Problem statement -  Build features in iPhone to increase accessibility for users with disability

What kind of disability is being referred here? You can choose

Type of disability -

  • Blind
  • Deaf
  • Dumb
  • Amputated
Let's assume blindness as the disability for this discussion

Is it specific to any geography? You can decide

Let's assume India for this discussion

What is the goal? Increase user engagement

Type of solution - h/w or s/w? You can decide

Let's assume software solution for this discussion

User understanding -

Users - Completely blind; Partially blind

Let's assume completely blind users for this discussion

Use cases/ pain points -
  • Lock/ Unlock phone
  • Add a contact
  • Make a call
  • Read messages in  WA
  • Write and send messages
  • Add reminders
  • Understand video messages
  • Take pictures using camera
  • Send videos
  • Send emojis

Solutioning -

  1. Voice recognition based phone lock/ unlock
  2. AI assistant support to add/ update contact details
  3. AI assistant can place a call to any recipient added in the contact list
  4. Notify user via voice support when a message lands into WA followed by text to voice translation support via AI assistant
  5. Use AI to translate voice to text and send message to desired recipient
  6. Ask AI assistant to set a voice reminder with the details and remind user accordingly through audio message
  7. Use AI to analyze video, summarise it and translate to voice and read aloud for the user via AI assistant
  8. AI support to open camera, intelligent focus adjust based on user need and click pictures.
  9. AI can select photos based on user instructions and send it to desired recipients
  10. AI can select the relevant emoji based on user instructions and send it to desired recipients
Prioritisation - (Impact v/s effort)
  1. P0 features - 1 through 6 [MVP]
  2. P1 features - 7, 9, 10
  3. P2 features - 8
Success metrics -
  • # users using voice recongition to lock/ unlock phone
  • Time spent per user in the phone
  • % users adding contacts through AI assistant
  • % users placing call through AI assistant
  • % users reading messages through AI assistant
  • % users sending/ reacting to messages/ emojis through AI assistant
  • % users setting reminders through AI assistant
  • % users sending video messages through AI assistant
  • % users using camera through AI assistant
  • User NPS

Clarifying questions:

  • What type of disabilities are we considering ? Multiple or single?

  • What kind of accessibility are we considering?

  • The feature would be a software based solution or a special iphone based on the needs of the users(hardware based)

  • What geographical location are we targeting?

  • What is the company goal behind this feature?

  • Any reactions like budget or time?

Assumptions:

  • Disability Complete blind

  • Able to use normally like others making calls, using camera, send and read  messages , view image, capturing image(will make question lengthy)

  • Software based

  • Mostly EU

  • Target a new customer based by solving a problem

  • no

Users and User journeys

  • People who are completely blind

  • Family members

  • User journey For various tasks (normal users )

  1. Making calls:Finding the Phone->Searching who to call to->dialing->taking->Ending the call.

  2. Reading message:Finding the phone->checking any new message->opening-> read and reply

  3. Sending Message: Finding the phone->searching who send message to-> writing-> send

  4. Viewing Image:Downloading image->view and feel the vibe

Pain points

  • Finding the phone

  • Searching who to call

  • Checking for new message

  • Reading and replying(typing)

  • Not able to feel the image

Prioritizing the problems

  • Finding the phone (Start part of the journey)

  • Searching who to call(already solved by siri)

  • Checking for new message(Already solved by siri)

  • Reading and replying(typing)

  • Not able to View the image(unsolved  problem)

Finding the phone and Viewing the image

How this problems being solved now

  • Use of siri as assistant to do daily task

  • Problems with current solution

  1. Lacks personalizations

  2. Lacks the capability of the felling the image

Possible solution

  • Improving siri to cater new users by adding feature like Special assistant but on more personal level that

  1. Find my phone feature(using phone  wifi seniors to make a map of the room then guiding users to the phone using Voice )

  2. Read write message by listing to user voice

  3. Read and feel Image: Using LLm models to understand the image and using sensors like vibrations, voice and sound to tell and make them feel what is in the image

Still in learning phase, Please do give feedback so that i can improve

Hi Ashutosh,

This is a typical product design question where asking the right clarifying questions can help give structure and direction to your answer. While you brought in a typical structure for these types of questions, your details lacked clarity.

Not all questions belong in the clarifying section. Each question you ask should be strongly backed with reasoning explaining why it makes sense. For example, it's unclear how "geographical location" would help in designing an accessibility feature for blind users.

Your solution section is too brief. As a PM, you're expected to provide thorough details on both the problem and the solution. Stating that "most solutions are already solved by Siri" contradicts your identification of these as problems. If Siri truly solved these issues, they wouldn't be pain points in the first place.

The solutions you mentioned lack clarity and feel ambiguous. You need to elaborate on the technical implementation and user experience aspects.

Your solution didn't include anything related to metrics and success criteria, which is essential for evaluating the feature's effectiveness. You should also address:

  • Prioritization of features (Impact vs. Effort)
  • Rollout strategy
  • Potential risks
  • How you would measure success for your features
  • Timeline and roadmap

    Good luck with your preparation!
