What inclusiveness features would you include in the browser?

1. Describe the product -What does it do? Who uses it? How do they use it?

Since this question has been asked at Google, I would say that we are talking about Google Chrome as a browser and not all browsers of the world. (Clarify or confirm if this assumption is fine)

Google crome has a browser in which you can open any website by entering the link. You can also add apps as add-ons like Grammerly, and Adblock to make your browsing experience better. It also has various other functionalities like a bookmark, password storage and suggestion, incognito, etc.

This is installed by default on every Android device. You need to install it from their app store for others including laptops, tablets, and other phones.

2. Clarification questions

  1. What do you want to improve in the app? And why? Revenue/ Engagement/ Retention/ Adoption? This is already provided in the question. It is engagement

  2. Do I own the entire app or am I the PM for a specific vertical? - Assume the entire app. Clarify

  3. Is there a timeline that we are looking at? - No such restriction. Clarify

  4. Is there a specific channel to be considered (Web/Mobile/ Tablets)? - Mobile just because it is a more used device than the other two and any change will impact the larger audience. (Mobile: 60.61%, Desktop: 37.23%, Tablet: 2.16%)

  5. Shall we improve an existing feature or build a new one? Anything

3. Choose a metric to be improved - North Star metric under the umbrella of the main objective - Since the umbrella is engagement let us say that we want to increase the time spent on the app as our North Star.

4. List the user groups and select ICP

There could be different kinds of users, inclusiveness is a diverse large umbrella and with each one of them, the pain point will be different. Some common user groups are

  • Elderly, Disability, Sexual orientation, people of color, people of unknown regions (language inclusivity)

  • People from developing nations, people with lower income

Let us look at a specific user group. Create an ICP - Let us say we pick Disability as our larger umbrella.

  • Severe motor disability - unable to use hands freely

  • Can read or hear properly but are unable to use their fingers

  • Needs to perform tasks on their own. May be lives alone or with least assistance

  • Tech savvy, knows what to do just unable to do them

5. Pain points of the selected user group

  • Difficult to navigate on the phone because the icons are small and the click needs to be precise

  • For reading optimal scrolling is a problem

  • Clicking on various buttons and links within the app

  • The widgets with which we enter the information like text boxes, calendars, and dropdowns require precision

  • Laptops have tabs and up-down buttons for help but mobile has nothing

5. User journey

Since we are talking about a browser that supports many functions. Let us choose a user journey that is common and generic so that we cover the maximum amount of use cases.

Say they need to fill their tax returns given this is a broad group

  1. Opens Google chrome via Siri/ Ok Google

  1. Searches for tax return websites and the links show up

  2. Click on the link and enter login credentials

  3. Upload documents, enter information, and submit - This step requires scrolling, switching tabs, using the widgets etc.

  4. Go to another website and validate

6. Solutions

  1. Design change of the current page and create one big button called options it provides various options including moving between tabs. However, one of the cons of this solution is that we will increase the click and perhaps scroll for all the basic functions

  2. To make scrolling easier, say we integrate the volume buttons. At a time it shows what is on the screen and you can scroll up and down. It always moves in blocks so that if you have to reference it is easier.  Like the buttoned models of the Kindle

  3. To make in-app widgets more accessible we can create a pop-up when we reach a section of the page that requires entering information. A soft tap on just any area will make that section a pop up which is large and is easier to navigate and enter information

  4. Within Chrome we add Ok Google feature which they can use to fill, scroll to the next screen

7. Evaluate solutions

Solutions

Impact on the user

Effort

Design change and include options button

High - Discoverability is easy. They know where to go and you get a full page

Low

Volume key to scroll

High - Could make the reading experience much better

Medium - requires hardware integration

Pop up for information widget

Medium - Might face the same problem as in the browser

Low

Tight integration with Okay Google

High - they can easily navigate in handsfree mode

Medium - Although both are Google products but might require some work

Based on the above, let us go with a changed design and add an Option button in the MVP

8. Define metrics for measuring performance (Optional)

Discoverability

  • Number of browser sessions it took for the user to click on the button for the first time

  • Number of times they went the complicated way before clicking on the option button

Acquisition

  • Number of users who used the option button

  • Number of people who used the subsequent menus

Activation

  • Number of users who used the button more than once

  • Number of times it was clicked in a session with the user choosing a subsequent menu item
