How do you improve Trello?

1- What is Trello? Trello is a collaboration tool that organizes your projects in tables. At a glance, Trello tells you what is being developed, who is working on that and where something is in progress.

2- When you say “How would you improve Trello?” could you please be more specific on what you would like to be improved: new feature, Web/mobile, Active users, retention, revenue?

3- Let’s assume that the objective is to improve the retention and the revenue generated by the user base. Indeed, we observe that 80% of the revenue is generated by 10% of the user base, which mostly (85%) represent enterprises.

4- Let’s assume the list of user groups we have in Trello

Personal users, who use Trello for personal organization. Let’s assume that this segment is 5% of the user base, and it generates around 1% of revenue

Professional user, who use Trello for non-corporate but professional projects, work in teams. Let’s assume this segment represents 60% of the user base, and the generated revenue is 13%;

Enterprises-users who use Trello for Corporate Project Management. For this last group, let’s assume that it represents 35% of the user base and 85% of the revenue generated;

At last, let’s assume that Trello is used at 75% on mobile, and 25% on the Other platforms (PC, Tablets, etc.…)

Based on these assumptions, the best segment to focus on is the segment of professional users who represent a large user base and we will focus on the retention of the mobile experience.

5- Let’s identify some pain points that are met by the professional user:

Because of the fact that there are too many features on pro, and enterprise-class, some professionals sometimes come to think that they will pay for not-used features

User meet lots of problems to log in the mobile app (with verified ID, with google accounts, an obligation to have an Atlassian account, etc.…)

Even with a pro account, users report that the excel export is unusable

The users cannot previsualize document on mobile, they are obliged to download it to see it

On mobile, it can be very Slow to open tables on mobile compared to PC

6- let’s list some solutions the pain points encountered:

Solution

Impact on user

Complexity

Improve the login: access with google account

High: it will allow the user to get in the app, and use it.

Low: the feature already exists, it looks more like a bug

Improve the login: access without an Atlassian account

High: it will allow the user to get in the app, and use it.

Low: the feature already exists, it looks more like a bug

Previsualization of documents on mobile

Medium: based on the number of users affected

Medium

Synchronization with among platforms

Medium: it will boost transparency

Medium: increase the maintenance costs dues to servers’ requests

Increase the number of free power-ups

Medium: it will create a better call to subscribe on pro class

Low: easy to implement because the features are already available

Review the export feature to excel

Medium: not lots of users are concerned but it generates revenue losses

Medium: depends on the degree of the bug

Compress data on the mobile experience

High: it will increase the response time for mobile users

High: it depends on the architecture of the app, implementing a compression algorithm may be very time-consuming

7- Some metrics to focus on:

Growth of mobile user WoW

Avg Time spent / Week / user

Growth of Pro class users WoW

8- Wrap Up: the goal of the improvement is to increase retention and revenue. With assessment based on impact on user, and complexity of development. Let’s prioritize the solutions as following:

Improve the login: access with google account

Improve the login: access without an Atlassian account

Compress data on the mobile experience

Increase the number of free power-ups

Review the export feature to excel

Previsualization of documents on mobile

Synchronization with among platforms
