clarifying questions:

1. any specific age group for these kids? - let us say 5-13.

2. can i assume that FitBit part of Google ?

3. fitbit offers hardware and software. i am assuming that we will focus on the app side

Let us start with the industry landscape - there are premium players such as Apple Watch but they don't offer cater towards kids. and there are the rest that compete on cost and they largely offer similar products. and no one offers unique value for kids. so, i think we should build this product.

4. let me start with defining the goal.  our mission is  To empower and inspire people to live a healthier, more active life.   Our goal for this product is to increase acquisition and to engagement so that we can retain these kids to stay with our ecosystem as they enter their teens and adulthood.

here is a high level structure i use while designing any products.

first, let us segment our customer and then choose a segment where we will focus on, then let us identify challenges for these kids and then figure out a product idea that will truly solve these needs.

segments

1. parents -> a) who wants to raise kids as professional athletes , b) who want to buy smartwatch for their kids safety c) who want to teach kids on living fit/healthy lifestyle. c) who have kids with health issues

2. kids -> a) want to look cool , b) self-motivated kids with fitness part of their lifestyle.

the buyer segment with a larger addressable market is parents who want their kids to maintain healthy lifestyle.  So, let us focus on this segment and persona

pain points on safety

1. how should i choose a watch that will help my kid and he/she will enjoy wearing

2. i am worried if my kid is far away from me.

3. how will i know about my kids meeting their goals?

solution

1. one click to call (medium impact, low cost of effort)

2. auto notify when the kid reaches specific destination  (high impact, medium cost of effort). we will build this option for MVP as a unique differentiator.

3. AI/ML to detect a kids day life pattern and auto-notifications (eg: your kid has reached home)

4. health alerts if any deviation is detected (fever, blood pressure changes etc.)  (medium impact, low effort). part of our MVP.

for MVP,  will build auto notifications with health alerts. in subsequent versions, i will build ML to detect kids pattern and auto notify.

metrics

1. no of items sold - no. of items returned

2. no. of customer-reported issues via service calls

3. no. of calls or notifications used via the watch

summary: we focused on parents who are concerned about kid's safety and our watch will provide one click to call their loved ones.

What is Fitbit?

Fitbit is a fitness product, which is a bundled offering of Hardware and Software.

The hardware is equipped with sensors to track daily activity, including running, walking, exercising, etc. It can also track health metrics such as heart rate, temperature, blood pressure, calories burned etc.  . The hardware is fitted with the GPS technology to help you track the distance you have travelled accurately.

The Software solution (digital App) acts as a user interface to view all the health related metrics in a user friendly way trends. Users can gain insights from data such as my avg steps per day is around 10K and my resting hear rate is ~50bps etc.

What value does Fitbit brings to this world?

  1. Provide a valuable health & Activity tracking data in a user friendly way.
  2. Motivates people to perform better and be more active.
  3. Makes it fun and social where you can follow your friends and compete on leaderboard.

Mission of Fitbit: Help people to live Active Lifestyle.

A few clarifying questions:

  1. Do we want to design Hardware and Software? Let's assume software (App) for iOS and Android..
  2. Geo - Lets assume US first.
  3. Assumption: there is no health regulation issues by putting sensors on Kid's wrist.
  4. Assumption: Security should be of utmost importance as someone with access to Kid's account can know their current location.

Goal/purpose of the Kids Fitbit App:

Provide a fun companion that motivates kids to be more active.

Let's define the structure:

  1. Evaluate different user groups.
  2. Pain point with current solutions.
  3. Brainstorm Solutions
  4. Design User Experience
  5. Success Criteria and launch Plan

User Groups:

The Child: The Child is the primary user who is already active (Play Sports) or trying to be more active. The age group should be between 10-17 as these are years when children are the most active as they are learning a new sport. Also, they would need to carry a phone to access the app.

Further, Lets assume the scope of the exercise is only related to normal use case and the special needs children ( bind or heart issues ) are excluded from the scope.

Parents:  Kids can wear the Fitbit at home, school or during practice. Therefore, parents need to understand the app as well as they will help the child to track and monitor the metrics.

Coaches: The coaches will also interact with the App so that they can understand the performance metrics and guide the child.

Our design will consider all the users as the expectation is that all these user groups will directly or indirectly interact with the Child's Fitbit App.

Current Issues:

  1. App can be distracting to use during School or and Practice session with notifications etc.
  2. The current App is built for Adults which could be difficult for a child to adopt.
  3. App Shows a lot of useful data but a child might not be able to understand the data.
  4. The App has a social networking piece where you can have a healthy competition with friends however, this could be very distracting for the kids and might lead to some unhealthy behavior towards the kids that are not active (bullying etc).
  5. Kids might not consistently want to wear the Fitbit hardware or might not want to consistently check their performance in the app.

Based on the impact and goal of the App, I believe "App Shows a lot of useful data but a child might not be able to understand the data." is the problem we should focus on because the core of the app is to show data and insights and if Child cannot understand the data, then will not use the app at all.

Brainstorm Solutions:

  1. Instagram like video Reel - instead of showing dense data to the kids, we can show the accomplishments of the data (total steps, heart rate, Activities) in a 10 sec video reel with an avatar and animation -- at the end of the day. Kids can post it to their TikTok or insta.
  2. Be like you Hero - we can ask the child about their favorite sportsperson, who they aspire to be like,  and on the app show when their hero was their Age, they walked 5K steps / day or practiced for 2 hours / day. We can then make it a daily goal for them to be like their Hero and show on the App how they are trending daily against those goals. In this case, they don't have to understand the data in vacuum but instead they will see it tracking against a certain number.
  3. Climb Everest: We can show kids an animated mountain on the app and their avatar climbing the mountain. More steps they take, higher they climb the mountain. So instead of showing data, we can show how high they climbed on the Everest (or some other mountain ) based on the daily activity and calories burned.
  4. Cheers to you - Instead of opening the app and reading the data, the kids will get a personalized message from their family member, coaches or friends, when they hit a certain activity goal in the day.

Let's evaluate the above solution based on the Level of effort, increased engagement of Kid with the App and speed to market ( assuming we want to launch this sooner rather than later to text the market fit ).

I would recommend solution 1 -- Instagram like video reel because:

  1. Fitbit/google already has video capability so it will be easy to build.
  2. Kids are already active on TikTok and Instagram therefore, this will motivate them to achieve their goals and post on the social media.
  3. This solution will be the fastest to the market.

Other solutions also have potentials such as "Cheers to you" and "Climb Everest" and these could be the solutions for the next phase.

Success Metrics:

Primary Metric:

  1. Daily Activity of a Child
    1. This can be measured by Daily steps, calories burned, High intensive activities.
  2. Daily Video Views - have they checked their daily video

Secondary metric:

  1. Daily Active Users of the App
  2. the total # of videos viewed per week.
  3. Retention: How many times a week user logged into the app and how many times they have watched a video.
  4. Video shares: # times video shared on social network platform.
