Clarifying question: Is interviewer interested in organizational goal behind or looking for KPIs/metrics that measure the goal effectively. Assuming both.

Organizational goal: To drive user engagement. Facebook benefits from a network effect of having more users on its network. More engagement helps Facebook learn more about individual users and potentially their friends/network and in turn target them more effectively with advertisements driving up the secondary goal of monetization.

Key Metrics:

Engagement:

  1. DAU and MAU on news feed page.
  2. Average time spent on news feed.
  3. Average eyeball time on a news feed item.
  4. Average Likes/Comments on a news-item.
  5. Number of blocked items on news-feed.(Shows quality of curation of news feed and could have a negative effect on user engagement/retention if too high)
  6. Customer survey results on satisfaction with news feed.
Monetization:
  1. CTR of ads shown on news feed. (higher CTR clearly indicates effectiveness of curation of ads displayed on news-feed)
  2. ARPU for ads displayed on news-feed.

I think the question is about defining the goals, and the way to define goals is that it should be measurable and actionable. The goals should always be quantitative.

When we are measuring metrics, we can always come back to our goals and see how we defined success through our goals and whether we achieved it.

Clarifying question: Are you looking for goals in terms of metrics for measuring product success or the organization goals for the product? (Assuming both)

Understanding of Facebook news feed: It is a primary Facebook app which allows users to create posts, share updates and like/comment /react to posts of friends in the network

Goals of the product wrt the organization:

The product has a growing userbase and since the volume of users is already high, the goals are to a) retain current users b) add new users c) Convert passive to active users d) Expand usage to other products which will inturn bring in a)more revenue through ads

Metrics :

a) Userbase: DAU/MAU growth

b)# of Distinct Users of the platform per month, # of Repeat users of the platform

c) Engagement: # of Likes/Reactions per User per day/month, # of comments,

d) # of daily passive users as a % of daily active users - where passive is defined as (login and spending a certain amount of time without any posting or liking activity)

c)Number of active and passive users using other products

Yes, so my intent was to speak through the goals qualitatively and then represent the goals with metrics . Do you mean to say goals like improve mau by 5% etc, # of likes by 2% and so on?
