It could happen, but you don\u2019t want to get your hopes up.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Listen along via Youtube if you prefer:<br><\/p>\n\n\n\n<iframe class=\"youtube-vid\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/YTi-U_6d7WM?si=sRInWQLL0S1f31cs\" title=\"YouTube video player\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">According to the Lehigh University <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hirelehigh.com\/post\/how-many-applications-does-it-take-to-get-a-job\" rel=\"nofollow\">Center for Career &amp; Professional Development<\/a>, \u201cit takes 100-200+ applications to receive one job offer.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">That number takes into consideration all job openings across all industries, so you may have a different experience. But again, you need to prepare yourself for anything that could come your way.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">With all this in mind, you\u2019re likely to find yourself facing a very important question: <em>why was your product manager application rejected?<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Before you can answer this question, there are two stages where rejection is possible:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Pre-interview: Rejection at this stage means one of two things. You never hear back from the hiring company or they contact you to say that you were not selected for the next step.&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Post-interview: You made it to the \u201cinterview round,\u201d but the hiring company decided to go in a different direction.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">How you hear about your rejection often depends on how you found the job opening. For example:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Apply online: If you find a PM job opening online and apply for it, you\u2019re most likely to hear nothing or receive an email stating that your application was rejected.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Get approached by a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.productmanagementexercises.com\/blog\/google-product-manager-recruiter-interview\/\">recruiter<\/a>: In this case, the hiring company will keep in touch with your recruiter. If you don\u2019t make it through to the next round, your recruiter will inform you.&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Introduction through a connection: If you\u2019re not a \u201cgood fit,\u201d you\u2019ll either hear from the hiring company directly or your connection (depending on their job title and status at the company).&nbsp;<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Note: Many job applications \u2014 especially in the tech space \u2014 never hear back from the hiring company. Applying With a Resume Online<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Applying for a PM job online with a resume is the least common of the three approaches. Applying Through a Recruiter<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">When applying through a recruiter, you don\u2019t have to worry about \u201cjob fit&#8221;.\u201d The recruiter reached out to you for a reason. They believe you have what it takes to get hired and perform at a high level.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">However, there\u2019s no guarantee you\u2019ll receive an offer. It\u2019s a competitive space, and you can guarantee that the recruiter is in touch with other qualified candidates.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">If you\u2019re rejected through a recruiter, consult with them to learn what went wrong. Ask questions such as:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>What reason were you given for the rejection?<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Is there anything I could have done better?<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>What did the company note as my strong points? My weak points?<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The key here is to make a solid connection with your recruiter. They\u2019re not the hiring manager, but the information they can provide is invaluable as you prepare for your next interview.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 id=\"3-applying-through-a-connection\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">3. Applying Through a Connection<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In many ways, this is the same as applying through a recruiter. The primary difference is that you were introduced to the company by someone who already works there \u2014 perhaps even in the department you\u2019re seeking employment.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Note: You may also be introduced to a hiring company by someone who doesn\u2019t work there. For instance, a client of the company who you have worked with in the past.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Set yourself up for success by:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Asking your connection for as much information on the position and company as they can share. Think about details such as why they\u2019re hiring, desired skills and experience, and timeline.&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Ensuring that your connection introduced you to the right person, such as the hiring manager.&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Asking for feedback after the interview: Your connection may be able to consult with the hiring manager as to their overall impression and what comes next.&nbsp;<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">If the process ends in rejection, once again double back with your connection to discuss the finer details.
