. Lastly, we will implement and monitor a robust feedback mechanism for day to day operations.

Users

1)    Elderly people

2)    Apart from Elderly people, anyone can use it.

I will prioritize the elderly people as users.

Use cases:

1)    Elderly people go to the supermarket for grocery shopping.

2)    Elderly might shop for accessories from the supermarket like watch, earrings, bags etc.

3)    Elderly people might do shopping of Toiletatries, showergel, shampoo, I bucket them in the bathroom needs.

4)    Elderly people go to the supermarket for buying utensils for the kitchen.

5)    Elderly people go to the supermarket for buing the medicines from the pharmacy of the supermarket.

6)    Elderly people prefer to eat something in the supermarket if they get tired of shopping so it should have a restaurant like a subway or a coffee ship like starbucks.

I will prioritize the use case # 1,3,5 for now.

Pain points :

1)    In a normal supermarket, Elder people might not find the food which is specific for the people with age group for more than 55 years.

2)    Elderly people might have a problem walking or looking for items if the supermarket is big as they are old and get tired early.

3)    These people might not be willing to spend a lot as they might be retired and do not want very expensive stuff.

4)    These people might be on some sort of medication as they are old and might not get medicines at the same place where they do groceries.

Solutions:

1)    The supermarket should have a dedicated aisle for food items categorized for the age group more than  years.

2)    The supermarket should be designed in such a way that the shelves are not of much height as many people might be on a wheelchair and they will not have access to the items kept on heighted shelves.

3)    Supermarket should have limited not very expensive brands for bathroom items like shower gel, shampoo because these people are not too much into fashion and need these items for basic needs.

4)    Supermarket should have a price checker for checking the price of the items.

5)    Supermarket should have multiple counters for the billing and payment as these people cannot stand in a big queue and should have multiple payment options especially cash as these people might not be tech-savvy

6)    Supermarket should have assistants available to assist them by pressing the button.

7)    Supermarket should have a pharmacy as these people might not be able to go to pharmacy especially to buy medicines and one place should serve them the purpose of grocery+ medical needs.

8)    Supermarket should have the medical equipments available like blood pressure/diabetes check as these are the major needs of these people.

9)    Supermarket should have shopping carts designed for elderly people and enough space in it to keep the items.

 

Evaluate solutions:

I will prioritize all the above solutions as these are the must-have and performance features which a supermarket should have for the elderly people.

Design of Super Market for Elderly should have end to end customer convenience factored in all aspects.

1. Entry Point. Primarily should be for Elderly. If others crowd then it will defeat purpose of the objective. Parking should be easily accessible from the entrance. Entrance should have wheelchair ramps. Gaurd posted should be able to help in case needed.

2. Inside access; Aisles  should be wide enough for wheelchair movement. the area should be well lighted. signage should be large and prominent.

3. Declutter the displays - with mainly used products of elderly should be kept. Including staple foods conviently packaged, hygine, pharma, over the counter medicines, etc.

4. other items of interest to elderly including religious accessories should be included. books and mags should also be included.

5. if space available, then a gathering point with coffee/tea with light snacks can be very attractive addition as it will allow for elderly to come an meet with their friends and make a better shopping experience.

 

6. Blood pressure and blood test if made avaiable will be of added attraction to elderly.

7. checkout assistants to take groceries etc to the exit ramp and load into vehicle should be provide.
