Design an app to improve the wine-buying experience at a grocery store.

I would first seek clarity from the Interviewer in the form of the following questions:

  1. Where is this grocery store located?
  2. Is the customer traffic to the wine section in the store high?
  3. Does this grocery store, sell only wine and other alcoholic beverages?

3.1 Why does this store only wish to facilitate an app for its wine-buying experience and not any other shopping experience?

Let’s assume that the shop is located in an Urban city, with high customer traffic to the wine section and that the store does sell other products apart from wine. Further, the store would like an app due to the limited physical shelve space they currently have to display their wide collection of wines.

I would then want to identify potential users for this app and define a profile for each:

Far-flung Shoppers: Shoppers who live far away from the physical store may wish to document their shopping list days before their shopping day.

Idle Shoppers: Shoppers who are physically in the store but may wish to pursue the entire variety of wine from the comfort of their phone

I would now want to understand these shopper's problems

Shoppers

Types of Shoppers

Potential Problems

Decision

Shoppers

1. Idle Shoppers

1.1 Crowed Wine Section

1.2 Limited Viewing Display on Shelves

1.3 Have to physically obtain the wine in spite of the congestion

2. Far Flung Shoppers

2.1 Risk of wine being sold out

2.2 Distance constraint

We will choose to address the problems of Far Flung Shoppers because we believe there are usually more far-flung shoppers than idle shoppers in any business

There are three potential ways to address this problem

  1. Design a mobile app that embodies an online wine shop that allows the customer to view and purchase the wine on the go, with home-delivery options.
  2. Design a mobile app that allows customers to view, reserve, or choose home delivery. When the wine is reserved they could visit the store the next time to purchase their other grocery supplies they could uplift it.
  3. Design a mobile app that allows customers to view wine collections and in the event of a sold-out match the wine to a nearby seller so that the customer could make the purchase.

Solutions

Pros

Cons

Solution 1

Reduce congestion at the Store for Idle Shoppers

Ensure customers could all equally benefit on a first-come-first-serve basis

Customers may not go to the store to purchase other groceries

The Home Delivery option would attract additional cost

Solution 2

Ensure the physical viewing and purchasing of other goods

The customer gets to choose home delivery or reservation. The home delivery option would attract a higher cost and be suitable for emergency use while the reservation could be free of charge for non-emergency use

Disobedient reservations may affect the business sales

Solution 3

Customers would be highly attracted to the app for suggestions

The Grocery store runs the risk of losing customers to that store

Conclusion:

Based on the Far-flung customers, that experienced distance constraints and the risk of their wine being sold out. I believe in designing a mobile app that allows customers to view, reserve, or choose home delivery. When the wine is reserved they could visit the store the next time to purchase their other grocery supplies they could uplift it.
