I would ask clarifying questions like what type of airport we are talking about International, domestic, small private, or backcountry puddle jumper. When we say security, are we talking about checked-bag security or personal carry-on security? Because this is the World Health Organization that is asking this question. I will focus on International travel for blind people because the airport security process is tailored to healthy adults. Making it hard for 26% of disabled adults to make it through airport security confidently. Out of that, 26% 12 million people 40 years and over in the United States have vision impairment, including 1 million who are blind. Approximately 6.8% of children younger than 18 years in the United States have a diagnosed eye and vision condition. Currently, the blind or impaired population in the US doesn't have a product or service to help facilitate their airport security experience.
This product would be a free or subscription-based phone app and a paid smart walking stick.
Goal
Since this has both a phone app/smartwatch and a hardware device, our goal would be to track.
Revenue from the intelligent walking stick
Revenue from the phone/smartwatch app
Active users can be defined as users who use the device more than two hours a day on both devices.
How many people have downloaded the app
How many people have activated the app
Engagement metrics like how long did they use the app or smart stick.
Retention how many people are renewing their subscription
Support calls regarding the app or smart stick
Engineering errors/stuck task report for the app and smart stick
Version control/software updates
User group
I would go through and discuss the different visually impaired personas. However, the interviewer and I have decided to focus on age-related diseases affecting the eye, like Diabetes, cataracts, and Macular degeneration, due to the many aging baby boomers in the US who have retired and are looking to travel.
Prioritize
I would walk through the app's customer journey and the smart stick's use. Based on this, we plan to focus on the freemium base-level version as we test this new space. This would allow us to lower the hurds to entry and work on getting insurance/federal funding support for our users.
Solutions
App
notify the user of sound or vibration or both
need to tap into google maps
need to add their global entry or fast-pass information
as well as ticket information
Drivers license information and photo
barcode reading
scan and translate
Smart Walking Stick
The smart stick would need to utilize the phone's network to pull in information that could help the user navigate the airport security process by sound, vibration, or both.
Need to be easily set up and connect to the app
needs to be able to break down into three sections
lidar or sensor tecknology
barcode reading
scan and translate
Evaluation
After evaluating the different solutions, we have decided to focus on the app for now as most visually impaired people already have a walking stick or can get assistance. Since the stick would heavily rely on the app's capability, we must focus on determining what is valuable to our customers and what they are willing to pay for.
For the app, we will focus first on getting all the travel information in one app and provide them with notifications via sound or vibration on where to go within international airports and to translate verbal and written text.
Performance Metrics
activation
Installation
engagement
qualitative customer feedback
retention
Summary
To summarize, we plan on building an app that would help blind or visually impaired adults over the age of 40 to navigate the airport, including the security checkpoints.
