Should Twitter add an "Edit Tweet" feature?

Twitter has been shying away from allowing tweets to be edited. Elon took a poll on twitter to check if audience wants tweets to be edited. And the feedback was positive. You are a PM on Tweets and Elon asks you opinion on the same. What would be your recommendation?

I would structure my answer by thinking of following points:

1) Twitter's mission and goal

2) Target Users and their needs

3) What capability does the 'Edit' feature give?

4) What are the risks if the 'Edit' feature was made available?

5) Can those risks be mitigated?

If the answer is 'Yes' to #5, my recommendation would be to allow 'Edit'.

Starting with the #1: Twitter's mission and goal > is to give everyone the power to create and share ideas and information instantly without barriers.

2) Target Users and their needs: Creators and Consumers.

Creators - individual users or brands. Individual users are further divided into government officials, news channels, influencers who want to share their ideas or voice their opinions.

Consumers - want to react with their thoughts.

3)  What capability does the 'Edit' feature give?

Considering the creators segment and their needs, they will want to edit the post for following reasons: a) Typo - this is fairly common given the user is using this platform for instantly sharing b) Change their opinion c) Reword to increase/decrease the impact/tone/sentiment of the post.

4) Risks: #a seems a genuine reason for editing the post. But #b and #c could invalidate the entire tweet's orginal meaning and nullify the reactions/comments posted on the original tweet. This poses a huge threat to the fundamental existence of Twitter and lose it's credibility.

5) To mitigate risks of #b and #c, but still solve for #a, edit can be made available for a x time span and when there has been no engagement with the tweet. Assumption: that user will realise his typo mistake within a few minutes of this tweeting.

Hence, I would recommend giving the capability of 'Edit' for limited time period untill there has been no views & engagement (comments/re-tweets) on it.

The following questions can advance the line of thought;

  • Is Twitter on track to achieve its mission and vision (or maybe has already achieved/is achieving) without the Edit feature?
    • If yes, do not touch it. If no, then I would ask a few more questions.
  • What was the original rationale for not including the Edit feature?
    • Has that mission/goal/objective been achieved?
    • If not, why?
    • what lessons have we learnt?
    • Then proceed as below...
  • Is this one of those features that should be determined by users or is it one of those strategy/differentiating our product from competitors, giving us a competitive edge over competitor?
    • If yes then, i would not consider user input/feedback
    • if no, then I would find out
  • Have we collected feedback from users about their thoughts on lack of an Edit feature?
    • if yes, what do they think?
    • If no, why? can we collect?
  • Assuming the feature needs to be added, then I would examine the impact of doing so under the following areas;
    • expected impact on the product's north start metric
    • Product marketing/product pricing
    • technical/technical debt
    • cost/impact analysis
    • risks/mitigation
  • Then I would run my options through a prioritization matrix ...
